There is no universal personal-loan borrowing limit. The maximum depends first on the lender’s product range, then on what that lender’s underwriting approves for your income, credit, debts and employment profile. Finally, the amount you should borrow is the payment you can sustain without crowding out essential expenses or creating new high-cost debt.
Current lender examples show how widely limits vary: SoFi says eligible borrowers in most states may request $5,000 to $100,000, while Discover lists $2,500 to $40,000. Those are advertised product ranges, not promises that an applicant will receive the top amount.

Three different answers to “How much can I borrow?”
People often use “borrowing limit” to mean three different things. Keeping them separate prevents a lender’s headline maximum from being mistaken for a personal approval.
The lender’s advertised range
Every personal-loan product has a minimum and maximum principal. The maximum is a product or policy limit. It tells you what the lender might offer under its rules, but it does not account for your application.

Your approved amount
After reviewing your application, the lender may approve an amount anywhere inside its range, or decline the application. The decision can reflect your credit history, income, existing obligations, employment record and the lender’s own risk standards. Lenders generally do not publish a single formula that converts a credit score and income into a guaranteed amount.
Your affordable amount
An approval can still be larger than is sensible for your budget. A responsible target is an amount whose required payment fits after rent or mortgage costs, utilities, food, insurance, taxes, existing debt payments and realistic savings. Borrowing less than the approved maximum can reduce interest and make repayment less fragile.
Current advertised limits from two lenders
The following figures are examples of product limits, not market-wide statistics. SoFi’s support information, accessed October 9, 2026, describes availability for eligible borrowers in most states. Discover’s information dated June 18, 2026, states its amount and term ranges. State availability, underwriting rules and limits can change, so verify the lender’s current disclosures before applying.

| Lender | Advertised amount | Repayment term noted | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| SoFi | $5,000–$100,000 | 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 10 years | Range stated for eligible borrowers in most states; an individual offer can be lower or unavailable. |
| Discover | $2,500–$40,000 | 36–84 months | Product range; approval and pricing depend on the applicant’s eligibility. |
These two products demonstrate variation rather than an exhaustive survey. A lender with a $100,000 ceiling may still offer you less than a lender with a lower ceiling, depending on underwriting and your application.

What affects the amount a lender offers?
Credit history and score
Lenders use credit information to assess how you have handled borrowing. A stronger record may help with approval, pricing or a larger amount, while late payments, defaults, high balances or a short history can restrict the offer. There is no universal credit-score threshold that guarantees a particular principal.
Income and employment history
Income helps establish whether the proposed payment is supportable. Lenders may review the amount, source and consistency of income and your employment history. Income alone does not determine the result: two people earning the same amount can receive different offers because their debts, credit records and lender criteria differ.
Existing debt and debt-to-income ratio
Debt-to-income ratio (DTI) compares required monthly debt payments with gross monthly income. A basic calculation is:

For example, if qualifying debt payments total $1,800 and gross monthly income is $6,000, DTI is 30%. The calculation helps you understand how another payment could affect your profile, but it is not a universal approval rule. The lender may define which debts and income sources count, and the reviewed lender guidance did not establish one standard personal-loan DTI cutoff.
Lender policy and product design
Each lender sets its own maximum, minimum, term choices, permitted uses, state availability and risk policy. A lender can change those rules without changing the borrower’s finances. That is why an amount shown in an advertisement should be treated as a ceiling for that product, not as an entitlement.
Estimate a sensible amount before you apply
Before seeking a quote, work from the payment you can actually absorb rather than starting with the largest number advertised.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- List fixed obligations. Include housing, car payments, student loans, credit-card minimums, child support, insurance and other required bills.
- Calculate reliable monthly income. Use predictable take-home cash for your household budget. Treat irregular bonuses, overtime or freelance revenue conservatively unless it is stable and documentable.
- Set a maximum new payment. After ordinary living costs and a savings contribution, identify what remains. Leave a buffer for repairs, medical bills and income disruption instead of assigning every remaining dollar to debt.
- Test several terms. A longer term generally lowers the required monthly payment but can increase total interest. Compare the actual payment and total repayment shown in each offer.
- Request only the needed principal. If your project costs $18,000, borrowing $25,000 creates interest on money you do not need. Confirm whether the lender deducts an origination fee from proceeds, because the cash you receive could be below the stated principal.
This exercise estimates affordability; it does not predict approval. The lender may use different income, debt or verification definitions.

