How Much Do Private Jet Pilots Make in the U.S.? 2026 Salary Guide

The latest public benchmark is $133,150 for commercial pilots in nonscheduled air transportation in May 2025, a category that includes charter, air taxi, and fractional operators—not every private-jet pilot.

There is no public, nationwide 2026 salary figure specifically for U.S. private jet pilots. The latest available government wage data is for May 2025: commercial pilots in nonscheduled air transportation—which includes charter, air taxi, and fractional operators—had a median annual wage of $133,150. That is a useful benchmark, not a private-jet-only salary. Corporate flight-department jobs are not captured by one clean national category either.

What is the salary benchmark for private jet pilots?

The best public figures are broader occupational and industry categories, not a single measure of private jet pilot pay. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports May 2025 wages; the 2026 NBAA survey provides current business-aviation context but its public summary does not disclose a private-pilot salary figure.

Measure May 2025 median or survey result What it represents
Commercial pilots in nonscheduled air transportation $133,150 annual median Includes charter, air taxi, and fractional operators; it is not limited to private jets or all business flight departments. BLS industry estimates reproduced and attributed by YouFly.
Commercial pilots in management of companies and enterprises $173,460 annual median A broad proxy for some in-house corporate flight departments, not a private-jet-only statistic. BLS industry estimates reproduced and attributed by YouFly.
Commercial pilots across industries $123,220 annual median All-industry commercial-pilot benchmark; it includes jobs beyond private aviation. BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook.
Airline pilots, copilots, and flight engineers $232,140 annual median A separate occupational group, not a like-for-like private-pilot comparison. BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook.

The broad 10th-to-90th percentile range for commercial pilots in nonscheduled air transportation was $62,060–$299,300 in May 2025. It spans different aircraft and operations, so it should not be read as the typical range for a particular private-jet job. The underlying BLS industry estimates do not isolate private-jet pilots.

What the 2026 NBAA survey does—and does not—say

The National Business Aviation Association reported that salaries rose by nearly 7% in some categories in its 2026 compensation survey. The public announcement does not identify that increase as a private-jet-pilot raise, nor does it publish a private-pilot salary estimate. The survey drew 352 NBAA member participants and covered 4,090 flight-department employees; detailed data is available to eligible members. NBAA’s 2026 survey announcement.

BLS and NBAA figures answer different questions. BLS reports wages by occupation and industry for May 2025. NBAA surveys business-aviation flight departments and tracks compensation dimensions such as annual cash pay, incentives, duty and flight hours, and overnight days. The public NBAA summary does not provide the role-level pay table needed to calculate a precise 2026 salary for a captain or first officer.

Why private-pilot pay varies

Operator and industry

Charter, air taxi, and fractional pilots fall within the nonscheduled-air-transportation benchmark. A company-employed pilot may instead work in an in-house flight department. The BLS corporate-industry median of $173,460 can help frame the latter, but the category includes more than private aviation and is not directly interchangeable with the nonscheduled figure.

Aircraft and mission

In the 2025 NBAA survey, pilots flying ultra-long-range jets averaged 136% of the overall pilot average. This is a relative survey result, not a promised premium or a dollar salary. It indicates why aircraft type and mission matter when comparing compensation. NBAA 2025 Compensation Survey Executive Summary.

Seat and responsibility

A captain or pilot in command (PIC) and a first officer or copilot have different responsibilities. Compare the same seat, aircraft, and operation when weighing salaries. The public 2026 summary does not provide a role-by-role pay table, so it cannot establish a current captain-versus-first-officer salary gap.

Pilots with at least 10 years at a company averaged 122%, while pilots at companies with sales above $10 billion averaged 119%. These are survey comparisons against the overall pilot average, not guarantees for individuals. NBAA 2025 survey summary.

How to compare private-jet pilot offers

A quoted salary can omit pay components or obscure the schedule attached to the job. Before comparing offers, clarify:

  • Role and aircraft: Captain/PIC or first officer/copilot, aircraft category, and typical mission.
  • Operator: Corporate flight department, charter, air taxi, or fractional operator.
  • Pay structure: Base salary, overtime, annual cash incentives, long-term incentives, and benefits.
  • Work expectations: Formally recorded duty and flight hours, weekend work, and overnight days.
  • Comparison basis: Reference year, region, experience, and whether the figure is a median, average, or employer offer.

NBAA says its survey tracks annual cash compensation, merit increases, long-term incentives, formally recorded duty and flight hours, and weekend and remain-overnight days. Its public summary does not expose all detailed compensation figures, so those dimensions are useful questions to ask an employer rather than numbers to assume in a salary estimate. What to know before pursuing the career

The BLS says commercial pilots complete flight training and meet FAA certificate and rating requirements; aircraft-specific ratings are generally acquired through employer-based training. These requirements help explain why qualifications and aircraft experience may affect hiring and pay, but the available wage categories do not translate a particular credential into a specific salary.
