Re:

How Much Can You Safely Withdraw From Retirement Savings Each Month?

A 3.9% annual starting rate is Morningstar’s 2025 benchmark for a 30-year, inflation-adjusted retirement plan. Here is how that translates into monthly income and why your own number may differ.

There is no single monthly amount that is safe for everyone. As a current planning benchmark, Morningstar’s 2025 analysis estimates a 3.9% starting annual withdrawal rate for a new retiree who wants inflation-adjusted spending over 30 years, with a modeled 90% probability of having money left at the end. On a $1 million portfolio, that is $39,000 in the first year, or an arithmetic average of $3,250 per month before taxes and fees.

That figure is a starting estimate, not a guarantee or a personal recommendation. Your time horizon, investments, essential expenses, other income, tax situation and willingness to reduce spending after market declines can move the appropriate amount substantially.

What the 3.9% benchmark actually means

Morningstar’s estimate is an annual withdrawal plan translated into a monthly number. It assumes the retiree begins with a percentage of the portfolio, then generally raises the dollar withdrawal with inflation. The analysis covers a 30-year retirement and targets a 90% modeled probability of having funds remaining at the end. It excludes Social Security, pensions and other nonportfolio income.

For a $1 million portfolio, 3.9% produces $39,000 in year one. Dividing that annual amount by 12 gives $3,250 per month. The study does not require you to take exactly one-twelfth every month: withdrawals could be monthly, quarterly or irregular, provided the annual plan is consistent with the strategy.

Morningstar describes the “right” rate as changing with equity valuations, bond yields, inflation prospects, life expectancy and asset allocation. Its 3.9% result therefore describes the conditions and assumptions in its 2025 model, not a permanent rule for every market or household.

Illustrative monthly amounts at 3.9%

Starting portfolio First-year withdrawal at 3.9% Average per month before taxes and fees
$250,000 $9,750 $812.50
$500,000 $19,500 $1,625
$750,000 $29,250 $2,437.50
$1,000,000 $39,000 $3,250
$1,500,000 $58,500 $4,875
$2,000,000 $78,000 $6,500

These are simple illustrations: portfolio value, withdrawal rate and 12-month division are the only inputs. They do not account for investment returns, inflation after the first year, taxes, fees or income from other sources.

Is the traditional 4% rule still safe?

The familiar 4% rule is a historical rule of thumb summarized by Morningstar from William Bengen’s work. It starts with 4% of the initial portfolio and then increases the dollar withdrawal for inflation. Calling it a “rule” can make it sound more certain than it is. Historical results do not guarantee future markets, and the result depends on the retirement length, asset mix and spending behavior used in the analysis.

Morningstar’s forward-looking 2025 baseline is 3.9% under its stated 30-year, inflation-adjusted spending assumptions. The difference is small in a single year but meaningful over decades. Neither percentage should be treated as permission to withdraw the same amount regardless of market conditions.

Why your safe monthly amount may be higher or lower

Retirement horizon

A 30-year model may be too short for someone retiring in their 50s or living well into their 90s. A longer horizon gives the portfolio more years in which withdrawals and poor returns can compound. Someone with a shorter expected horizon may choose a different starting rate, but longevity is uncertain and should not be reduced to an average life expectancy.

Essential versus discretionary spending

Rent or mortgage payments, food, utilities, insurance and health costs are harder to cut than travel, gifts or entertainment. A plan that requires reducing essential bills after a market decline is fragile. Guaranteed income can cover more of the non-negotiable expenses, allowing portfolio withdrawals to support discretionary spending that can be postponed when balances fall.

Portfolio allocation and market conditions

The mix of stocks, bonds and cash affects both growth potential and volatility. High equity exposure can produce larger swings; a very conservative mix may have less growth to offset inflation. Morningstar notes that valuations, bond yields and inflation prospects influence the appropriate starting rate, so a percentage that worked in one market environment is not automatically suitable in another.

Other income

Social Security, a pension, an annuity, part-time work or rental income reduces the amount that must come from savings. The 3.9% estimate is a portfolio-only figure. Add those other sources separately when building a household cash-flow plan rather than treating them as part of the withdrawal percentage.

Legacy and bequests

If leaving a substantial balance is a priority, you may choose a lower draw or a method that reduces withdrawals after poor returns. If the main objective is lifetime spending and you can tolerate variation, a flexible method may support a higher initial amount.

How to calculate a starting monthly withdrawal

  1. List investable retirement assets. Include the accounts that will fund spending, and separate them from a cash reserve or assets reserved for another purpose.
  2. Choose a planning rate and horizon. Use the 3.9% figure only as a 2025 starting benchmark for the assumptions described above. A different horizon, spending objective or flexible strategy requires a different analysis.
  3. Multiply the portfolio by the rate. For example, $800,000 × 0.039 equals $31,200 in the first year.
  4. Convert to a payment schedule. Dividing $31,200 by 12 gives a $2,600 monthly average. You could instead take $7,800 quarterly or use an irregular schedule that totals the annual target.
  5. Add reliable nonportfolio income. Include expected Social Security, pensions or other income to estimate total gross cash flow.
  6. Subtract taxes, fees and withheld amounts. The result from the percentage calculation is gross. Your spendable amount depends on account type, tax basis, federal and state taxes, and investment costs.
  7. Check the plan against essential expenses. If the total cannot cover necessities without optimistic market returns, reduce spending, increase guaranteed income, work longer or save more before relying on the portfolio.

