In March 2025, 900 Hyundai vehicles traveling from South Korea were unloaded at Salina Cruz, carried 308 km across Mexico by rail to Coatzacoalcos, then loaded onto another vessel bound for the United States. Oaxaca’s government reported that the rail crossing took nine hours. A separate report later described the wider ocean-to-ocean transfer as taking about 72 hours, but official state accounts do not establish that as a measured end-to-end transit time.
How did the 900 Hyundai vehicles cross Mexico?
The shipment used a ship–rail–ship route. The vessel Glovis Cosmo arrived at Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, from South Korea with 900 Hyundai vehicles. The cars were unloaded, moved across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec on rail, and transferred to another vessel at Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, for onward travel to the U.S. East Coast.
Oaxaca’s government reported the arrival and rail movement on March 29, 2025; Veracruz’s government reported on April 2 that the vessel Africa had arrived at Coatzacoalcos to load the 900 cars for export. Oaxaca government account · Veracruz government account.
What does “72 hours” mean?
The nine-hour figure is the reported time for the 308 km train journey between the two Mexican ports. It does not include the sea voyage from South Korea, unloading and loading, port waiting time, or onward travel to the U.S. East Coast.

The Daily Galaxy described the broader ocean-to-ocean movement as a roughly 72-hour benchmark in an April 2026 article. The official state reports confirm the shipment and the rail leg, but do not independently document the full trip as a measured 72-hour transit. What is the Interoceanic Corridor?
The Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec (CIIT) is a multimodal logistics platform, not a single railway or a canal. Its founding decree describes a network integrating the port administrations of Coatzacoalcos, Salina Cruz, Dos Bocas, and Puerto Chiapas, connected by rail and road. The 308 km Coatzacoalcos–Salina Cruz route is Line Z. Mexico’s Navy describes it as carrying freight and passengers since December 2023. For this vehicle shipment, the railway linked two ocean ports, with cargo transferred between ships and trains at either end. Navy description of the corridor.
Was the Panama Canal replaced?
No such conclusion follows from this shipment. A ship passing through the Panama Canal and cargo moving over the Mexican corridor are different operations: the latter requires unloading from one vessel, transferring by rail, and loading onto another. The nine-hour rail time alone cannot establish which route is faster or cheaper overall.

A fair comparison would need complete elapsed time and cost, including port handling and waiting, the train segment, onward vessel schedules, capacity, reliability, and cargo suitability. Yes. Veracruz’s government reported a second Hyundai Glovis crossing in July 2026, carrying 3,000 vehicles over the same 308 km Line Z route from Salina Cruz to Coatzacoalcos, with onward travel to the U.S. East Coast. That later, larger movement shows further use, but the announcement does not establish a regular service cadence or a repeatable 72-hour full-transit time. Veracruz’s July 2026 announcement.
