There is no single fuel cost for a U.S. airline flight: the estimate is the gallons that flight burns multiplied by the airline’s applicable fuel price. Federal data report industry totals and average prices, but they do not establish a representative per-flight bill without a defined aircraft, route, and fuel-burn figure.
How to estimate the fuel cost of one flight
Use this calculation:
Estimated fuel cost = gallons burned on the flight × applicable price paid per gallon.
The price per gallon alone is not a per-flight cost. You need fuel burned for the particular flight, then a price that matches the airline and time period. The figures below provide context for prices and spending, not a universal estimate for a typical departure.
What recent U.S. airline fuel figures show
The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported that U.S. scheduled-service airlines spent $6,659,449,763 on 1,626,843,292 gallons of fuel in May 2026, an average of $4.09 per gallon. This is a systemwide monthly total, not the fuel cost of one flight. BTS’s May 2026 monthly report presents the scheduled-service figures.

For December 2025, BTS reported an average of $2.32 per gallon, $3.74 billion in fuel expense, and 1.614 billion gallons for scheduled service. BTS published those figures on February 5, 2026. The difference between December and May illustrates why a reported price must be tied to its period; it should not be treated as a standing current price. BTS’s December 2025 release says fuel consumption data refer to fuel paid for by the carrier.
What one airline’s annual disclosure adds
American Airlines Group reported 4,488 million gallons of fuel, $10,718 million in fuel expense, and an average price of $2.39 per gallon including related taxes for 2025. Fuel represented 20% of the company’s operating expenses. Those are annual company figures, not a cost assigned to an individual flight, and the price basis differs from BTS’s monthly systemwide figure. See American Airlines Group’s 2025 annual report.

American also estimated that each one-cent-per-gallon increase would add approximately $50 million in annual fuel expense, based on its forecasted 2026 mainline and regional fuel consumption. This is a company-specific sensitivity estimate, not an industrywide rule. The annual report provides that forecast context.
Why fuel comparisons need careful definitions
- Period and scope: Identify whether a figure is monthly or annual, and whether it covers U.S. scheduled service, another service category, or a named airline. BTS reports scheduled and nonscheduled service separately.
- Metric: Keep the average price per gallon, gallons, and total fuel expense distinct. A total expense covers a reporting period, not one departure.
- Taxes and accounting basis: American’s 2025 average price includes related taxes; its basis should not be treated as identical to every BTS figure.
- Carrier-paid fuel versus fuel burned: BTS explains that its consumption figures concern fuel paid for by the carrier. Its carrier-level table warns that adjustments involving fuel paid for by another party can skew reported gallons; quarterly P5.1/P5.2 account Z9210 may be more accurate for gallons consumed. - Revisions and inflation: BTS may revise figures when corrected inputs are received. Its published fuel costs are not inflation-adjusted, and month-to-month comparisons are not seasonally adjusted. See BTS’s December 2025 release.
What you need for a route-specific estimate
To estimate a particular flight’s fuel cost, first identify the gallons burned for that flight, then select a price that matches the airline and relevant period. The cited federal and company disclosures provide price and aggregate-consumption context, but do not establish a universal U.S. flight average or a representative cost range for a particular aircraft and route. Without a defined fuel-burn figure, a per-flight dollar estimate would be unsupported.
