Why Moana 2 was not originally planned as a theatrical film
When Disney first developed Moana 2, it was scheduled as a series. At its February 7, 2024 announcement, Disney’s D23 account said early footage impressed Bob Iger and the company’s leadership team, who then chose a theatrical release. The Associated Press likewise described the project as originally planned as a television series.

That distinction matters: the available accounts describe a change in format, not a film that was already announced for a specific streaming debut and then moved to theaters. Disney announced the theatrical plan and its U.S. release date on February 7, 2024. D23’s announcement and the Associated Press report describe the original plan and change.
The theatrical release and reported box-office milestone
Disney listed November 27, 2024, as the U.S. theatrical opening date. The film follows Moana after her wayfinding ancestors call her to journey into dangerous, long-lost waters. David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller directed it, according to Disney’s film page.

In a 2025 corporate update, Disney said Moana 2 had surpassed $1 billion worldwide and ranked as the third-highest-grossing Walt Disney Animation Studios release at the time. Disney also said it had the biggest Thanksgiving weekend opening ever and the highest opening in the studio’s history. The announcement did not provide dollar figures for those opening records or a detailed final worldwide total, so the $1 billion threshold should not be treated as an exact gross. What can—and cannot—be concluded about the strategy
The reported sequence is clear: a project planned as a series became a theatrical feature, opened in U.S. theaters on November 27, 2024, and later crossed Disney’s reported $1 billion worldwide threshold. Disney attributed the format change to leadership’s reaction to early footage. Those facts do not establish that the theatrical switch alone caused the box-office result; the cited announcements do not provide a causal analysis.
