Re:

How Moving to Another State Affects Your Social Security Benefits and Taxes

A state move does not itself change the federal Social Security benefit formula, but address reporting, SSI circumstances, and state taxes deserve a year-specific check.

Moving to another state does not, by itself, change the federal formula used to calculate your Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability benefit. You may need to update your address with the Social Security Administration (SSA), however, and a move can affect state taxes or, in some cases, Supplemental Security Income (SSI). If you are asking, “Will moving to another state affect my Social Security benefits?” or “Will my new state tax my Social Security?”, the answer depends on the type of benefit you receive, your income and filing circumstances, and the destination state’s rules for the year you move.

What changes—and what does not—when you move?

For Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability benefits, crossing a state line does not itself recalculate your federal benefit. A move is not a change to the federal benefit formula. You should still make sure SSA has your correct mailing address, and your state income-tax treatment may change because each state has its own rules.

SSI needs separate attention. SSI is a needs-based program, and an individual’s living arrangements and any state supplement can matter to the case. Do not assume that every SSI recipient’s payment will be identical after a move. Report the move using the instructions for your case and ask SSA whether your new living arrangement or destination affects your payment.

There can also be an annual Social Security cost-of-living adjustment unrelated to where you live. SSA announced a 2.8% adjustment for 2026; that annual adjustment is not an increase caused by moving.

Do you need to tell Social Security that you moved?

It depends on whether you receive a benefit or are enrolled in Medicare. SSA says people receiving retirement, survivors, or disability benefits and people enrolled in Medicare can update a U.S. mailing address through my Social Security. The account also allows eligible users to change direct deposit information and choose when an address or deposit change takes effect.

If you receive retirement, survivors, or disability benefits

  1. Sign in to your my Social Security account.
  2. Open the profile or personal-information area and use the address-change option to enter your new U.S. mailing address. You can also update direct deposit information there if needed.
  3. Choose the effective date when prompted, then review the information and submit the change. Keep a record of the confirmation and check that the new address appears correctly.

If you cannot use the online service, contact SSA for help. A postal forwarding request does not update your SSA record, so do not rely on mail forwarding as a substitute.

If you receive SSI

SSA’s standard online address-change service is not currently available to SSI recipients. Call SSA or contact a local Social Security office to report your move and confirm what information they need. SSA’s FAQ says SSI recipients can use the My Profile tab to check their address and payment method and update their phone number; that is not the same as changing an address through the standard online address-change service.

Use the reporting instructions for your particular SSI case. SSA’s general change guidance lists moving to a new home and changing a mailing address as changes to report and says to report changes by the 10th day of the month after they happen. Follow any benefit-specific instructions as well, particularly for SSI.

If you do not receive benefits, SSI, or Medicare

SSA says people who receive no Social Security benefits, SSI, or Medicare do not need to change their address with SSA. That does not change the need to update your address with other agencies, financial institutions, insurers, or the postal service as appropriate.

Can a move change your monthly payment?

For retirement, survivors, and disability benefits, the move itself does not change the federal calculation. But that does not establish that every beneficiary will see exactly the same deposit after relocating: the deposit date, direct-deposit details, or other case-specific matters may differ, and a separate annual adjustment can occur.

SSI is more sensitive to individual circumstances. Living arrangements and state supplements may affect an SSI case, so a recipient should confirm the effect of a move directly with SSA and check whether the destination state has a supplement and what rules apply. The general address guidance does not calculate an individual’s SSI payment or determine eligibility after a change in living arrangements.

How are Social Security benefits treated on your federal tax return?

Federal taxation depends on income and filing circumstances, not simply on the state where you live. For tax year 2025—the return generally filed in 2026—IRS Publication 915 uses a combined-income calculation. In plain English, add half of your Social Security benefits to your other income, including tax-exempt interest, and compare that figure with the applicable base amount.

