Re:

How Much Can You Invest in a Child’s PPF Account Each Year, and Who Can Contribute?

A minor’s PPF deposits count toward the guardian’s ₹1,50,000 annual ceiling. Here’s who can open the account, how the shared limit works, and what to check before contributing.

You can deposit up to ₹1,50,000 in a child’s Public Provident Fund (PPF) account in a financial year, but that is not a separate allowance in addition to the guardian’s own PPF limit. Under India’s Public Provident Fund Scheme, 2019, an individual’s annual ceiling combines deposits to their own account with deposits to a minor’s account that they opened as guardian. A parent or other eligible guardian opens the account; only one account may be opened for a child.

The most important distinction is between the child’s account and the guardian’s limit. The child is the named account holder, but the person who opens the account as guardian is the person whose annual ceiling is used when calculating qualifying deposits.

How the child’s annual PPF limit works

The Public Provident Fund Scheme, 2019 sets a maximum deposit of ₹1,50,000 per individual for each financial year. The scheme expressly includes deposits made to the individual’s own PPF account and to an account that individual opened on behalf of a minor. The child’s account is in the child’s name, but its deposits count toward the guardian’s combined ceiling.

The Government of India’s wording is explicit: “Maximum limit of one lakh fifty thousand rupees specified in sub-paragraph (1) by an individual shall be inclusive of the deposits made in his own account and in the account opened on behalf of the minor.” In other words, the ₹1,50,000 figure belongs to the individual’s total qualifying deposits, not separately to every account connected with that person.

In practical terms, if you are the guardian who opened the child’s account, add together your own PPF deposits and deposits into that child’s account. The combined total must not exceed ₹1,50,000 for the financial year. There is no additional ₹1,50,000 limit for the child on top of yours. The scheme defines a “year” as a financial year, so the calculation is not based on a January-to-December calendar year.

Example for one guardian in a financial year Own PPF deposits Child’s PPF deposits Combined total
Guardian contributes the full limit to their own account ₹1,50,000 ₹0 ₹1,50,000
Guardian splits deposits equally ₹75,000 ₹75,000 ₹1,50,000
Guardian deposits ₹1,00,000 personally ₹1,00,000 Up to ₹50,000 Up to ₹1,50,000
Guardian deposits ₹50,000 personally ₹50,000 Up to ₹1,00,000 Up to ₹1,50,000
Guardian makes no personal deposit ₹0 Up to ₹1,50,000 Up to ₹1,50,000

These examples illustrate the shared ceiling in the 2019 scheme; they are not separate allowances or recommended contribution amounts. If an individual has more than one minor account opened as guardian, do not treat each account as creating a new personal limit: the scheme’s ceiling is for the individual.

What if the guardian has two children?

The scheme permits an individual to open an account on behalf of each minor for whom that individual is guardian. That opening rule does not multiply the individual ceiling. For example, if the same parent is guardian for two children and has opened one account for each, deposits into both minor accounts still have to be considered with that parent’s own PPF deposits under the single ₹1,50,000 annual maximum. The parent could divide the available amount between the accounts, but the total attributed to that individual cannot be treated as ₹1,50,000 per child.

Who may open the account?

The minor is the named account holder. An individual who is the child’s guardian may open one PPF account on the minor’s behalf. The scheme allows an individual to open an account for each minor for whom that individual is guardian, while also specifying that only one account may be opened in a minor’s name by any guardian. Joint accounts are not permitted.

Either parent may open the child’s account, but both parents cannot open separate PPF accounts for the same child. If one parent has already opened the account, the other parent should not attempt to create a second account in the child’s name. The account-opening right and the annual-limit calculation are related but distinct: the child owns the account, while the guardian’s own and qualifying minor-account deposits are combined under that guardian’s ceiling.

India Post’s operational manual repeats the guardian-based opening rule and the ₹1,50,000 ceiling. The Public Provident Fund Scheme, 2019 remains the controlling source if operational wording and a secondary explanation appear different.

