Ryan Reynolds has not received a publicly disclosed payout from the Aviation Gin sale, and the $610 million figure widely repeated in coverage is not his money. It is the maximum total consideration Diageo agreed to pay for two companies, Aviation Gin LLC and Davos Brands LLC, in 2020. Diageo’s announcement says Reynolds kept an ongoing ownership interest, but it does not disclose his percentage, what he originally paid, how much cash he received, or his profit. The same primary documents do not give his reasons for selling.
What Diageo actually bought
On 17 August 2020, Diageo announced it would acquire Aviation American Gin by buying Aviation Gin LLC and Davos Brands LLC. Davos also held Astral Tequila, Sombra Mezcal, and TYKU Sake, so the price covers a portfolio of brands rather than gin alone. Diageo completed the acquisition on 30 September 2020. Any reading of the deal value has to start from that structure: the buyer purchased companies, and Reynolds was one of the owners of the business being sold.

How the performance-linked payment works
The $275 million is not a bonus Reynolds collected. It is potential consideration that depends on how Aviation Gin performs over the following decade, and it is conditional by design. A reader comparing the $610 million headline with a bank balance should treat the contingent portion as unrealized until a filing shows it was paid. The filings reviewed do not state that the full $275 million was paid, and they do not state that it will be.

What is known about Reynolds’s stake
Diageo’s announcement describes Reynolds as a co-owner who contributed creative direction and who would keep an ongoing ownership interest after the acquisition. That is the full extent of the public detail. The announcement does not give his ownership percentage, the economic terms of the retained interest, or how the upfront and contingent payments are divided among the sellers. Without those terms, no reliable personal figure can be derived from the deal headline.
Why the $610 million cannot be turned into his earnings
- The ceiling covers the whole transaction. It includes every company and brand Diageo acquired, not only Reynolds’s share.
- The upfront figure is also a deal-level number. The $335 million and $337 million figures describe the total initial payment for the acquired companies, not what any one owner received.
- The ownership split is undisclosed. Reynolds’s percentage is not stated, so no share of either payment can be attributed to him.
- Contingent payments are unresolved. The amount and timing of any performance-linked payments are not disclosed.
- Cost, tax, and timing data are missing. The documents do not state what he invested, what he owes in tax, or when cash changed hands, so net gain cannot be calculated.
Any single dollar figure for Reynolds’s personal earnings would therefore be an estimate built on assumptions the public record does not support.

Why Diageo bought the business
Diageo’s stated rationale was participation in the U.S. super-premium gin segment and its strategy of acquiring high-growth brands with attractive margins. Ivan Menezes, then Chief Executive of Diageo, said in the announcement: “We are delighted to announce this transaction, which supports our participation in the super premium gin segment in the United States.” That is the company’s own explanation, not an independent assessment of how the acquisition has turned out.
The announcement also cited growth figures attributed to IWSR for 2019. They describe the market at the time of the announcement and are historical, not current brand performance:

The only statement from him in the announcement explains why he became an owner in the first place: “A little over two years ago, I became an owner of Aviation Gin because I love the taste of Aviation more than any other spirit.” That describes his entry into the brand, not his reasons for selling. Diageo’s rationale covers its own strategy, so any explanation of Reynolds’s motives would go beyond the evidence.
What readers can take from the deal
The clearest answer to the headline question is narrow: the Diageo deal establishes a transaction value and a retained ownership stake for Reynolds, but not his personal proceeds.
