What was reported about the 2022 Southampton takeover?
Southampton announced on 4 January 2022 that Sport Republic had completed the acquisition of a controlling stake, but the club’s announcement gave no price or full transaction terms: Southampton’s announcement.

Contemporary media reports put the price at about £100 million for an 80% stake. Sky Sports reported a £100 million takeover deal for 80%; the Financial Times reported that Šolak would pay £100 million for the 80% stake, citing people familiar with the matter. The £100 million figure is reported consideration for that stake, not an official club-confirmed price.
Why was a £200m–£250m figure also reported?
The Financial Times separately cited an estimated enterprise value of £200 million to £250 million, including debt. Enterprise value and the consideration for an ownership stake are different measures: the former includes debt, while the reported £100 million was for the 80% stake. Neither figure establishes an officially disclosed purchase price for 100% of Southampton’s equity, and the club has not published the contractual debt treatment.

What does Southampton’s later “more than £200 million” claim mean?
In a statement on 20 May 2026, Southampton chief executive Phil Parsons said the club had been denied “the opportunity to compete in a game worth more than £200 million”. The statement concerned Southampton’s expulsion from the Championship play-offs and a four-point deduction for the 2026/27 season. The figure was the club’s characterization of the value of the lost play-off/promotion opportunity; it was not a sale price or an acquisition figure. Is Šolak selling Southampton for £200m?
A report dated 23 September 2026 quoted Parsons as saying, “No, I don’t believe so,” when asked whether Šolak was looking to sell. The same report said Šolak was open to outside investment and held around a 90% share. These are attributed claims in the Daily Echo report carried by Yahoo Sports, not confirmation of a formal sale process, an agreed sale, or a £200 million offer.

What is known about Southampton’s ownership?
Southampton’s current leadership page says the club is 100% owned by St Mary’s Football Group Ltd, which is majority owned by Sport Republic, and identifies Šolak as the ultimate beneficial owner. It does not give a percentage for his individual holding. The reported “around 90%” figure comes from the September 2026 news report, rather than that official ownership description.
