There was no single amount that every country could send. In March 2025, the U.S. sought additional egg supplies as avian-influenza-related shortages pushed prices higher, but potential exports depended on each country’s surplus, the type of egg product, and U.S. import and animal-health rules. The administration discussed a prospective 70 million to 100 million eggs; that estimate was not a count of completed deliveries.
What the U.S. asked for—and what the estimate meant
In March 2025, the U.S. contacted countries in Europe and elsewhere about supplying eggs during a domestic shortage. The Associated Press reported that countries approached included Germany, Italy, Poland, Sweden, Austria, Norway, Spain and Denmark. USDA said it had secured new commitments from South Korea and Turkey, but the report did not specify their volumes or whether they were shell eggs or processed products. AP’s March 28, 2025 report described the talks and the limits facing potential suppliers.
A separate AP report in March 2025 attributed an estimate of about 70 million to 100 million eggs to Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins. It was a prospective estimate associated with import talks, not a verified final shipment total. The sources cited here do not establish how many eggs ultimately arrived under the commitments. AP’s report on the administration’s bird-flu plan and the estimate provides the contemporaneous context.
Why countries could not simply send their full output
A country’s production is not the same as its exportable surplus. Potential suppliers had domestic demand and their own supply constraints, so a request from Washington did not mean a large quantity was available to ship.

Germany had limited room to spare
AP reported that Germany’s domestic poultry industry generated about 73% of the eggs consumed in the country, and that Germany imported eggs from the Netherlands to meet demand. German Egg Association representative Goldnick told AP that “and we ourselves essentially have to import eggs from Holland every day to keep everyone satisfied,”. The same report quoted him estimating that German farms could collect around 45 million eggs per day, compared with an estimated U.S. shortage of around 50 million eggs per day. Those figures are his comparison as reported by AP, not a harmonized official measure of exportable supply and U.S. shortage.
Other European suppliers also faced constraints
AP described Italy’s producers as having little or no surplus. Poland’s industry association said shell-egg volumes would be limited, while larger amounts of processed egg products might be possible if the U.S. certified Poland as a source. The report also said Germany relied on imports to meet domestic demand. These examples show why production totals alone could not answer how much a country could send.

Animal-health restrictions could narrow the options
AP said Newcastle disease in parts of Brazil impeded the country’s ability to become a significant supplier. It also reported that Brazil’s February 2025 shipments to the U.S. were up 93% year over year, attributing that figure to the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein. The shipment increase and the disease-related constraint are time-specific details from the March 2025 report; they do not establish Brazil’s current disease status or present eligibility.
Shell eggs and processed egg products follow different routes
“Eggs” can mean shell eggs for direct use, eggs intended for breaking and processing, or processed products such as liquid or dried egg. These categories are not interchangeable for import purposes.

- Table or shell eggs: USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service says prospective importers should contact APHIS to determine whether a country is eligible. Foreign producers may also need to meet FDA Egg Rule requirements, U.S. importers may have Foreign Supplier Verification Program (FSVP) obligations, and an advance import request form is part of the process. - Processed egg products: USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service describes a separate pathway based on an equivalent foreign inspection system and eligible establishments. Animal-health requirements or restrictions may apply as well. See FSIS guidance on sourcing egg products and shell eggs from foreign countries.
A country being contacted, or even offering a potential volume, does not by itself show that a particular product, establishment or shipment has met the applicable requirements. Importers should confirm current USDA, APHIS and FDA rules before treating a proposed shipment as eligible.

The March 2025 reports document requests, discussions, commitments and a prospective administration estimate. They do not provide a final audited total of eggs imported under those commitments, a complete country-by-country shipment ledger, or an isolated estimate of the effect on retail prices. An announced commitment should therefore not be described as a completed delivery, and the prospective estimate should not be treated as proof that imports lowered prices.