Tax year 2025 amounts

Filing circumstance Base amount Higher combined-income threshold
Most unmarried filers $25,000 Over $34,000
Married filing jointly $32,000 Over $44,000
Married filing separately and lived with spouse at any time in 2025 $0 Special rules apply; consult Publication 915 for the calculation.

For most unmarried filers, a combined-income amount above the $25,000 base can mean that up to 50% of benefits may be included in taxable income. At higher combined-income levels—over $34,000 for most unmarried filers or $44,000 for joint filers—up to 85% may be included. These percentages describe the portion of benefits that may be taxable, not the tax rate. They also do not mean every person over a threshold owes tax on exactly that percentage. The actual calculation depends on the return’s full circumstances, and married filing separately has special treatment.

Keep the tax year attached to these figures: they are for 2025, not a timeless set of thresholds. Use the IRS publication for the tax year of the return you are preparing. Moving to a state that exempts benefits from its own income tax does not erase federal tax rules.

Will your new state tax Social Security?

State treatment varies. A 2026 summary from the Connecticut General Assembly Office of Legislative Research reports that 33 states fully exempt Social Security benefits from state income tax, seven allow a limited exemption, one provides no exemption, and nine states do not impose a broad-based income tax. The limited exemptions have their own eligibility rules. These counts are a high-level snapshot, not a substitute for checking the law that applies to your state and tax year.

A full exemption means the state does not tax Social Security benefits under its rules; it does not necessarily mean the state has no income tax or that all of your retirement income is exempt. A limited exemption may depend on income, age, filing status, or other criteria. A state with no broad-based income tax is a different case from a state that has an income tax but exempts Social Security.

Before moving, check the destination state’s tax authority guidance for the year your residency changes. Verify whether the state begins with federally taxable benefits, what exemption or subtraction applies, and whether you meet its conditions. The 2026 state count should not be read as a promise about a future year or a personal tax result.

How to compare the tax impact of two states

A state headline such as “Social Security is exempt” is only one part of a move-year comparison. The answer depends on residency dates, income besides benefits, filing status, and each state’s return rules. Use the same assumptions in both scenarios so that you are comparing the move rather than unrelated changes in income or deductions.

  1. Identify the tax year. Use the rules for the year you will file, not an older state summary. If the move occurs during the year, determine which state’s rules apply to each period.
  2. Establish residency dates. Find out when you become a resident under the old state’s and new state’s rules. A move date on a lease or calendar may not, on its own, settle the tax residency question.
  3. Check whether each state has a broad-based individual income tax. Do not confuse the absence of such a tax with an exemption from a tax that does exist.
  4. Read the Social Security provision closely. Determine whether benefits are fully exempt, partly exempt, or not exempt, and note any income, age, filing-status, or other eligibility limits.
  5. Include all relevant income and filing obligations. Other taxable income, deductions, and move-year filing requirements can affect the outcome; the treatment of benefits alone cannot establish the total tax difference.
  6. Compare the complete move-year result. Consider both states’ applicable returns and rules for the actual residency dates. If the answer is unclear, consult the state tax authority or a qualified tax professional about your circumstances.

There is no universal amount saved by moving. A state exemption may reduce state tax on benefits, but the overall result depends on the person’s income, deductions, filing status, residency timing, and other taxes. A reliable comparison requires those details and the rules for the actual tax year.

Move checklist: address, benefit, and tax steps

  • Update your mailing address with SSA if you receive retirement, survivors, or disability benefits or have Medicare; use the SSI-specific phone or local-office route if you receive SSI.
  • Review your direct-deposit information and effective date if your bank details are also changing.
  • Report an SSI move under your case’s instructions, and ask about living-arrangement effects or a state supplement.
  • Record the date your residency changes and retain documents that help establish it.
  • Check both states’ guidance for the tax year of the move, including benefit exemptions, eligibility limits, and part-year filing requirements.
  • Use the IRS guidance for the specific federal return year; do not carry the 2025 thresholds forward without checking.
