Mike Ashley influenced Doug King’s Coventry City takeover through the stadium, not the sale of the football club. King bought an 85% stake in Coventry City, while Ashley’s Frasers Group acquired the CBS Arena in a separate transaction. That left King’s new club as a tenant of a landlord he had hoped to outbid.
What changed hands in Coventry?
In November 2022, Doug King agreed to buy Coventry City from SISU and also made a late £25 million bid for the CBS Arena. The club sale and the stadium sale were separate deals.
After the Arena operating companies went into administration, Frasers Group’s reported £17 million deal for the ground proceeded. BBC Sport reported that the deal included a £1.2 million exclusivity payment intended to help keep the Arena open. These are reported figures for the transactions, not evidence of a general valuation or a direct offer comparison. The BBC also reported that King had to get into an administration meeting he had not been invited to. BBC Sport’s January 2023 account describes the stadium-sale context.
The EFL approved King under its owners’ and directors’ test on 10 January 2023. He completed the purchase of 85% of the club, with SISU retaining 15% at that stage. Coventry said the transaction would clear the club’s debts. BBC Sport and The Guardian’s report on the approval document the takeover.

Why did the stadium deal matter to King?
Coventry played at the Arena as a tenant, so buying the club did not give King ownership of its ground. In January 2023, he said securing the club’s future there was his top priority. He had not met Ashley at that point, but had dealt with Frasers Group chief executive Michael Murray. King said: “We want a strong relationship with Frasers Group.” BBC Sport reported King’s comments and the tenancy context on 19 January 2023.
The practical consequence was a landlord relationship to establish as King took control of the club. Ashley’s influence was therefore significant to Coventry’s stadium position, but the available reporting does not show that he blocked King’s purchase of the football club: King completed that purchase, while his separate stadium bid did not proceed.

How do Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday fit in?
Derby County: a separate 2022 process
In June 2022, Ashley contacted Derby County’s administrators, Quantuma, after a preferred bidder missed a deadline. He said he “remains willing and ready to transact”, but also said he did not want to be treated as a contingency measure and required some form of security before possible talks resumed. That was a separate bid process months before the Coventry transactions; it does not establish a role in King’s Coventry takeover. The Guardian reported Ashley’s letter and conditions.
Sheffield Wednesday: later context
A BBC report published on 24 December 2025 listed Ashley among bidders in Sheffield Wednesday’s administration-era sale process. That is later context about his interest in distressed clubs, not a contemporaneous influence on Coventry’s January 2023 takeover. The report establishes that he was among the reported bidders at that time; it does not establish the eventual outcome. BBC Sport’s December 2025 report covers that process.

The distinction that explains Ashley’s role
- Club: King completed a purchase of 85% of Coventry City; SISU retained 15% at that stage.
- Stadium: Frasers Group acquired the CBS Arena in a separate deal after King’s late bid did not proceed.
- Immediate issue: Coventry was a tenant, making a stable relationship with its new landlord a priority for King.
- Other clubs: Ashley’s Derby interest was reported in 2022, while the Sheffield Wednesday bidder report appeared in December 2025. Neither makes Ashley the cause or controller of Coventry’s club sale.
