Sky Sports attributed the sum to a 10% sell-on clause; it is a reported estimate, not a final payment confirmed in Coventry’s accounts.
How much was Coventry City set to receive?
Sky Sports reported that Coventry would receive just over £4 million under the sell-on clause attached to Gyökeres’ move to Sporting. The clause reportedly entitled Coventry to 10% when Sporting sold the striker to Arsenal. The final receipt has not been established in Coventry’s published accounts reviewed here, so the £4 million figure should be treated as Sky’s report rather than a confirmed accounting total. Sky Sports’ report
Why was Coventry’s share 10%?
Sky Sports reported that Coventry initially held a 15% sell-on clause. The club later sold five percentage points back to Sporting for an undisclosed amount, leaving a reported 10% interest when Gyökeres moved to Arsenal. The amount Coventry received for reducing the clause was not disclosed, so it cannot be added to the reported Arsenal-transfer proceeds to calculate a complete total.
How does that compare with Arsenal’s payment to Sporting?
Sporting’s disclosure, reproduced by Portuguese newspaper Record, put the transfer consideration at €76,020,513. It comprised €65,764,103 fixed and up to €10,256,410 in performance-related variables. Sporting said the disclosed amounts included financing costs and solidarity amounts due to third-party clubs. Record’s report of Sporting’s disclosure

| Figure | What it represents | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Just over £4 million | Coventry’s reported sell-on proceeds | Sky Sports estimate under a reported 10% clause; final payment not confirmed in Coventry’s accounts |
| €65,764,103 | Fixed component payable to Sporting | Sporting disclosure reproduced by Record; disclosed amounts include financing costs and solidarity amounts due to third-party clubs |
| Up to €10,256,410 | Performance-related variable component | Conditional add-ons, not a guaranteed fixed fee; same disclosure basis |
| €76,020,513 | Total disclosed consideration | Sporting disclosure reproduced by Record; includes the fixed and maximum variable components |
These are different figures for different recipients: Sporting’s disclosed consideration is not Coventry’s sell-on payment. The £4 million report should not be described as 10% of the full gross fee without evidence of the clause’s precise calculation basis.
When did Gyökeres join Arsenal?
Arsenal announced the signing on 26 July 2025, making this a completed transfer rather than a future move. The Premier League says Gyökeres joined on a long-term contract. BBC Sport reported a five-year deal and an agreement worth up to €73 million (£64 million), with a €63 million initial fee and €10 million in add-ons. Those rounded and converted figures differ from Sporting’s more precise disclosed total; the disclosures should be presented with their sources rather than treated as identical totals. Why did Coventry have a sell-on interest?
Gyökeres played for Coventry before joining Sporting in July 2023. His scoring record at Coventry is reported differently by the two sources: BBC Sport gives 43 goals in 116 Championship appearances, while the Premier League says he scored 40 goals during his two seasons with the club. Their stated scopes or record bases differ, and the available information does not resolve the discrepancy. BBC Sport · Premier League
His subsequent form helped make the Sporting-to-Arsenal transfer a major deal. The Premier League recorded 54 goals in 52 appearances across all competitions in 2024–25, including 39 league goals. That sporting record provides context for the transfer, but it does not establish how Coventry’s sell-on clause was calculated.
