Has Apple disclosed how many people subscribe to News+?
No paid Apple News+ subscriber total or direct subscriber-growth measure appears in Apple’s January 12, 2026 services update. The update describes the service and its features, but it does not say how many people pay for News+ or whether that number increased. Apple’s update therefore cannot substantiate the claim that more people are subscribing.

Apple executive Eddy Cue described 2025 as a record-breaking year for Apple services overall, citing growth, global expansion and innovation. That broad statement does not identify News+ as a growth driver or provide a News+-specific subscriber figure.

Why the 17% figure does not answer the subscription question
A reported 17% increase concerns Apple News readership, not paid Apple News+ subscriptions. The Information’s report uses a different measure: readership does not establish how many people pay for the premium service, and the figure should not be presented as News+ subscriber growth.

The distinction matters because people can use Apple News without subscribing to News+. A readership figure can describe engagement with the broader news app, but it cannot be converted into a paid-subscriber total.
What Apple has said about the service
Apple says News+ offers more than 600 titles. Its product announcements show the service has continued to develop, but do not report whether those changes brought in more subscribers.

Food and puzzles
Apple announced News+ Food in 2025, with 100,000 recipes from 60 publications. The offering was described for the U.S., UK, Australia and English-speaking Canada. Apple also introduced Emoji Game in the U.S. and Canada. These are catalog and feature details, not measures of paid subscriptions.
What the catalog says—and does not say
A large selection and new features may make News+ more useful to some readers. They do not reveal how many people subscribe, whether the subscriber base is changing, or how much growth any feature generated. Apple’s January 2026 update does not connect these additions to a subscriber count.

How people can access News+ without a standalone subscription
News+ access can come through routes other than an individual subscription, which makes the phrase “how many people pay” especially important to define. Apple One Premier includes News+ in the U.S., Canada, Australia and the UK. Apple’s Apple One page describes the bundle; access through it does not, by itself, show how many people would otherwise buy News+ separately.
Apple also says a News+ subscriber can share access with up to five other family members. Those family members may use the service without each holding a separate News+ subscription. Apple Support notes that News+, Apple News, Apple One and puzzles are not available in every country or region. Apple’s availability and sharing guidance has the current details.

What can be concluded about News+ growth?
The public information covered here establishes that Apple offers a service with more than 600 titles, added features in 2025 and provides access through Apple One Premier in four named markets. It does not establish a paid News+ subscriber count or a subscriber trend. The title’s assertion that the number is growing remains unverified; that is not the same as evidence that subscriptions are not growing.

A reliable answer would require a News+-specific paid subscriber disclosure from Apple or a credible independent measurement that clearly defines what it counts. Until such evidence is available, readership, catalog size, bundle availability and general Apple services performance should not be treated as substitutes for that number.
