Yes: in April 2025, Shein and Temu told U.S. customers they planned price adjustments starting April 25, citing higher operating expenses tied to recent trade rules and tariffs. Neither company disclosed how much prices would change. That establishes an announcement, not a measured price increase across every item—or proof of how much of any change came from tariffs.
What Shein and Temu told customers
On April 16, 2025, the Associated Press reported that the two companies had posted separate, nearly identical notices to customers. They said price adjustments would begin April 25 because operating expenses had risen “due to recent changes in global trade rules and tariffs.” The notices did not give a dollar amount or percentage. The AP report records what the companies said; it does not independently measure resulting prices.
CBS also quoted Shein’s notice: “We’re doing everything we can to keep prices low and minimize the impact on you.” CBS’s report likewise does not quantify the adjustment.
What changed in the trade rules—and when
The policy developments happened in stages. The April 2025 change initially concerned covered goods from China and Hong Kong; later actions suspended de minimis treatment more broadly. Those dates describe policy status, not a fresh price announcement from either retailer.

Why eliminating the exemption can affect costs
De minimis is a duty-free treatment for qualifying low-value imports. When that treatment is unavailable, applicable duties and related import handling can add costs to covered shipments. A retailer may absorb some costs, pass some through to customers, or adjust prices in other ways. The companies’ notices attributed their planned adjustments to higher operating expenses associated with trade rules and tariffs, but did not break down the contribution of any particular duty or cost.
The White House’s April 2025 executive-summary fact sheet estimated that the exemption meant approximately $10.8 billion in foregone tariff revenue in 2024 and said nearly four million packages arrived each day under de minimis. These are figures attributed to the administration, not independent estimates established by the price notices. The White House executive summary presents those claims.

What the announcements do—and do not—prove
- Established: Both companies announced planned U.S. price adjustments with an April 25, 2025 start date and cited recent trade rules and tariffs as part of the operating-expense explanation.
- Not established: The size of the planned increases, whether every announced change was implemented, or a platform-wide average price movement.
- Not established: A comparable before-and-after basket of current prices, or the tariff’s exact share of the price of any individual item.
So “Shein and Temu announced price adjustments after tariff and duty-free rule changes” is supported. A specific percentage increase, a claim that every product became more expensive, or a precise tariff pass-through figure is not supported by these notices and policy documents.

The notices explain why the companies said they intended to adjust prices; they do not tell shoppers what a specific item costs now or whether it is more expensive than before. To assess a purchase, compare the current checkout total for the same item—including shipping and any disclosed fees—with a reliable earlier price for that exact item. Do not treat the April 2025 announcement alone as proof of a particular present-day price change.

The April 2025 White House fact sheet’s postal-duty description is historical. The later Federal Register notice establishes broad suspension context, but these sources do not establish current platform shipping or checkout practices. For practical import or postal questions, consult current CBP guidance rather than applying the April 2025 description as if it were still the current method.