Compare actual offers, not just maximums
Once you have offers, evaluate the complete transaction. A larger approval can be inferior if its annual percentage rate (APR), fees or term make repayment more expensive.
| Comparison point | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Amount offered | Does the net money delivered cover the intended expense after any fees? |
| APR | What is the annualized borrowing cost for this offer, and is it fixed for the full term? |
| Fees | Are there origination, late-payment, returned-payment or prepayment charges? |
| Monthly payment | Does the required payment fit your budget with a meaningful emergency buffer? |
| Term and total repayment | How much will you repay in total, and how does that change if the term is longer? |
| Eligibility and use | Is the product available in your state, and does the lender allow your intended purpose? |
Compare offers using the same principal and, where possible, the same repayment horizon. Looking only at the monthly payment can hide a higher APR or a longer period of interest charges.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a longer term changes the borrowing decision
Discover’s published example lists terms from 36 to 84 months, while SoFi lists terms from two through 10 years for eligible borrowers. A longer term spreads repayment over more months, which can make a payment easier to fit into a budget. The trade-off is that interest may accumulate for longer, and the debt remains outstanding further into the future.
Use the payment and total-repayment figures from the specific offer rather than assuming that every lender calculates them the same way. If two offers have similar payments but different terms, the shorter one may cost less overall; verify the numbers in the disclosures.

Eligibility, state availability and permitted uses
An advertised range may apply only to eligible applicants and particular states. Check the lender’s state list and eligibility disclosures before relying on a maximum. Lenders can also restrict uses such as education, business expenses, investments or secured transactions, depending on the product. Your intended use should be disclosed accurately and should comply with the agreement.
Prequalification, when offered, may show an estimated rate or amount using a soft inquiry, but the final decision can change after a full application, verification and a hard credit inquiry. Read the lender’s explanation of the inquiry and approval process before submitting multiple applications.
Do not apply a mortgage underwriting rule to personal loans
The federal ability-to-repay rule discussed in the cited Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Regulation Z material applies to covered transactions secured by a dwelling. It identifies factors such as income or assets, current debt obligations, monthly DTI or residual income and credit history, and its official interpretation says it does not prescribe a particular DTI threshold or minimum credit score.
That is mortgage regulation, not a federal personal-loan underwriting formula. It should not be used to claim that every personal-loan lender must accept a specific DTI or score, or that it guarantees a borrowing amount.
A practical application sequence
- Define the need and net amount. Price the expense and account for any fee deducted from proceeds.
- Review your credit reports and budget. Correct errors before applying and calculate the payment you can sustain.
- Check product rules. Confirm state availability, minimum and maximum amounts, permitted use, terms and fee disclosures.
- Seek comparable quotes. Record APR, payment, term, total repayment, fees and whether the quote is conditional.
- Submit documentation accurately. Be prepared to verify income, employment and identity. Do not inflate income or omit debts.
- Read the final agreement. Confirm the approved principal, net proceeds, payment schedule, due date, late-fee policy and cancellation rights before accepting.
Common mistakes that reduce usefulness of a personal loan
- Anchoring on the maximum: A $100,000 product ceiling is not a recommendation to borrow $100,000.
- Using income as a shortcut: Income without debt, credit and employment context cannot predict an offer.
- Choosing by payment alone: A low payment can result from a longer term and higher total interest.
- Ignoring net proceeds: An origination fee can leave you with less cash than the stated principal.
- Applying repeatedly without a plan: Multiple hard inquiries and unaffordable applications can complicate your borrowing profile.
- Skipping the emergency buffer: A payment that works only in a perfect month is not affordable.
Bottom-line decision rule
Start with the amount you need, then verify that the lender’s range includes it. Treat the lender’s underwriting decision as separate from your own affordability test. The right personal-loan amount is the smallest offer that covers the legitimate expense at an APR, fee structure, term and monthly payment you can sustain—not the largest number in an advertisement.
