The project is still being evaluated: the reported tonnage and grade are a conceptual exploration target, not a proven reserve or a defined mineral resource, and the available reports do not establish a U.S. purchase or supply commitment.
What was reported in Botswana?
The project is Gcwihaba, near Shakawe in north-west Botswana, where Tsodilo Resources is evaluating mineral deposits. Botswana’s DailyNews reported on 18 May 2026 that the mineralization was reported at a depth of 20–50 metres and includes 15 rare earth elements, along with copper, cobalt, nickel, vanadium, and silver. The reports do not provide a complete list of the 15 individual rare earth elements. They describe elements present in mineralization; they do not establish that each one can be recovered economically. “Rare earth elements” is the more precise term here than “rare earth metals.”
What do the tonnage and grade figures mean?
Tsodilo’s October 2025 presentation gives a conceptual exploration target of 81–97 million tonnes at 0.05%–1.5% total rare earth oxides. Those figures are an exploration target, not a proven reserve or a formally defined mineral resource. A conceptual target is an early-stage estimate of the potential scale and grade of mineralization. It does not show how much material can ultimately be mined, what proportion can be processed into saleable products, or whether a mine would make money. Those conclusions require further exploration and technical, economic, and environmental work.
Why the project is not yet a mine
A Botswana Press Agency report published by DailyNews on 15 May 2026 describes ongoing work to determine whether the deposits can be explored and mined profitably while managing environmental risk, as well as how to process the material efficiently. Tsodilo geologist Mary Toteng said the partnership aims to investigate those questions. DailyNews

The reported partners are the University of Cape Town, Botswana Institute for Technology Research and Innovation, and Botswana Geoscience Institute. The reports characterize the work as evaluation, not commercial production. A finding of mineralization is only one step: processing performance, recoveries, costs, environmental controls, infrastructure, and financing all matter to whether a deposit can become a viable operation.

No U.S. purchase, offtake agreement, government financing, or other commitment to Gcwihaba is established in the available project reporting. Broader U.S. interest in diversifying rare earth supply chains is context, not evidence that this specific project will supply the United States. Reuters

For a project to become a dependable source of material, exploration would need to advance toward a viable mine, and the supply chain would need suitable processing and refining capacity and buyers. The reported discovery does not by itself demonstrate any of those outcomes.

What to watch as the project develops
- Resource definition: Whether follow-up work replaces the conceptual target with a formally defined mineral resource.
- Economic extraction: Whether studies establish recoveries, costs, environmental management, and a viable mining plan.
- Processing and sales: Whether processing and refining routes are demonstrated and actual buyers or offtake agreements are identified.
- U.S. involvement: Whether a specific financing, purchase, or partnership commitment is publicly documented, rather than inferred from general supply-chain policy.
