In a July 2026 report about her comments on streaming income, Tyler was quoted as saying, “Oh, it’s nothing — just about nothing.” That remark concerned streaming, not every source of income from the song.
What Bonnie Tyler has said about the song’s streaming earnings
Music Times reported on July 9, 2026, that Tyler made the “just about nothing” remark in a BBC interview when asked about what she receives from streaming. The quote is a reported comment about streaming earnings; it is not a disclosed lifetime total for the song, nor does it establish what she received from sales, licensing, performances, or other arrangements. Music Times’ report and Tyler’s official summary of her Lorraine Kelly interview discuss the streaming-economics conversation.

What the song’s success figures do—and don’t—show
The published milestones measure different things. They document the song’s commercial reach, but none is an accounting of Tyler’s personal income.
| Milestone | What is reported | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Copies sold | Tyler’s official site reported over nine million copies sold globally in 2022. Official announcement | How much of the sales revenue went to Tyler |
| Spotify audio streams | Tyler’s official site reported in February 2026 that Spotify confirmed the song reached one billion streams in August 2025. Official milestone announcement | Her personal share of streaming revenue |
| YouTube video views | The Guardian reported in 2023 that the video had reached one billion views. The Guardian retrospective | Revenue attributable to those views or Tyler’s share |
Sales, Spotify plays, and YouTube views are separate measures, not interchangeable units. Adding them together would not produce a meaningful earnings estimate. A stream or a view also does not, by itself, reveal how much a particular performer received: the cited sources do not provide contract terms, royalty statements, or a breakdown of who was paid.

Why the song became such a major hit
Jim Steinman wrote and produced “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” which Tyler recorded for her album Faster Than the Speed of Night. Tyler’s official biography identifies the track as her US Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 and describes her work with Steinman as yielding a global hit. Tyler’s official biography
In a 2023 first-person retrospective for The Guardian, Tyler said Steinman had started the song for a prospective musical version of Nosferatu. She recalled that a roughly seven-minute version was shortened to about four minutes. After recording it in New York, she wrote in a letter: “I recorded an incredible song today. The trouble is, it’s so long, I don’t think anybody will ever play it.”

Tyler also described seeking a move from country rock toward rock, approaching Sony executive Muff Winwood about working with Steinman, and hearing Rory Dodd sing the song at Steinman’s apartment. Dodd recalled that Steinman wrote it as a duet for himself and Tyler, using the contrast between Tyler’s gruff voice and Dodd’s tenor. These details help explain the song’s creation and sound, but they do not answer how its revenue was divided.
