AMD and ASRock’s BC-250 Mining Board Uses PS5-Related Silicon—But the $15K Rig Claim Is Unverified

The BC-250 is a custom mining compute board described as using a cut-down, PS5-related APU. Its connection to PS5 silicon is documented, but recycled-console provenance and the $15,000 rig figure are not verified.

The AMD/ASRock BC-250 is a mining compute board built around a cut-down APU related to the PlayStation 5’s silicon, according to community documentation. But the available sources do not verify that its chips were recycled from previously manufactured PS5 consoles—or substantiate the title’s $15,000 rig valuation. The board’s hardware identity is better established than the story behind that figure.

What the AMD/ASRock BC-250 is

The BC-250 is a custom-form-factor compute board associated with cryptocurrency mining, not a retail graphics card or a complete PlayStation 5. Community documentation describes it as using a cut-down version of an APU related to the PS5 platform. That supports a relationship between the two designs; it does not establish where any individual BC-250 chip was manufactured or whether it was recovered from a used console.

The board is described as having six Zen 2 CPU cores and 24 RDNA 2 compute units. For comparison, the same community documentation lists 36 compute units for the standard PS5 APU. These are community-documented specifications, not an official AMD product sheet.

What is known—and not known—about the $15,000 figure

The cited sources do not independently corroborate a $15,000 total valuation for a mining rig. They also do not establish its configuration, the number of BC-250 boards it contained, or how the figure was calculated. Without those details, the amount should not be treated as a verified build cost, sale price, or current market value.

Tom’s Hardware reported that BC-250 units appeared on eBay for about $500 in 2021 and that similar units were offered in China for about £96, or $120, in 2025. Those are examples tied to specific marketplaces and dates—not proof of the rig’s total value or a quote for today’s market.

Reported price example Marketplace and timing What it establishes
About $500 eBay listings in 2021, as described by Tom’s Hardware in its November 9, 2025 report A historical asking-price example, not a confirmed sale price
About £96 / $120 Similar units offered in China in 2025, as reported by Tom’s Hardware on November 9, 2025 A dated marketplace example, not a current quote or a valuation of a complete rig
$15,000 total Not established by the cited sources No verified configuration, board count, or calculation is available

How the board differs from a PS5 or a graphics card

The BC-250 is a complete compute board with its own custom form factor and a set of listed connections, including DisplayPort, Gigabit Ethernet, USB, M.2 storage, and an 8-pin PCIe power connector. It is not a standard add-in GPU that can simply be installed in a typical desktop and treated like a retail graphics card. Nor should its PS5-related silicon be taken to mean it offers the same hardware configuration or experience as a retail PS5.

  • NOTE: Refer the User Manual before use.

Community specifications list 16GB of shared GDDR6 memory and a 220W TDP. The documentation notes that software configuration affects memory allocation. TDP is a specification, not a guarantee of the board’s exact power draw in every workload.

What to check before buying one for a PC project

Community documentation describes the board as usable in desktop-style projects, but that is not the same as plug-and-play support. Buyers should account for the board’s power, cooling, storage, and software requirements, and assess the condition and completeness of the specific used unit.

ASRock B550M-HDV Socket AM4 Micro-ATX Motherboard, Supports AMD Ryzen 5000/4000/3000 Series Processors, DDR4 4733+(OC), PCIe 4.0, Gigabit LAN
  • Comprehensive AMD AM4 Platform: Supports a wide range of AMD Socket AM4 processors, including Ryzen 5000, 4000, and 3000 Series CPUs and APUs for flexible, budget-friendly builds. Please check ASRock's CPU support list for detailed compatibility.
  • Legacy Display Support: Offers maximum monitor compatibility with three video outputs: HDMI (4K 60Hz), DVI-D, and D-Sub (VGA), perfect for office or home systems.
  • High-Speed Memory Support: Two DDR4 DIMM slots support dual-channel configurations and overclocked speeds up to 4733+ (OC) for responsive performance.
  • PCIe 4.0 Ready: The primary PCIe x16 slot supports PCIe 4.0 speeds (with compatible 3rd Gen Ryzen CPUs and above) for modern graphics cards.
  • Versatile Storage Options: Features one Hyper M.2 slot (PCIe Gen4x4 and SATA3) for a fast NVMe or SATA SSD, plus four SATA3 ports for additional drives.
  • Power: Check that the power supply has the required PCIe 8-pin connector and is appropriate for the board and the rest of the build.
  • Cooling: Plan for adequate cooling, including the GDDR6 memory; the community hardware documentation specifically flags memory cooling.
  • Storage and connections: Verify that the unit has the expected M.2 storage provision and that its listed I/O—DisplayPort, Ethernet, and USB—fits the intended setup.
  • Software support: Confirm current kernel and driver guidance before buying. Community-maintained software notes can change, and support may require troubleshooting rather than a standard desktop installation.
  • Used-unit condition: Ask what is included, whether the board has been tested, and what cooling or other setup parts are missing. A listing price for a bare or untested board does not establish the cost of a functioning build.

What the sources establish about the PS5 connection

H6-Technologies’ community documentation describes the BC-250 as an ASRock mining board using a cut-down variant of the PS5 APU. A separate community-maintained specification page lists its CPU and graphics figures. These sources support describing the BC-250 as PS5-related; they do not establish a chain of custody showing that the APUs were taken from, or recycled out of, previously manufactured PS5 consoles.

Tom’s Hardware’s November 9, 2025 report provides dated used-market examples and discusses the board’s renewed visibility. The opened ASRock Rack AMD platform catalog does not confirm the BC-250 or substantiate the $15,000 claim, so it is not evidence for either point.
