There is no publicly established figure for how much Dave Chappelle personally keeps from his Netflix specials after taxes and expenses. Forbes reported in 2017 that he earned an estimated $47 million during its measurement period and cited a reported fee of $20 million per hour for three specials. Those are historical estimates and reported deal terms—not a confirmed after-tax payout.
What the reported $20 million figure means
In 2017, Forbes reported that Chappelle had a deal for three Netflix specials at $20 million per hour. Forbes also listed his earnings at an estimated $47 million for its 2017 Celebrity 100 period. The $20 million-per-hour rate was secondary reporting, not a publicly disclosed contract, and the $47 million figure was an estimate of his total earnings for the period—not a verified Netflix check or a net amount from the specials. Forbes reported the deal and earnings figure.

Forbes described its comedian-list estimates as pretax income from June 1, 2016, through June 1, 2017, and said it did not deduct fees for managers, agents, or lawyers. That makes the $47 million a useful historical earnings estimate, but not a measure of what Chappelle took home.
Why there is no reliable after-tax take-home estimate
The cited public information does not disclose Chappelle’s tax returns, filing jurisdiction, business structure, deductions, or payment allocation. Nor does it provide his full agreements with representatives or a complete production-cost ledger for each special. Without those details, applying a generic tax rate or subtracting an assumed expense percentage would produce a guess, not a defensible estimate.

It is also important to distinguish costs borne by Netflix from expenses paid by Chappelle. Netflix’s 2024 Form 10-K describes broad content-cost categories, including acquisition, licensing and production, music rights, talent deals, and participations or residuals. The filing does not assign those costs to Chappelle or identify a special-specific amount. Netflix’s filing describes company-wide accounting categories, not his personal expenses.
Six Netflix specials do not establish six identical fees
Netflix’s materials identify six specials in the body of work completed by The Closer: The Age of Spin, Deep in the Heart of Texas, Equanimity, The Bird Revelation, Sticks & Stones, and The Closer. Its description of Equanimity and The Bird Revelation calls them his third and fourth Netflix specials in 2017; the The Closer page says it completed the body of work. Netflix’s 2017 title description and its page for The Closer confirm the titles and sequence.
Rank #2
The available reporting does not establish that all six specials were covered by the same contract or paid at the reported rate. Multiplying $20 million by six would therefore turn an unconfirmed rate for a reported three-special deal into an unsupported total.

In 2020, Chappelle asked Netflix to remove Chappelle’s Show amid a separate streaming-rights dispute. The Los Angeles Times reported that the rights deal was with ViacomCBS and that Chappelle said he received no money under that arrangement because he had signed the contract years earlier. That dispute concerned the show’s rights, not compensation for his Netflix stand-up specials. The newspaper’s account distinguishes the separate deal.
