That is the clearest band-wide figure available here, but it is a historical label statement—not an exact, current total for album sales or every format.
What does “over 70 million” mean?
In an announcement dated November 11, 2011, Universal Music Canada said Black Sabbath was “Selling over 70 million albums together” while announcing the original lineup’s reunion, recording plans and record deal. The wording refers to albums and gives a threshold, not an exact count. The announcement does not explain its accounting method or update the total to the present. So the practical answer depends on what you mean by “sell”: the historical worldwide album figure is over 70 million; a current, audited worldwide total across albums, singles and streaming equivalents is not established by this figure.
Why other sales records do not produce a current worldwide total
U.S. certifications measure specific recordings
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) database lists Black Sabbath’s Paranoid as 4× Platinum, with a certification dated January 31, 1995, alongside earlier entries. That documents a U.S. award milestone for that album; it is not a count of the band’s total sales. The RIAA describes its Gold & Platinum program as a way to honor artists and track sound-recording sales. RIAA Gold & Platinum database · About the RIAA awards

UK chart history shows chart performance
The Official Charts Company lists Paranoid among Black Sabbath’s UK number-one albums and maintains the band’s chart history. Chart positions and appearances show performance in that market, but they do not establish a cumulative number of copies sold worldwide. Official Charts Company: Black Sabbath chart history
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to read the figures without adding unlike measures
- Geography: Universal Music Canada’s statement gives a band-wide figure; RIAA awards concern the U.S. market, while Official Charts records UK chart performance.
- Measure: The label reported an album total. RIAA certifications are award milestones for individual recordings or albums; chart rankings are not unit totals.
- Time: The band-wide statement dates to 2011, and the cited Paranoid certification is dated January 31, 1995. Neither is a current all-format count.
- Format: The 70-million-plus statement says albums. It does not specify a total combining albums, singles and streaming equivalents.
Because these records cover different markets, measures and dates, adding them together would not yield a defensible sales total. The most accurate short answer remains the dated report of over 70 million albums, with no exact current worldwide figure established by these sources.

- Sabotage is the sixth studio album by English rock band Black Sabbath, originally released in July 1975. It was recorded in the midst of litigation with their former manager Patrick Meehan and the stress that resulted from the band's ongoing legal woes infiltrated the recording process, inspiring the album's title. It was co-produced by guitarist Tony Iommi and Mike Butcher.
