What Shonda Rhimes reportedly paid
The Westport Journal reported the sale in October 2022 at $15.17 million, citing the Wall Street Journal. Architectural Digest later reported an October 2022 purchase price of $15.175 million. The difference is a matter of reported precision: the first figure is rounded, while the later account gives an additional $5,000. Neither figure should be read as an independently verified deed amount based on the reporting available here.

The Westport Journal said the town’s property-transfer records had not yet reflected the sale when its story appeared. CT Insider likewise noted that the sale and location were not yet publicly recorded in town transfer data at the time of its account.

CT Insider, citing Mansion Global, described the property as 7.5 acres with an approximately 38,000-square-foot, 11-bedroom home. The Westport Journal reported a pool, tennis court, bowling alley and pizza oven. Architectural Digest describes the home as a sprawling New England Colonial-style residence commissioned by sellers Melissa and Doug Bernstein and built in 2008. These are publication-reported descriptions, not independently verified measurements or a current inspection.

The contemporaneous accounts place the property off Easton Road in Westport. They do not establish a more precise address, so one should not be inferred from this reporting.
Who sold the home, and what was said about the sale
Reports identify Melissa and Doug Bernstein, founders of the Melissa & Doug toy company, as the sellers. The Westport Journal also attributed to seller-side Compass agent Karen Scott’s Instagram post the claim that the transaction was Westport’s highest-priced non-waterfront property sale at the time. That is a historical, attributed claim—not evidence of the town’s current record in 2026.

Why Rhimes said she chose Westport
At a Westport Library fundraising event, the Westport Journal reported that Rhimes was asked how she handled fame and a demanding schedule. The paper quoted her response: “You move to Westport.” It also quoted her saying, “Most people here are interested in their families and their lives … Somehow here none of that [fame] matters, and that’s delightful to me.” These quotations are as rendered by the newspaper’s account of the event.

The Town of Westport Assessor’s Office says property records and field cards are available through Vision Appraisal and that the data is updated daily. The specific parcel record was not retrieved for these accounts, so current ownership, title details, assessment, tax bill and present-day property condition are not established here. The reported purchase price and property specifications should therefore be understood as figures published by the cited outlets, not as a current appraisal or confirmation of the estate’s present state.
