How Jumbo CD Interest Is Taxed and Reported

Jumbo CD interest generally follows the same federal tax rules as other bank CD interest. Learn when it is taxable, how to report it, what the $10 and $1,500 thresholds mean, and how to handle missing forms or early-withdrawal penalties.

For U.S. federal income-tax purposes, interest from a jumbo certificate of deposit (CD) is generally taxed like interest from any other bank CD. The deposit’s size does not create a separate federal tax category, special exemption, or different reporting form. You generally include taxable interest when it is paid, credited to your account, and available for withdrawal under the CD’s terms—even if you leave the money in the account.

The exact timing can change when interest is deferred for more than a year, and an early-withdrawal penalty must be handled separately from the interest. This guide covers the federal rules, Forms 1099-INT and 1099-OID, Schedule B, missing forms, and the records you need. State and local taxes require separate rules for your state.

Does a jumbo CD receive special tax treatment?

No separate federal tax treatment for “jumbo” CDs is established in the IRS guidance on certificates of deposit. “Jumbo” describes a banking product with a large deposit; it does not, by itself, make the interest tax-free or change the return on which you report it. The same general rules that apply to bank-account and ordinary CD interest apply to a jumbo CD unless the contract includes features that materially change how interest is paid or deferred.

That conclusion applies to a CD held in a regular taxable account. A CD inside a tax-advantaged arrangement, or an investment that is legally different from a bank CD, can have different rules. Read the account agreement and the year-specific IRS instructions if the product includes unusual deferral, ownership, or retirement-account provisions.

When does CD interest become taxable?

IRS Publication 550 (2025) states: “In general, any interest that you receive or that is credited to your account and can be withdrawn is taxable income.” The key question is not whether you moved the money to your checking account. It is whether the interest was paid or credited and you could withdraw it under the contract without a substantial penalty.

Interest paid during the CD term

If the bank pays interest monthly, quarterly, or annually, the amounts generally belong in the federal tax year in which they are received or made available. A credit to the CD that you can withdraw under the account terms is generally treated the same way as a payment to you.

Interest paid at maturity

For a CD maturing within one year, or for interest paid at intervals of one year or less, the general rule is to include the interest when you receive it or become entitled to receive it without a substantial penalty. A one-year CD that pays all interest at maturity will commonly produce taxable interest in the year the CD matures and the interest is available, subject to the contract’s exact terms.

Leaving the money in the CD does not automatically defer tax

Rolling interest into the principal or renewing the CD does not by itself eliminate current taxation. If the interest was credited and available to withdraw, it can be taxable even when you did not take cash out. Review the bank’s annual statement and the CD agreement rather than relying on the fact that the funds stayed in the account.

When can deferred-interest rules apply?

A CD that defers interest for more than one year can raise original issue discount (OID) issues. OID rules can require annual income recognition before the CD’s final maturity payment. The ordinary “wait until cash arrives” assumption is therefore unsafe for a long-term or specially structured CD.

Questions to ask about a deferred CD

  • Does the contract defer every interest payment for more than one year?
  • Can you withdraw accrued interest before maturity, and would doing so cause a substantial penalty?
  • Did the bank issue Form 1099-INT, Form 1099-OID, or another year-end statement?
  • Does the statement show an amount that differs from the cash you actually received?

Use the bank’s tax statement and the current-year IRS instructions to determine whether OID reporting applies. If the contract is complex, obtain advice from a tax professional who can review the instrument itself; do not assume that a product marketed as a CD follows the simplest annual-interest pattern.

What forms will the bank send?

Banks, savings and loan associations, and other interest payers generally report interest on Form 1099-INT or, when applicable, Form 1099-OID. IRS Topic 403 says recipients generally should receive one of these forms when they receive at least $10 in interest and/or tax-exempt interest payments. The $10 amount is an information-reporting threshold for the payer, not a tax-free allowance for you.

Document or box What it generally means What to do
Form 1099-INT, box 1 Taxable interest, except amounts that belong in another box Include the taxable amount with your other taxable interest
Form 1099-INT, box 2 Early-withdrawal penalty reported by the payer, when applicable Do not subtract it from box 1; handle the penalty separately under the current return instructions
Form 1099-INT, box 3 Interest from U.S. savings bonds and Treasury obligations Follow the special reporting treatment for that category rather than treating it as ordinary CD interest
Form 1099-OID Interest or original issue discount reported under OID rules Use the OID amount and instructions for the applicable tax year

The form is a reporting statement, not the source of your tax obligation. You must report taxable interest even when the bank does not send a form, sends it late, or reports less than $10.

How to report jumbo CD interest on a federal return

  1. Collect the account records. Gather every Form 1099-INT and Form 1099-OID, the CD year-end statement, maturity and renewal notices, and records of any early withdrawal.
  2. Match each form to the correct tax year. The year printed on the form controls the initial reconciliation. Interest credited near year-end can require checking when it became available under the contract.
  3. Enter taxable interest. Put Form 1099-INT box 1 amounts with your other taxable interest on the federal return. If an OID form applies, follow the OID reporting instructions instead of duplicating the same amount as ordinary box 1 interest.
  4. Check whether Schedule B is required. IRS guidance generally requires Schedule B (Form 1040) when taxable interest exceeds $1,500. Schedule B is also generally required when you received interest as a nominee for the true owner. Verify the threshold and exceptions in the instructions for the return year you are filing.
  5. Report every taxable amount. Include interest below the bank’s $10 information-reporting threshold and any amount for which a statement is missing.
  6. Reconcile the final return. Compare the return’s interest total with your forms and account records. Resolve duplicates, corrected forms, and amounts assigned to a joint owner before filing.

