For 10 adults, buy 2.5 pounds of raw, boneless fish fillets for 4-ounce portions, or 3.75 pounds for 6-ounce portions. Those totals assume the portions are weighed before cooking; adjust for appetite, the rest of the meal, and whether the fish includes bones.
How much fish to buy for 10 people
| Raw portion per person | Raw fillets for 10 people | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| 4 ounces | 2.5 pounds | A typical adult portion |
| 6 ounces | 3.75 pounds | A more generous serving |
The U.S. FDA describes 4 ounces of fish, measured before cooking, as a typical adult serving—approximately the size and thickness of an adult palm. The 6-ounce option is a practical larger-portion estimate, not an official serving standard. FDA guidance is available in its Questions & Answers from the FDA/EPA Advice about Eating Fish.
How the estimate is calculated
Multiply the raw portion size by 10, then convert ounces to pounds: 10 × 4 ounces = 40 ounces, or 2.5 pounds; 10 × 6 ounces = 60 ounces, or 3.75 pounds.
Raw purchase weight and cooked serving weight are different. The USDA Food Buying Guide lists fresh or frozen fish fillets as yielding 0.70 pound cooked for each pound purchased. At that yield, 2.5 pounds of raw fillets produces about 1.75 pounds cooked. The guide was last updated August 4, 2025; see the USDA Food Buying Guide fish and shellfish yield table.

The guide also illustrates the conversion in the other direction: its example starts with a 6.375-pound cooked flounder target, divides by 0.70 to get 9.1 pounds to purchase, then rounds up to 10 pounds. That example is a yield calculation for its stated cooked target—not a recommendation to buy 10 pounds for a meal serving 10 people.

Appetite and portion size
Use the 4-ounce calculation for a typical serving and the 6-ounce calculation if you expect larger appetites or want a more substantial fish portion. If you want leftovers, decide how many additional portions you want and multiply that number by your chosen raw portion size.

Fillets versus whole or bone-in fish
The 70% cooked-yield figure applies to fresh or frozen fillets. Do not apply it automatically to whole or bone-in fish: the edible amount depends on the species, cut, and preparation. Ask the fishmonger for an edible-yield estimate for the specific fish you plan to buy.
The rest of the meal
If fish is served alongside another main dish or substantial sides, you may prefer the 4-ounce estimate. For a fish-centered meal, the larger portion or an additional portion may make more sense. These are meal-planning choices, not official nutrition standards.
