Re:

How Much Does a Boeing 737 MAX Cost Compared With an Airbus A320neo?

Airbus’s 2018 A320neo list price and Ryanair’s MAX-10 basic price are useful reference points, but they are not a current like-for-like comparison.

There is no publicly established, current apples-to-apples price comparison for the Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus A320neo. The closest published figures are an approximately US$135 million basic price for a 737 MAX-10 in a Ryanair contract and Airbus’s US$110.6 million 2018 list price for an A320neo. They refer to different years, aircraft variants and price bases—not what an airline would necessarily pay today.

What are the published prices?

Aircraft Published figure What it represents
Airbus A320neo US$110.6 million Airbus’s 2018 list price for the A320neo, reported in its 2018 announcement. It is a historical list-price reference, not a current quote.
Boeing 737 MAX-10 Approximately US$135 million The basic price for each MAX-10 under Ryanair’s 2023 contract, as described in Ryanair’s 2025 base prospectus. Ryanair says its effective price after concessions is significantly lower; the contracted aircraft are scheduled for delivery from 2027. See the Ryanair 2025 base prospectus.

The figures should not be subtracted or converted into a percentage difference as if they described equivalent purchases. One is an Airbus A320neo list price published in 2018; the other is a Boeing MAX-10 basic price tied to one airline’s 2023 contract and described in 2025. The latter is not a universal price for every 737 MAX model.

Why these figures do not reveal what an airline pays

List and basic prices are not negotiated prices

Airbus’s figure is a list price. Ryanair’s prospectus distinguishes the MAX-10 basic price from its effective price after concessions, which it says is significantly lower. The published basic figure therefore cannot be treated as the amount Ryanair will pay, much less as the price another airline would receive.

The aircraft and deal details differ

The Boeing figure is specifically for the MAX-10, while the Airbus figure is for the A320neo. A contract also has its own configuration, equipment, delivery timing, options and other terms. The cited sources do not quantify how those factors change the prices in these examples, so they do not support a like-for-like adjustment.

Do recent orders provide a better price comparison?

No. Public order announcements can establish demand and aircraft quantities without disclosing the transaction price. In July 2026, SMBC Aviation Capital announced firm orders for 35 A320neo, 65 A321neo, 40 737 MAX 8 and 60 737 MAX 10 aircraft. The announcement disclosed no deal price. Its announcement is evidence of a large order across both families, not a basis for calculating what the lessor paid per aircraft.

Airbus’s June 2026 A320neo-family customer list records 12,063 firm orders from 153 customers, but it is an order list, not a price catalogue. Boeing’s January 2026 Alaska Airlines release reports an order for 105 737-10s and options for 35 more without stating the order value. Neither announcement supplies a comparable price.

What to take from the comparison

  • The best disclosed A320neo reference here is Airbus’s historical US$110.6 million 2018 list price.
  • The best disclosed MAX reference is approximately US$135 million as the MAX-10 basic price in Ryanair’s 2023 contract, with a significantly lower effective price after concessions according to Ryanair’s 2025 prospectus.
  • Neither figure establishes a current airline purchase price, and together they do not show that one aircraft is definitively more expensive than the other.

Timing also matters for the MAX-10: Boeing’s second-quarter 2026 results said the 737-7 and 737-10 had completed certification flight testing as of July, with certification expected in 2026 and first deliveries expected in 2027. Those are Boeing’s expectations, not a guarantee, and they do not disclose a price. See Boeing’s second-quarter 2026 results.
