There is no single nationwide price for a fishing license at Walmart. States set license fees, and your total depends on where you will fish, whether you qualify as a resident, the license type and duration, and any required permits or add-ons. The state examples below show how prices differ; they are official agency fees, not confirmed Walmart prices.
How much does a fishing license cost?
Start with the state where you plan to fish: its agency sets the license requirements and fees. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service says that “Every state has slightly different rules, so look up your state for state-specific requirements.” U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service guidance notes that in most states, licenses can be purchased online, by phone, or at retail establishments. That does not establish that every Walmart sells them.
These 2026 state examples illustrate how fees vary. They are not a national price range or Walmart quotes.

Before comparing prices, identify the details that define the license you need:

- State and water type: A freshwater license may not cover saltwater fishing. The Florida prices above are specifically for freshwater.
- Residency: States may charge different rates for residents and nonresidents.
- Duration and validity dates: Options may include daily, multiday, or annual licenses. Check when a short-term license starts and how long it remains valid.
- License category and add-ons: Certain species or locations may require a validation, stamp, tag, or report card. California lists additional validations and report cards for some fishing.
- Eligibility: Age, disability, veteran status, or other qualifications can affect whether a person needs a license or qualifies for a reduced-fee or free option. California describes exemptions and reduced-fee or free licenses for qualifying groups.
- Purchase channel: An agency may charge different transaction fees depending on whether you buy online, through an app, by mail, or at a retailer.
Can you buy a fishing license at Walmart?
Possibly, but availability depends on the state and the particular store. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service says retail establishments sell licenses in most states; Indiana’s Department of Natural Resources says licenses are sold through license retailers and at most DNR properties. Neither source confirms that a specific Walmart is an authorized agent, has the service available that day, or charges a particular fee.
Use the state agency’s official license-agent locator, then call the local Walmart and ask whether it issues the exact license you need. Confirm the store’s hours for license sales and ask whether any transaction charge applies.

How to find your exact price
- Open the official agency website for the state where you will fish. Use its license or fee page rather than relying on another state’s prices.
- Choose the right category. Check residency, freshwater or saltwater coverage, duration, age or eligibility rules, and any species- or area-specific requirements.
- Check the total for your intended purchase channel. Look for any stated transaction fee or required add-on in addition to the base license fee.
- Verify Walmart availability locally. Check the agency’s retailer locator and contact the specific store before making a trip.
Why an online price may not match a store purchase
Fees tied to a purchase channel are state-specific and should not be assumed to apply at Walmart elsewhere. For example, Indiana’s DNR describes a $3 technology fee per license plus a credit-card processing fee for online or app purchases. Its fee schedule describes a $1 technology fee for purchases by regular mail, at a DNR property, or at a retailer. Those Indiana details do not establish a Walmart fee in Indiana or in another state.
