Which transfer is the reported £7m windfall?
The figure is linked to Zian Flemming’s move from Millwall to Burnley. BBC Sport and EFL analysis site Not The Top 20 both describe the fee as a reported £7 million. Neither account establishes the amount or timing of cash received by Millwall. BBC Sport; Not The Top 20.
That distinction matters: a reported transfer fee is not the same as a confirmed cash receipt. The sources do not give a payment schedule, identify any add-ons in Flemming’s deal, or establish Millwall’s net proceeds after costs or other financial arrangements. A later opinion article by The72 says Millwall made over £4 million from Flemming’s departure, but it does not document audited proceeds or explain how that figure relates to the reported £7 million fee. How did the sales relate to Millwall’s January 2025 recruitment?
In a BBC Sport fan column published on 4 February 2025, Nick Hart described Millwall’s January window as extraordinary and record-breaking. He wrote that the club made eight attack-minded signings, with the activity fuelled by the reported departures of Flemming and Romain Esse. Hart reported Esse’s move to Crystal Palace at £14.5 million and said Camiel Neghli joined for a believed club-record £4.5 million. Those are reported figures, not verified cash receipts or audited spending totals.
Not The Top 20 later reported Esse’s fee differently: £12 million plus add-ons. The two accounts do not match, and the available sources do not resolve the difference. It would therefore be misleading to treat either Esse figure—or the reported Flemming fee—as a confirmed sum available for Millwall to spend.

What does the player-trading strategy mean for Millwall?
Not The Top 20’s June 2025 EFL Transfer Bulletin presents the sales of Flemming and Esse as part of a broader shift toward player trading: recruit and develop players, then potentially sell them for a profit. Its analysis says Millwall had not sold a player for more than £5 million, apart from George Saville, before the reported Flemming and Esse deals. This approach can create room to refresh a squad, but a sale does not automatically translate into equivalent funds for new players. The strategy depends on finding talent, developing it, planning succession and recruiting well enough to maintain performance. Not The Top 20 stresses that execution is difficult and success is not guaranteed.

So, did Millwall receive £7m in cash?
The sources support describing Flemming’s move as a reported £7 million transfer fee. They do not establish that Millwall received £7 million in cash, when any payment arrived, or how much the club ultimately retained. The evidence also does not support treating transfer fees as a direct measure of the money available for recruitment.
