Capology estimates his gross fixed pay at £12,500 a week, or £650,000 a year; that is a third-party estimate, not a figure confirmed by the club. The separately reported £7 million was the transfer fee, not Downs’ wages.
What is known about Downs’ Southampton salary?
When Southampton announced on 9 July 2025 that it had signed Downs from FC Köln on a four-year deal, it did not publish his salary or contract terms. Southampton’s announcement confirms the signing, but gives no individual pay figure.

Capology’s 2026–27 Southampton salary page, accessed on 8 October 2026, estimates Downs’ gross fixed salary at £12,500 per week, equivalent to £650,000 per year. Treat both amounts as estimates: they are not an official club disclosure or an audited statement of his individual contract. Capology also notes that its player estimates do not track or include personnel costs reported in official financial statements and UEFA publications.
What the estimate does—and does not—tell you
“Gross fixed salary” is not the same as take-home pay. The available sources do not establish Downs’ net income after tax, his bonuses, or other compensation. They also do not provide enough detail to calculate a reliable total for what he personally earns.

Why the £7 million figure is not his salary
BBC Sport reported that Southampton’s deal to sign Downs was worth £7 million. That is a reported transfer fee—the cost associated with the transfer—not money paid to Downs as wages. It should not be compared with his estimated weekly or annual salary as though the figures describe the same thing. BBC Sport’s report was published on 9 July 2025.
What is known about his current loan?
Southampton says Downs joined St. Louis City on loan through the end of the 2027 MLS season. Its loan announcement does not disclose the financial terms or say whether Southampton, St. Louis City, or both cover his wages. The Capology estimate therefore should not be read as confirmation of what either club pays during the loan.

Is the “top level contract” claim confirmed?
The available club and reporting sources do not identify who used the phrase “top level contract” or confirm it as a description of Downs’ Southampton wages. Without an identifiable original source, it should be treated as wording in the claim, not as a verified quotation or established contract detail.
