But Milkmaid is a Nestlé brand, while sweetened condensed milk is the broader product category. Its place in everyday speech grew through a long shift: from imported milk-preserving product to locally made pantry staple, and eventually to a familiar shortcut for desserts. That cultural shorthand is widely reported, but available sources do not establish how often Indians use the brand name generically or measure its market share.
From a European milk-preserving product to a global brand
The story begins in 1866, when brothers Charles and George Page established the Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company. Nestlé’s corporate history says the company sold condensed milk under the Milkmaid brand as a long-life alternative to fresh milk. Anglo-Swiss merged with Nestlé in 1905, bringing the brand into the company that would later trade it in India. Nestlé’s corporate timeline
Scroll’s 2022 historical feature reports that 374,000 cartons were sold in Britain and its colonies in 1868. That is a historical sales figure for those markets, not an estimate of Indian sales. Scroll’s account of Milkmaid in India
How Milkmaid arrived in India
Trading began with imported products
Nestlé says it began trading in India in 1912 by importing finished products, and identifies MILKMAID as the first brand it traded there. The company’s account establishes the brand’s early presence, but does not mean Milkmaid was initially made in India. Nestlé India’s company overview Nestlé India’s MILKMAID brand page

Colonial supply conditions shaped early use
Scroll places condensed milk within a period when reliable fresh-milk supplies could be a challenge in Indian cities, and describes tins serving shipboard needs and European residents before wider local uptake. Its account also discusses concerns about urban milk quality and the product’s long shelf life. These are historical explanations of the setting and evolving use, not a claim that every household had the same experience or adopted the product at the same time.
Scroll also describes advertising directed at families and children as part of the brand’s move into Indian homes. The product’s shelf stability and promotion helped introduce it, but the later change in how households used it would be just as important.
Local production—and two dates for Moga
Nestlé India dates the opening of its first Indian factory in Moga, Punjab, to 1961. Scroll, by contrast, reports that the manufacturing unit there opened in 1962. The dates refer to the sources’ respective accounts; neither should be silently substituted for the other. Nestlé India’s company overview Scroll’s historical feature

From milk substitute to dessert shortcut
Changing milk supply changed the product’s role
As milk availability expanded, Scroll says, Milkmaid’s role shifted from milk substitute or creamer toward dessert-making. Instead of being valued chiefly as a way to keep milk on hand, it became a convenient ingredient that could add sweetness and richness to home sweets.
Recipes and demonstrations made the new use practical
Scroll describes recipes printed on packaging, sampling and demonstrations as ways the company encouraged dessert use from the 1980s onward. A Milkmaid cookbook followed in the late 1990s, according to the feature. These efforts connected the product to specific kitchen tasks and helped make it familiar beyond its earlier milk-replacement role.

Several changes reinforce one another in this story: an imported brand arrived early in Nestlé’s Indian trade; the company later produced condensed milk locally; advertising brought the product into household awareness; and recipes made it useful in a recurring, memorable setting—dessert preparation. Repeated use and nostalgia may help explain why people say “Milkmaid” when they mean condensed milk, but those factors are explanations, not measured findings about national speech.

Milkmaid was not the only condensed-milk brand
Scroll reports that Amul’s Mithai Mate arrived in the 1990s and ended what it calls Milkmaid’s “near monopoly.” That phrase characterizes the brand’s position in the feature; it is not accompanied by a market-share measurement. The available sources do not establish a reliable Indian market-share percentage, nationally representative brand-recognition result, or measured rate of generic use.
So Milkmaid’s “byword” status is best understood as a cultural description: a brand name strongly associated with a product category in reported household experience. It should not be mistaken for proof that the name formally replaced the category or that all Indian consumers use it that way.
