How Much Do Food and Agriculture PACs Give to Republicans? The 2024 Breakdown

A 2024 analysis found that 262 food- and agriculture-related PACs directed 66% of $26.7 million in reported congressional-campaign contributions to Republicans. The figure is a historical snapshot, not a current-cycle estimate.

In the 2024 campaign, 66% of $26.7 million in reported congressional-campaign contributions from 262 food- and agriculture-related PACs went to Republicans, according to Center for Responsive Politics data compiled and analyzed by Agri-Pulse and summarized by Farm Policy News. That is a dated snapshot of a defined group of PACs—not a current-cycle figure or a measure of all political spending tied to food and agriculture.

What the 2024 figures show

Farm Policy News reported on October 24, 2024, that the analysis covered 262 food- and agriculture-related PACs and $26.7 million in contributions to congressional campaigns for the 2024 campaign. The reported Republican share was 66%. These figures should be read as the analysis’s reported results, not as a new calculation.

  • Total covered: $26.7 million in reported contributions from 262 food- and agriculture-related PACs.
  • Republican share: 66% of that total.
  • Notable included committee: Nearly $1.8 million from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association PAC was included.

The source also highlighted recipients: House Agriculture Committee Chairman Glenn “GT” Thompson received $158,106, and Senate candidate Amy Klobuchar received about $101,000, according to the article’s summary of Agri-Pulse reporting. They are examples, not a complete list of recipients. Farm Policy News’ October 24, 2024 report summarizes the analysis.

What “food and agriculture PACs” means here

The reported percentage applies to the 262 PACs included in that analysis and to their reported congressional-campaign contributions. It does not show that every agricultural or food company, trade association, cooperative, employee, or individual donor favored Republicans. Nor does it capture every kind of political spending connected to the sector.

The inclusion of nearly $1.8 million from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association PAC is a reminder that the covered universe includes rural electric cooperative political activity. The headline’s shorthand should not be mistaken for a claim about all agriculture-related money or all organizations in the industry.

Contributions are not the same as outside spending

Direct contributions to candidates and independent expenditures are different measures. The Federal Election Commission (FEC) publishes separate PAC tables for financial activity and contributions, as well as category-specific tables such as trade PACs and cooperative PACs. Each table has its own stated coverage period, so figures cannot be compared responsibly without matching the period and transaction definition. See the FEC’s PAC data summary tables.

The FEC also distinguishes independent expenditures from candidate contributions. Independent-expenditure-only committees are prohibited from contributing to candidates. A contribution total therefore should not be presented as if it included, or measured, all outside spending in support of candidates. The FEC’s 2025–2026 campaign activity summary reports $8.3 billion in PAC receipts and $6.5 billion in PAC disbursements for January 1, 2025 through June 30, 2026. Those are all-PAC aggregate figures, not food- and agriculture-PAC totals and not a substitute for candidate-contribution data.

Is there a newer food-and-agriculture PAC percentage?

The cited FEC materials do not establish a newer food- and agriculture-specific partisan share comparable to the 66% reported for the 2024 campaign. That percentage should not be projected forward or described as a 2026 result. A valid updated comparison would need the same committee universe, a clearly specified date range, and a consistent definition of what counts as a contribution.

In particular, an update would need to establish whether it counts only direct contributions to candidates or also contributions to other committees or outside spending. Without a matching calculation, current-cycle figures cannot be set beside the 2024 share as though they measured the same thing.

What the figures do—and do not—say

The finding describes the partisan distribution of reported contributions within one defined PAC group and campaign period. By itself, it does not explain why committees made those contributions, demonstrate that contributions changed a policy outcome, or establish how voters, employees, companies, or the wider industry align politically.
