There is no dependable universal cash value for 1,000 pop tabs. What you could receive depends on their actual weight, whether a local scrap buyer accepts loose tabs, and the rate it currently pays. A charity collection is different: check the specific organization’s current rules and how it uses proceeds rather than assuming each tab has a set donation value.
Why 1,000 tabs do not have a fixed dollar value
Scrap buyers generally need the weight and material they can accept—not a standard cash value for a particular number of tabs. A buyer’s current rate, its rules for loose tabs, and the weight of your batch all affect the result. Without a local quote and a measured weight, an exact dollar amount would be guesswork.
A March 30, 2012 report from Hay Springs Public School says a fourth-grade class estimated approximately 1,000 pop tabs per pound for a school contest. That is a dated, local estimate, not a standardized conversion. Your own batch may weigh more or less, so weigh it rather than treating the count as a guaranteed pound.
What published dollar estimates do—and do not—tell you
A May 22, 2025 article by John Elmore at TheTechyLife gives conflicting estimates: one section states $0.40–$0.50 per pound and assumes 1,000 tabs weigh 1–2 pounds, while another says 1,000 tabs average around $0.30–$0.50. The article does not provide an authoritative source for a current scrap rate, and its figures do not establish what a buyer near you will pay. They should not be treated as a reliable quote.

How to find out what your tabs are worth locally
- Weigh the tabs. Use a household scale or ask a local scrap buyer whether it can weigh them. Keep the measured weight separate from any estimate based on tab count.
- Contact nearby scrap buyers. Ask whether they accept loose aluminum pop tabs, whether there is a minimum quantity, and what rate they currently pay. Confirm whether the rate applies to tabs on their own or only to an accepted load of other scrap.
- Ask how the sale is calculated. Confirm the unit used for the rate and whether the buyer will weigh your batch before quoting a payment. A count-based estimate is not a substitute for the buyer’s scale and current terms.
- If you are collecting for charity, contact that organization or its local chapter directly. Verify whether it currently accepts tabs, how it wants them delivered, and whether proceeds support a stated program. Do not assume a charity collection pays a fixed amount per tab.
Scrap sale or charity collection?
A scrap sale is a transaction with a local buyer, so acceptance rules, weight, and the current rate determine any payment. A charity collection depends on the particular organization’s program and instructions; its purpose may be supporting fundraising rather than giving donors a set cash return. Check the relevant buyer or organization before spending time collecting or transporting a large batch.

Bulk tabs are also sold as craft material for projects such as jewelry, ornaments, or classroom activities. That is a separate use: buying tabs for crafts is not an economical way to earn scrap proceeds.
