There is no single price to fuel a commercial airliner: the cost depends on how much fuel it takes on, the aircraft, the airport and date, and the airline’s purchasing terms. IATA’s latest weekly global refinery benchmark available on October 8, 2026 was $187.34 per barrel—about $4.46 per US gallon. At that benchmark, filling the published usable capacity of a Boeing 737-8 would have a theoretical fuel value of about $30,400; for a Boeing 787-8, about $148,700. Those are capacity-based illustrations, not typical costs for a flight or airline invoices.
What does the current jet-fuel benchmark mean?
IATA’s Jet Fuel Price Monitor displayed a global average refinery benchmark of $187.34 per barrel in its latest weekly reading available when accessed on October 8, 2026. That is approximately $4.46 per US gallon, using 42 gallons per barrel. IATA says its monitor uses regional daily spot-price assessments from S&P Global Energy Platts weighted into a global composite; it provides a market benchmark, not an airport-delivered quote or the price every airline pays. IATA Jet Fuel Price Monitor.
Jet-fuel prices move over time. For context, IATA’s Q2 2026 Quarterly Air Transport Chartbook reported averages of $124.7 per barrel in Q1 2026 and $158.0 per barrel in Q2 2026, with an April 2026 peak of $188.4 per barrel. How much would a full tank be worth?
The estimates below multiply manufacturer-published fuel capacity by the approximate $4.46-per-gallon refinery benchmark. They show the theoretical value of filling the stated capacity, not the amount an airline normally buys before a flight.

These calculations use a refinery-level benchmark as a simple comparison. They do not account for local delivery costs, taxes, airport charges, or an airline’s contract price. The capacity figures also differ in whether they describe usable or maximum fuel, as noted in the table.
Why a flight’s fuel bill is not the full-tank value
An aircraft may already have fuel aboard, and the amount taken on at a stop is planned for the specific flight rather than automatically filling every tank. A fuel purchase depends on the quantity uplifted and the applicable unit price. The required quantity reflects route and operating plans, including reserves, payload, weather, and other conditions. Tank capacity alone therefore cannot establish the cost of a particular departure.

Aircraft size matters, but so do the market and procurement details. A global refinery benchmark cannot reveal the airport-delivered price or the effective price under an airline’s contracts and hedging. Local fees and taxes can also affect the bill. The public benchmark and capacity specifications do not establish fuel burn or actual expenditure for a specific route, date, or carrier.

IATA describes fuel as typically one of the largest, if not the largest, components of an airline’s operating cost. In its June 2026 industry outlook, IATA forecast an annual 2026 average jet-fuel price of $152 per barrel, global airline fuel spending of $350 billion, and fuel at 31.4% of operating costs. Those are industry forecasts, not final actual results or figures that apply to every airline. IATA Global Outlook for Air Transport, June 2026.