Can a grandparent open a PPF account for a grandchild?

Punjab National Bank’s practical guidance says a grandparent cannot open a minor PPF account while the child’s parents are alive, unless the grandparent has been appointed the child’s legal guardian. This is bank guidance about account opening, not a substitute for the scheme’s rules. A grandparent should confirm eligibility and required documentation with the bank or post office handling the account.

Being a relative does not by itself create a second account-opening right or a separate annual contribution allowance. If a grandparent is the formally appointed legal guardian, the account office should confirm how that status is recorded and how the combined ceiling applies to that guardian.

Who can contribute money?

The clear rule is that the guardian opens the account and the annual limit is applied to that individual’s own PPF deposits plus deposits to the minor account they opened. The available rules and guidance do not clearly establish whether a relative or another third party may directly deposit money into the child’s account, or how such a deposit would be attributed when checking the combined ceiling.

If someone other than the recorded guardian intends to pay directly into the account, check with the account office or bank first. Ask whether the office accepts that payment method and how it records the deposit for the annual-limit calculation. Do not assume that routing a payment through another person creates a separate ₹1,50,000 allowance, transfers the guardian’s status, or changes whose deposits count toward the limit.

The safest way to plan contributions is to identify the recorded guardian first, keep a running total of that person’s own PPF deposits and relevant minor-account deposits, and obtain specific instructions before using a third party’s payment. The sources do not resolve the third-party question, so a bank or post-office confirmation is important when the payer is not the guardian.

Deposit minimums and instalments

The scheme allows a minimum deposit of ₹500. Deposits must be in multiples of ₹50 and may be made as one lump sum or in instalments, subject to the annual maximum. These rules let a guardian spread contributions through the financial year rather than depositing the entire intended amount at once.

  • Minimum: ₹500.
  • Deposit increments: multiples of ₹50.
  • Timing: one lump sum or instalments during the financial year.
  • Maximum: the guardian’s combined own-account and relevant minor-account deposits cannot exceed ₹1,50,000 for that financial year.

An instalment plan does not increase the ceiling. Whether the guardian makes one payment or several, all qualifying deposits are added together for the financial year. Each payment should meet the ₹500 minimum and ₹50-multiple requirement, while the aggregate remains within the remaining amount available to that individual.

A quick way to calculate the remaining amount

  1. Identify the guardian. Use the individual who opened the child’s account as guardian for the combined-limit calculation.
  2. List every relevant account. Include that person’s own PPF account and each minor account that person opened as guardian.
  3. Add deposits already made in the financial year. Count the person’s own deposits and deposits into the relevant minor account or accounts.
  4. Subtract the total from ₹1,50,000. The result is the remaining amount available under that individual’s annual ceiling, assuming no other relevant minor-account deposits.
  5. Check the deposit format. A deposit must be at least ₹500 and in multiples of ₹50; it may be made in one payment or instalments.
  6. Confirm unusual payment arrangements. Ask the account office or bank how it handles a direct deposit from someone other than the recorded guardian.

For example, if the guardian has already deposited ₹90,000 into their own PPF account during the financial year, the remaining room under the combined ceiling is ₹60,000 for deposits counted against that same individual. If the guardian has two minor accounts and has deposited ₹20,000 into one and ₹15,000 into the other, those ₹35,000 are also part of the same calculation. The calculation is about the guardian’s combined annual total, not a fresh limit attached to each child’s account.

Use the financial-year total rather than resetting the calculation on a birthday, account-opening anniversary or calendar-year change. The scheme’s “year” is the financial year, and the ₹1,50,000 ceiling applies within that defined period.

Account ownership versus limit attribution

These two ideas are often confused:

  • Account ownership: the minor is the named account holder.
  • Account opening: an eligible parent or guardian opens the account on the minor’s behalf.
  • Limit attribution: deposits in that minor account are included with the opening guardian’s own PPF deposits for the ₹1,50,000 annual ceiling.

