No verifiable source gives a comparable whiskey bottle price for all 50 states, so no reliable 50-state price ranking exists yet. What is available is state spirits-tax data, a few dated official price lists for individual products, and an explanation of why those numbers cannot be read as what a bottle costs in your state. This article explains what each one measures and how to build a fair comparison for your own purchases.
Why a 50-state whiskey price ranking does not exist yet
“Whiskey” is not one product. A bottle’s price depends on its style (Irish, bourbon, Scotch, rye, Canadian), its brand and expression, its size, its proof, and whether the figure is a shelf price, a pre-tax price, or a final checkout total. A ranking that mixes these produces numbers that look precise but do not describe the same thing.
The sources that publish state-level alcohol figures also measure different things. Tax comparisons describe rates on a reference bottle. Official price lists describe specific products on a specific date in one state. The sources reviewed do not include a multi-state retail series that uses the same product, size, date, and method in every state. That is why this article does not publish a state-by-state price table.
What the state tax comparison measures
The Tax Foundation’s 2026 comparison, “Distilled Spirits Taxes by State, 2026,” ranks state taxes on distilled spirits. Its reference product is a 750 mL bottle of 40% alcohol-by-volume (ABV) spirits sold off-premises. The underlying state excise rates are stated as of January 1, 2025, in the organization’s Facts & Figures 2025 (Table 27). The figures are therefore tax rates on a reference bottle, dated January 1, 2025, rather than retail prices observed in 2026.

The same source states that “The various taxes combine to account for about half of the price of a typical bottle of spirits.” This is a broad estimate about spirits in general. It is not a measured whiskey price, and it does not give a tax share for any individual state.
Why control states complicate tax comparisons
In control states, the state itself controls how spirits are sold, and the price a consumer pays can include a government markup on top of, or in place of, an ordinary excise tax. The Tax Foundation represents these states using implied excise rates that reflect that markup, so their figures are not directly comparable with states that levy only an excise tax.

The practical consequence is that a low tax figure does not mean a low shelf price, and a high figure does not mean a high one. Retail margins, local sales taxes, and store pricing also differ from state to state. The sources reviewed do not quantify how much each factor moves the price of a whiskey bottle in any given state.
What a dated state price list shows
Some states publish official retail price lists. The Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Services’ March 2026 Category Retail Price List, effective March 1, 2026, shows a current retail price of $29.99 for a 750 mL bottle of Jameson Irish Whiskey and $29.99 for a 750 mL bottle of Bushmills Irish Whiskey.

These are two specific Utah products on one dated list. They do not represent Utah’s average whiskey price, and they say nothing about any other state. Utah also publishes monthly price books; its index shows October 2026 price books as of this writing, so the list in effect should be checked before any figure is quoted.
How to compare whiskey prices fairly
A fair comparison holds the product constant and records the conditions around it. Use the following fields for every price you collect.

What a bottle costs per drink
Price per bottle is less useful for a budget than price per serving. A 750 mL bottle at 40% ABV contains 300 mL of pure alcohol. A US standard drink contains 14 grams of ethanol, about 17.7 mL, so the bottle holds roughly 17 standard drinks.
Using the Utah list price of $29.99 as an example, that works out to about $1.75 per standard drink before mixers, ice, or any sales tax beyond what the list price includes. This is arithmetic on one product in one state, not a figure for whiskey in general.

How to check the price in your own state
- Find out whether your state sells spirits through a state system. If it does, locate the state agency’s current price list and note its effective date.
- If your state licenses private retailers, check the shelf price of the same product, in the same size, at two or three stores.
- Record the total you would pay at checkout, including sales tax, and note any discount that applies.
- Write down the date you checked. A list effective in March may not match prices in October.
- If a product is not sold in your state, record that it is unavailable instead of substituting a different bottle.
Repeating these steps for each product you buy gives you a reliable local price history, which is more useful for budgeting than any national ranking.
