The clearest public figure is a $30 million aggregate-value restricted stock unit (RSU) award disclosed in TKO’s 2024 filing under Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s broader WWE services and merchandising agreement. It was not reported as $30 million in cash for his return or for the WrestleMania 40 storyline: the filing does not disclose a separate fee for either.
What did The Rock’s WWE deal disclose?
TKO Group Holdings said WWE entered an Independent Services Contractor and Merchandising Agreement with Johnson in the first quarter of 2024. The agreement covered promotional and other services, as well as related intellectual-property grants and licenses. In consideration for those services and rights, Johnson received an RSU award with an aggregate value of $30 million. TKO’s first-quarter 2024 SEC filing does not characterize that amount as a cash salary or a payment for a particular appearance.
The arrangement was broader than one event or storyline. TKO described a license to WWE for certain categories of licensed professional-wrestling products using specified intellectual property, for up to 10 years, subject to earlier termination rights. The filing does not allocate the award’s value among services, intellectual-property rights, the return, or WrestleMania 40.
Why $30 million is not a WrestleMania payday
An RSU award is equity compensation, not the same thing as receiving its stated aggregate value as cash. The filing reports an award value; it does not say Johnson was handed $30 million for returning to WWE, appearing at WrestleMania 40, or participating in the storyline.

#1 Best Overall
TKO recorded $9 million of equity-based compensation expense associated with the award in the three months ended March 31, 2024. That is an accounting expense recognized for the quarter, not a separate payment or an event-specific fee. TKO’s later annual report lists award-related equity compensation expense of $17.7 million in 2024 and $4.0 million in 2025; those are annual accounting expenses, not additional disclosed WrestleMania fees. TKO’s 2025 annual report provides those later expense figures.
Other amounts in the filing are separate
TKO also reported $0.1 million in royalties earned by Johnson and $1.9 million in company travel expenses associated with the agreement for the three months ended March 31, 2024. Of the travel expenses, $1.7 million was payable to him as of March 31. Royalties and travel reimbursements are different categories from the RSU award, and neither is identified as a WrestleMania fee. They should not be added to the $30 million and presented as a single event payday. The quarterly filing reports these figures separately.

What Johnson said about the deal’s value
The Associated Press reported that Johnson declined to discuss the deal’s financial value in a CNBC interview. AP quoted him saying of the name “The Rock,” “I owe that name everything,” and adding, “Without that name there’d be no wrestling career. There’d be no Hollywood career.” The AP report, published January 23, 2024, does not supply a separate return or WrestleMania payment figure.

What the public record establishes
- Disclosed award: $30 million in aggregate value in RSUs under a wider services and merchandising agreement.
- Not disclosed: a specific cash fee for Johnson’s WWE return or WrestleMania 40 storyline.
- Different accounting measure: TKO’s reported compensation expenses reflect amounts recognized in reporting periods, not a WrestleMania-specific payment.
- Separate deal components: royalties and travel expenses appear in the filing as distinct items.