Keeping the concepts separate explains why the child can have an account without receiving a second contribution allowance. It also explains why changing the person who pays, without confirming the account office’s treatment, should not be assumed to change the applicable ceiling.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Counting the child’s account as an extra allowance: the ₹1,50,000 maximum is shared with the guardian’s own PPF deposits.
  • Having both parents open an account for the same child: only one account may be opened in the minor’s name.
  • Treating two children as two personal limits: accounts for multiple minors opened by the same guardian still relate to that individual’s ceiling.
  • Assuming a grandparent can open the account automatically: PNB guidance limits this where the parents are alive, unless the grandparent is the appointed legal guardian.
  • Assuming a third party’s direct payment has a separate treatment: the cited rules do not clearly settle how such a payment is permitted or attributed. Confirm before relying on it.
  • Using the wrong period: the limit applies by financial year, not by calendar year.
  • Ignoring the payment specifications: each deposit must meet the ₹500 minimum and be in a multiple of ₹50, even when contributions are split into instalments.
  • Confusing an instalment schedule with extra capacity: several payments still count toward the same ₹1,50,000 annual total.

Which rule should you rely on?

The controlling rule is the Government of India’s Public Provident Fund Scheme, 2019. Its provisions address opening an account for a minor, restrictions on multiple or joint accounts, the individual annual ceiling and its combined calculation, and the minimum and format of deposits. India Post’s operational manual corroborates guardian eligibility and the ceiling. PNB’s FAQ adds a practical clarification on grandparents, which should be understood as bank guidance rather than as the scheme’s verbatim wording.

Use the 2019 scheme’s ₹1,50,000 figure for this limit question. Older PPF material may show superseded amounts. An interest rate is not needed to calculate the annual deposit ceiling and may change over time. For a question about who may physically make a payment, rely on confirmation from the specific bank or post-office account office because the cited rules do not clearly settle direct third-party deposits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a child’s PPF limit separate from the parent’s?

No. The ₹1,50,000 maximum is one combined annual ceiling for the individual. It includes the individual’s own PPF deposits and deposits into a minor’s account that the individual opened as guardian.

Can both parents open PPF accounts for the same child?

No. Either parent may open the account, but only one account may be opened in the minor’s name and joint accounts are not permitted.

Can a grandparent open a PPF account for a grandchild?

PNB guidance says not while the parents are alive, unless the grandparent has been appointed the child’s legal guardian. Confirm eligibility and documentation with the account office.

Can relatives deposit directly into a child’s PPF account?

The cited scheme and guidance do not clearly settle whether a third party may pay directly or how that payment would be attributed. Ask the bank or post office before relying on such a payment, and do not assume it creates another annual allowance.

What is the minimum PPF deposit for a minor’s account?

The minimum is ₹500. Deposits must be in multiples of ₹50 and may be made as one lump sum or in instalments during the financial year.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What period does the ₹1,50,000 limit cover?

It covers the financial year, because the Public Provident Fund Scheme, 2019 defines “year” as the financial year.

If a guardian has two children’s PPF accounts, is the limit ₹1,50,000 for each child?

No. The same guardian’s own deposits and deposits into all minor accounts that guardian opened are considered under that individual’s single ₹1,50,000 annual ceiling.

Who is the account holder when a parent opens a minor PPF account?

The minor is the named account holder. The parent or other eligible guardian opens the account on the child’s behalf, and the guardian’s deposits are used for the combined-limit calculation.

The Bottom Line

A child’s PPF account does not add a second ₹1,50,000 allowance. For each financial year, combine the recorded guardian’s own PPF deposits with deposits into the minor account that guardian opened; the total cannot exceed ₹1,50,000. Only one account may be opened for the child, deposits start at ₹500 in ₹50 multiples, and any direct payment by someone else should be confirmed with the bank or post office first.
