Last Epoch began as an after-hours project that game director Judd Cobler said he started on Reddit. The community-origin story helped lead to a Kickstarter campaign and a commercial action RPG; the sales milestone in the original headline is now out of date. GamesBeat reported more than 2.5 million copies sold in 2025, while KRAFTON Japan announced that worldwide cumulative sales had exceeded 3 million units on October 2, 2026.
How did Last Epoch start?
Judd Cobler, Last Epoch’s game director and Eleventh Hour Games’ CEO, described the project’s beginnings in a July 2023 post on Reddit: “LE was an after hours project that I started 6 years ago right here on Reddit.” He said the team spent evenings planning and creating a vertical slice—a small, representative portion of a game—to take to Kickstarter.

That account supports the shorthand that Last Epoch was “built by Redditors,” but with an important qualification: Cobler started the project on Reddit and brought community members into its early development. It does not establish that every developer who later worked on the released game came from Reddit.
From community project to a funded game
GamesBeat’s April 2025 retrospective reported that Cobler recruited people on Reddit and that the Kickstarter campaign raised $255,378 from 2,824 backers, exceeding its $210,000 goal. The figures are GamesBeat’s reporting on the campaign, not a current sales or audience measure.
#1 Best Overall
- A turn-Based Tactical RPG with the whole RPG package: a flurry of stats, skills, perks and traits plus tons of items—armor, weapons, trinkets and potions
- Think and adapt: you will face swarms of deadly enemies with only a few hardened heroes
- Roguelite Elements: the game is meant to be hard. You will fail…a lot. But every time you do, you’ll grow harder, better, faster and stronger
- Scale the difficulty to your liking, with 6 levels of Apocalypse to entertain even the hardest of hardcore players
- Rebuild the city to help you in-between fights. Get healed, forge new magical weapons, get new heroes. Spend your resources wisely, commander
In the same 2023 Reddit post, Cobler said the studio wanted to hear positive and critical feedback and hoped to deliver substantial updates every three to four months. That was the studio’s stated intention at the time, not evidence that every later update followed that schedule.
How many copies has Last Epoch sold?
The headline’s 2.5 million figure reflects an earlier milestone. GamesBeat reported that Last Epoch had sold more than 2.5 million copies in its article published April 17, 2025, and updated June 18, 2025. Later, KRAFTON Japan announced on October 2, 2026, that worldwide cumulative sales had exceeded 3 million units. These are milestones reported at different dates, not competing estimates of the same moment.
