There is no single price for a tuna fish. Species, size, quality, location, timing and the point of sale all matter. For a recent U.S. benchmark, NOAA reports that commercial Pacific bluefin landings in 2024 totaled 300,000 pounds and were valued at $1.7 million—about $5.67 per pound when the rounded totals are divided. That is an indicative landing-value average, not a price for every fish or a retail price. At the other extreme, a 243-kilogram bluefin sold for ¥510.3 million at Tokyo’s special first auction of 2026; that headline bid is not an ordinary market price.
What determines how much a tuna sells for?
A tuna’s sale price depends on more than its species. Size, quality, where it is sold, the date and the transaction stage all affect the amount. A fishing vessel’s landing value, a wholesale price, an auction bid for a whole fish and the price a consumer pays are different figures and should not be treated as interchangeable.
- Species: Pacific bluefin and Atlantic bluefin are distinct from one another and from other tuna species.
- Market and location: U.S. landing data, Japanese port prices and a named auction describe different markets.
- Weight basis: A price per pound of dressed weight is not directly comparable with a price per kilogram or a whole-fish bid.
- Quality and timing: Quality, supply, demand and special events can move prices.
NOAA discusses demand, quantity, quality, marketing and New Year traditions as factors that can influence bluefin prices, while noting that million-dollar price tags are far from the norm: NOAA’s explanation of bluefin prices.
Recent U.S. Pacific bluefin benchmark
NOAA Fisheries reports 300,000 pounds in U.S. commercial Pacific bluefin landings in 2024, valued at $1.7 million. Dividing the reported value by the reported pounds gives approximately $5.67 per pound. Because both source totals are rounded, this is only an indicative average calculated from aggregate landing data—not a separately quoted price, a price for an individual tuna or a consumer price. NOAA’s Pacific bluefin species page provides the underlying commercial landings context.

What the record Tokyo auction price means
On January 5, 2026, a 243-kilogram bluefin caught in Ōma, Aomori, sold for ¥510,300,000 at Toyosu Market’s special first auction of the year. Guinness World Records lists it as a record sale: Guinness World Records’ auction record.
The first auction of the year is an exceptional event, and its bid should not be used as the everyday value of a bluefin tuna. Guinness reports that sushi served after the record-setting auction was sold at regular prices. The record demonstrates how high a special auction bid can go, not what fishermen typically receive or what consumers generally pay.

Other bluefin figures—and why dates matter
NOAA’s historical Atlantic bluefin figures are not directly comparable with the 2024 U.S. Pacific bluefin landing benchmark. For 2017, NOAA reported $9.6 million in U.S. commercial revenue and estimated a price of $6.45 per pound. For 2018, it reported a median value just over $2,000 per Atlantic bluefin tuna. These are dated Atlantic figures, not current prices or Pacific bluefin estimates. NOAA’s article on why bluefin can be expensive explains the context for those historical statistics.
A separate NOAA report charts average bluefin ex-vessel prices per pound of dressed weight: $6.62 in 2021, $6.67 in 2022, $7.63 in 2023, $7.89 in 2024 and $7.78 in 2025. These are report-specific averages on a dressed-weight basis; they are not whole-fish retail prices. NOAA’s Bluefin Tuna Landings and Price Report supplies the chart and its basis.

Japanese port prices use a different measure
The Organization for the Promotion of Responsible Tuna Fisheries (OPRT) publishes a series titled “Landing price of tunas (Main fishing ports in Japan),” measured in yen per kilogram. Its note says the series includes Southern bluefin tuna and identifies Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries as its source. It is therefore not a direct comparison with a U.S. bluefin figure expressed per pound or with the Toyosu whole-fish auction bid. OPRT’s Japanese tuna landing-price series describes the unit and scope.

Commercial availability depends on fisheries rules as well as market prices. NOAA organizes Atlantic bluefin fishery status and landings by quota category and cautions that landings to date are preliminary and quotas may change during the year. The figures are not a standing guarantee that a particular person may catch, keep or sell a fish. Check the current status and rules for the relevant fishery before acting: NOAA’s Atlantic bluefin landings and status page.
