Mike Ashley’s 2007 bid to take over Newcastle United was reported at £133 million. That figure describes the reported bid value, not a verified total of every cost or liability associated with the purchase. Sheffield Wednesday is a separate, now-completed takeover: the EFL confirmed in May 2026 that Arise Capital Partners LLC had taken the club’s assets and that it was no longer in administration.
What was Mike Ashley’s reported Newcastle United bid?
On 23 May 2007, The Guardian reported that Ashley had bought a 41.6% stake and launched a £133 million bid for the remaining shares. The report said he offered 100 pence per share, the same price he paid to Sir John Hall.
So, £133 million is the commonly reported value of Ashley’s takeover bid. It should not be read as an audited accounting of his total cash outlay, inherited liabilities or transaction costs; the cited report does not establish those amounts.
When did Ashley buy Newcastle?
Ashley later dated the purchase himself. In a statement reproduced by Sky Sports on 15 September 2008, he said, “I bought Newcastle United in May 2007.” Sky Sports reproduced the statement.

What happened when Newcastle changed ownership in 2021?
Newcastle United announced that a PIF-led investment group’s acquisition of 100% of Newcastle United Limited and Newcastle United Football Club Limited completed on 7 October 2021. The club’s announcement confirms the date and ownership transfer but does not give a sale price. The club announcement and the Premier League statement confirm completion.

Is Mike Ashley buying Sheffield Wednesday?
No. The takeover wording is out of date. On 10 March 2026, Sheffield Wednesday’s administrators named Arise Capital Partners LLC as preferred bidder and said its offer was below the amount needed to pay creditors 25 pence in the pound. The administrators’ update described the offer and the creditor-return comparison.

On 2 May 2026, the EFL said the administrators had concluded an agreement with Arise to transfer the club’s assets. It confirmed that Sheffield Wednesday was under new ownership and no longer in administration. The EFL identified Arise—not Ashley—as the party to the agreement. The EFL statement also quoted Chief Executive Trevor Birch describing the period as “an extremely testing time” for the club and those associated with it.
