Carlyle acquired RuneScape publisher Jagex in January 2021, but its purchase price was not publicly disclosed. Jagex CEO Phil Mansell later said it was “a fair assumption” that Carlyle paid more than $530 million. That was an interview characterization—not a confirmed deal value. The $530 million figure belongs to Jagex’s previous sale in 2020.
What is known about Carlyle’s purchase price?
The public record described here does not give a confirmed price for Carlyle’s January 2021 acquisition of Jagex. In a January 29, 2021 interview with PCGamesInsider, Jagex CEO Phil Mansell said it was “a fair assumption” that Jagex “went for more than $530 million.” The interview said no figure had been publicly placed on Carlyle’s deal. Treat the remark as a contemporaneous indication, not an announced or verified purchase price.

Where did the $530 million figure come from?
Jagex announced on April 28, 2020, that Macarthur Fortune Holding LLC had acquired the company through Platinum Fortune LP from Shanghai Hongtou Network Technology for $530 million. That is the disclosed price for the 2020 transaction—not Carlyle’s price a few months later. Jagex’s announcement is available in its April 2020 release.
How the three Jagex transactions differ
| Date | Buyer or agreed buyers | What happened | Price disclosure |

Jagex confirmed Carlyle’s January 2021 acquisition in its 2021 financial results announcement. On February 9, 2024, Carlyle and Jagex each announced an agreement for CVC Capital Partners Fund VIII and Haveli Investments to acquire the company. Their releases said the terms were not disclosed: see Carlyle’s announcement and Jagex’s announcement. The announcement establishes an agreement, not by itself that the sale closed; these releases do not establish a closing date.

What Jagex’s business figures do—and do not—tell you
Jagex reported revenue of £124.86 million for the 2021 financial year, a 4% increase over its previous peak in 2020. It also said RuneScape reached its highest-ever paid-membership count. Those figures provide business context, but they do not reveal Carlyle’s acquisition price or establish Jagex’s valuation.
In its February 2024 release, Jagex described RuneScape as having generated more than $1.5 billion in lifetime franchise revenue over 23 years and reported more than 320 million player accounts. The account figure is not a count of active or unique current players. The company also described itself as having more than 700 employees; Carlyle’s release put the headcount at approximately 700.
Why Carlyle’s ownership matters to the timeline
Jagex is a Cambridge-based British video-game developer and publisher best known for RuneScape and Old School RuneScape, which it describes as PC and mobile games. Carlyle said it invested in Jagex through Carlyle Partners VII and Carlyle Europe Technology Partners IV. During its ownership, Carlyle said it supported growth in Jagex’s core games, distribution, content, user acquisition and gameplay experience, alongside acquisitions and portfolio diversification. Those are Carlyle’s descriptions of its involvement, not independently measured outcomes.
Jagex acquired Pipeworks Studios and Gamepires in 2022; Gamepires developed the open-world survival game SCUM. These acquisitions help explain Jagex’s expansion during the period, but they do not substantiate a particular Carlyle purchase price.