What if the bank did not send Form 1099-INT?

The IRS instruction is explicit: “You must report all taxable and tax-exempt interest on your federal income tax return, even if you don’t receive a Form 1099-INT or Form 1099-OID.” A missing form does not remove the income.

Practical reconciliation steps

  • Check the bank’s secure-message center and tax-document area; many institutions deliver statements electronically.
  • Compare the CD ledger with the interest credited during the calendar year, including interest posted on maturity or renewal.
  • Ask the institution to confirm whether a form was issued, corrected, or mailed to a different address.
  • Report the amount supported by your records if the form remains unavailable, and retain those records with your tax file.
  • If a corrected form arrives after filing, follow the IRS procedure for correcting a return when the change affects tax.

Do not omit the interest because it is small, because the account automatically renewed, or because the bank’s document was delayed.

How is an early-withdrawal penalty treated?

When you redeem a CD before maturity, the bank may forfeit some interest or charge an early-withdrawal penalty. The interest and the penalty are separate tax items.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Report gross interest first

Report the total taxable interest shown on the applicable statement. Do not reduce that amount by the penalty and do not change Form 1099-INT box 1. If the bank reports the penalty, it generally appears in box 2.

Handle the penalty separately

IRS Publication 550 describes the early-withdrawal penalty as separately deductible under the applicable rules. The exact line and treatment can change with the return year, so use that year’s Form 1040 instructions. The deduction is not an offset that lets you report only the net cash you kept from the CD.

Example

Assume a bank reports $2,400 of taxable CD interest in box 1 and a $300 early-withdrawal penalty in box 2. Your federal reporting starts with $2,400 of interest. You then evaluate the $300 penalty under the current deduction instructions; you do not report $2,100 as interest.

When does Schedule B matter?

Schedule B is not a special form for jumbo CDs. It is an interest-and-dividends schedule that can be required because of the amount or ownership circumstances. IRS guidance generally points to two situations relevant here:

Confirm the current threshold, exceptions, and line numbers in the instructions for the tax year being filed. A jumbo balance does not automatically require Schedule B; the interest amount and ownership facts do.

Joint accounts, nominees, and ownership records

A joint CD can create a mismatch between the person who receives the form and the person who is legally responsible for the income. Review how the bank registered the account and how the owners agreed to divide the interest. If you received a form for interest that belongs to another person, nominee reporting may apply, and Schedule B can be required.

Do not simply delete a form because the account has multiple names. Keep documentation showing the ownership allocation and use the current IRS instructions for nominee reporting. If the bank’s form is wrong, request a correction and retain the correspondence.

Federal versus state and local taxes

The rules above address U.S. federal income tax only. State and local treatment is jurisdiction-specific and is not established by the federal guidance described here. Some jurisdictions follow federal taxable-income calculations closely; others have different additions, subtractions, rates, or filing thresholds. Check the revenue agency for the state where you file and the tax year involved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that a federal reporting result answers the state question, particularly if you moved, changed residency, or held the CD through a state-specific program.

Records to keep for a jumbo CD

  • The signed CD agreement, including payment frequency, maturity date, renewal terms, and withdrawal restrictions.
  • Monthly or annual statements showing interest credited, withdrawn, reinvested, or forfeited.
  • Forms 1099-INT and 1099-OID, including corrected versions.
  • Early-withdrawal notices showing the penalty separately from interest.
  • Documentation of joint ownership, nominee arrangements, or transfers.
  • A reconciliation showing how the amounts on the return were calculated when no form was issued.

Retain records according to your broader tax-record policy and any applicable IRS limitations. Long-term CDs deserve particular attention because the taxable year can differ from the date you ultimately receive the final maturity proceeds.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Treating “jumbo” as a tax status

The label describes deposit size, not a federal exemption. Apply the ordinary CD rules unless the contract has a feature that invokes different timing rules.

Using the $10 threshold as a reporting exemption

The $10 figure determines when a payer generally issues an information statement. It does not permit you to ignore smaller taxable amounts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Taxing only cash withdrawn

Interest credited and available under the contract can be taxable even when it remains in the CD or is automatically reinvested.

Netting an early-withdrawal penalty

Report gross interest and address the penalty separately. Never replace box 1 with a net figure.

Assuming every CD waits until maturity

Interest deferred for more than one year can involve OID rules. Read the contract and the tax form before deciding when income belongs on the return.

Copying a prior-year form line

Form lines, deduction placement, and Schedule B instructions can change. Use the forms and instructions for the tax year you are filing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A decision checklist before filing

  1. Identify whether the account is an ordinary taxable bank CD or part of a different tax-advantaged arrangement.
  2. Determine when each interest amount was paid, credited, and available under the contract.
  3. Look for OID treatment when interest is deferred beyond one year.
  4. Collect every 1099-INT and 1099-OID and compare them with bank records.
  5. Report taxable interest even when no form arrived or the amount is below $10.
  6. Report gross interest before considering any early-withdrawal penalty.
  7. Evaluate Schedule B using the $1,500 guidance and nominee-ownership rules for the filing year.
  8. Check state and local requirements separately.

The central rule is straightforward: a jumbo CD is generally taxed as a taxable bank CD, not as a special category. What requires care is timing, deferred-interest treatment, accurate reconciliation to information forms, and separate handling of any early-withdrawal penalty.
