What Lockheed Martin proposed
Lockheed Martin CEO James Taiclet described “21st Century Security” as an open architecture, an Internet of Things (IoT) environment, or a set of standards that could let defense contractors connect their products through a 5G-enabled system. The intended result was to link assets across domains—including aircraft, ships, satellites, submarines and ground systems—and improve mission capability over time. Taiclet stated a goal of increasing capability every six to twelve months; the report presents that as an aspiration, not an achieved upgrade cycle. EE Times, May 13, 2022.
The approach depended on more than connecting devices. Its stated requirements included cross-domain interoperability, secure and spoof-resistant computing, fast data movement between sensors and command-and-control or fire-control systems, and a supply chain able to provide the necessary components. The report did not give test results or performance measures for the proposed architecture.
What roles Intel, Nvidia and the other named companies had
EE Times reported that Lockheed had about ten commercial industry partners, all U.S. companies, and that three or four had been publicly announced at the time. It named these roles:

These are partner roles reported in 2022, not confirmation of current agreements or a comparison of the companies’ products. The article did not identify a specific chip, cloud service, simulation system or technical standard.
How the F-35 and Patriot example was supposed to work
Taiclet illustrated the concept with a low-altitude cruise-missile threat. In his scenario, an F-35 detects the missile with its sensors and shares information over a network so a Patriot battery can develop a targeting solution. He also described the possibility of linking a German Patriot battery with an American F-35. These were examples of what the architecture might enable; the report does not establish that this exact end-to-end capability had been deployed, tested successfully or used by NATO. What the proposed hypersonic-defense chain involved
The report described a possible sequence for responding to a hypersonic missile. It said the article characterized such missiles as traveling at 1 to 5 miles per second; that range is the report’s figure, not an independently verified technical definition. The proposed chain was:
- Satellites sense a launch early.
- Artificial intelligence calculates and predicts the missile’s path.
- High-speed connections move data to command-and-control and fire-control centers.
- Network links share information with a defensive missile battery, such as THAAD or Patriot.
EE Times supplied no results for this scenario, including detection accuracy, prediction accuracy, network latency or fielding status. The sequence describes a proposed system, not demonstrated performance.

Why the report also discussed production and supply chains
Connecting defense systems was only part of the story. EE Times linked the strategy to supply-chain resilience and manufacturing capacity, using Javelin production as an example of the pressures on defense manufacturing. All figures below are historical statements reported in 2022, not current production or inventory measurements.

The figures help explain why the article connected system integration to manufacturing capacity: a networked architecture still depends on having the chips and other components needed to build and sustain its equipment. They do not show that Lockheed’s proposed architecture itself resolved supply constraints. EE Times, May 13, 2022.

What the 2022 report does—and does not—establish
The report documents Lockheed Martin’s stated concept, the partner roles it named at the time, and scenarios Taiclet used to explain how connected systems might work. It does not establish the architecture’s present implementation status, whether the named partnerships remain in effect, or whether the F-35/Patriot and hypersonic-defense chains achieved operational capability. Treat the examples as proposed uses rather than proof of deployed systems.