Withdrawal methods and their trade-offs

The percentage is only one decision. The method determines how your monthly income behaves after the portfolio rises or falls.

Approach How it works Main strength Main trade-off
Fixed real withdrawal Set an initial percentage, then generally increase the dollar amount with inflation. Predictable planned spending. A fixed inflation-adjusted amount can strain the portfolio after poor early returns or high inflation.
Constant percentage Withdraw a fixed percentage of the current portfolio value. Dollar withdrawals automatically fall after a portfolio decline. Income can vary sharply from year to year.
Endowment-style Apply a percentage to a multi-year average portfolio value. Smooths some balance volatility. Income can lag sudden changes and remains variable.
Guardrails or dynamic spending Reassess withdrawals when portfolio results cross preset boundaries. Connects spending changes to market conditions and can support a higher starting rate. Requires monitoring and a willingness to cut spending or limit increases.
RMD-based withdrawals Take the required minimum from applicable tax-deferred accounts. Meets legal minimum-distribution requirements. The required amount is not automatically the budget you want, and taxable distributions may exceed your preferred draw.

Morningstar’s 2025 discussion reports that a flexible strategy can support a starting rate of nearly 6% for retirees willing to accept fluctuating income. That figure is not directly comparable with the 3.9% fixed, inflation-adjusted baseline: the higher starting rate comes with the requirement to reduce withdrawals when the portfolio is weak.

Traditional accounts and required minimum distributions

The Internal Revenue Service generally requires owners of traditional IRAs and many workplace retirement plans to begin required minimum distributions (RMDs) in the year they turn 73, subject to account-specific exceptions and plan rules. The first RMD can generally be delayed until April 1 of the following year. Delaying it can mean taking two taxable RMDs in that next calendar year: the delayed first distribution and the distribution due for that year.

An RMD is generally calculated using the account balance on the prior December 31 divided by the applicable IRS life-expectancy factor. Because the balance and factor change, the required amount changes too. An RMD satisfies a legal minimum; it does not tell you how much your household should spend.

Taxable and Roth distributions

The taxable portion of a withdrawal from a traditional IRA or plan is generally included in income. Qualified Roth distributions and amounts representing previously taxed basis can receive different treatment. Your filing status, other income and state rules can change the amount ultimately owed, so a $3,250 gross monthly draw should not be presented as $3,250 of net spending.

Withdrawals before age 59½

Under general IRS guidance, distributions from an IRA or retirement plan before age 59½ are generally subject to an additional 10% tax unless an exception applies. The additional tax does not apply to every early withdrawal, and reaching 59½ does not make every distribution tax-free. Account rules and exceptions need to be checked for the specific transaction.

How to make the plan resilient

Separate a cash-flow schedule from a percentage rule

You may want a regular monthly transfer even when the calculation is annual. Keep the annual target and payment frequency distinct: a monthly transfer is an administrative choice, while the withdrawal rate is a portfolio-risk decision.

Set a review trigger before markets fall

Decide in advance what would cause a spending review, such as a sustained portfolio decline or an inflation jump. A guardrail plan is useful only when its boundaries and the spending response are written down before emotions take over.

Protect necessities first

Use guaranteed income and a conservative withdrawal plan for essential bills where possible. Treat discretionary withdrawals as the adjustable part of the budget so that a weak market does not force an immediate cut to housing, food or medical care.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recheck taxes and RMDs annually

Account balances, tax brackets, withholding and RMD amounts change. Review the gross-to-net calculation each year, especially when an RMD begins or when a delayed first RMD creates two distributions in one tax year.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Dividing a balance by 12. That ignores longevity, inflation and investment risk. Use a withdrawal rate and a defined horizon instead.
  • Calling 3.9% a guarantee. It is a modeled starting estimate with a stated 90% success outcome, not an individual promise.
  • Comparing 3.9% and nearly 6% without noting flexibility. The higher figure assumes income can fall when the portfolio performs poorly.
  • Counting Social Security twice. The 3.9% portfolio estimate excludes it; add it separately.
  • Using an RMD as a spending recommendation. RMDs meet tax-law requirements and may not match your desired budget.
  • Ignoring gross-versus-net cash flow. Taxes, penalties, fees and withholding can materially reduce what reaches your bank account.
  • Assuming a 30-year horizon fits everyone. Early retirement, a longevity goal or a legacy objective may require a different plan.

Bottom line

For a new US retiree seeking relatively steady, inflation-adjusted spending over 30 years, Morningstar’s 2025 benchmark is 3.9% of the initial portfolio, or about $3,250 per month per $1 million before taxes and fees. Treat it as a starting point. Your sustainable monthly amount depends on how long the money must last, how much spending is essential, what other income you receive, how your accounts are taxed and whether you can reduce withdrawals after poor markets.
