The card, issuer, country and program year determine whether you receive a status tier directly, earn Status Qualifying Credits (SQC) toward a tier, or receive both. Under Air Canada’s U.S. rules described for 2026, the Chase Air Canada Aeroplan Card provides automatic Aeroplan 25K Status and can add SQC from an annual award and account spending. The status tier—not the card by itself—controls benefits such as priority services, lounge access and eUpgrade credits.
What a credit card actually does in Aeroplan Elite Status
There are two separate mechanisms. A card may grant status directly, or it may deposit Status Qualifying Credits (SQC) that count toward a published tier threshold. An SQC deposit does not create a tier unless your total reaches the applicable threshold and you satisfy the program’s other terms.

For activity from January 1, 2026, Air Canada describes SQC as Aeroplan’s single qualification path, with an Everyday Status Qualification route to 25K. The published thresholds are annual totals:

Those are program thresholds published by Air Canada for 2026-and-later qualification. They are not spending requirements for every Aeroplan card. A card’s annual credits, promotional awards and direct-status benefit must be read separately from the tier table.

The U.S. Chase Aeroplan card arrangement for 2026
Air Canada’s U.S. status information describes a specific arrangement for the Chase Air Canada Aeroplan Card. A newly enrolled cardmember receives automatic 25K Status for the remainder of the calendar year in which the account is opened plus the following calendar year. This is a direct-status benefit; it is different from merely receiving SQC.
How the card’s SQC awards work
Under the arrangement Air Canada describes, the card provides:
- 5,000 SQC as an annual bonus.
- 10,000 SQC after $25,000 in account spend.
- Another 10,000 SQC after $50,000 in account spend.
The card structure also lists achieving 35K status at $75,000 of account spend. Air Canada says Aeroplan members can receive up to a combined 25,000 SQC per calendar year from Aeroplan cards across issuers. That cap applies to the member’s combined eligible card awards, not necessarily to one card in isolation.
Maintaining or reaching status through spending
Air Canada’s U.S. page says $15,000 of account spend during a calendar year keeps 25K Status, while $75,000 can achieve 35K under the described Chase arrangement. These figures are specific to that U.S. card setup and calendar-year account-spend rules. They should not be applied to Canadian cards or to another issuer’s product.
What benefits attach to the status tier
Once you qualify, the tier determines the core Aeroplan Elite Status package. Air Canada says benefits are awarded upon status qualification and remain available for the status-validity period, subject to each benefit’s conditions.

Priority airport services
Core benefits include priority check-in and priority boarding. These can reduce airport queues, but the exact airport, itinerary, cabin and operating-carrier restrictions for a particular priority service still apply. A cardholder should look at the status benefit attached to the member’s Aeroplan account rather than assume every flight receives identical treatment.
Maple Leaf Lounge access
Air Canada lists Maple Leaf Lounge access among the core benefits awarded with status. Lounge eligibility can depend on the applicable tier, itinerary, location and access rules. Holding a card that supplies 25K Status does not turn every airport lounge or every travel companion into an automatic entitlement.
eUpgrade credits
Air Canada’s U.S. status page lists these core eUpgrade-credit amounts for each tier:

These credits are a status benefit, not a cash rebate on card spending. Using them remains subject to fare, flight, space-availability and expiry rules in the applicable eUpgrade terms.
How status timing works
Timing has three separate parts: when the card benefit posts, when a tier is reached, and how long the resulting status lasts. The U.S. Chase description gives a new cardmember 25K for the rest of the opening calendar year and the next calendar year. SQC earned from card spending is measured against calendar-year thresholds, while the status-validity period governs when tier benefits can be used.

For example, a member opening the card late in a year can receive 25K for only the remaining days of that year plus the following year. Opening earlier does not create a permanent tier; it changes the length of the initial partial-year period. Requalification then depends on the rules for the relevant program year.

Canada’s 2026 rules are different
Canadian Aeroplan cardholders should not substitute the U.S. Chase figures for their own products. Air Canada’s Canadian status page describes SQC qualification for activity from January 1, 2026, with different earning mechanics and a separate transition timetable.
How Air Canada flight spending earns SQC in Canada
For Air Canada flights, the Canadian page says Standard fares and above earn SQC. Flex fares and above earn twice the Standard rate:
- Standard fares and eUpgrade add-ons: 2 SQC per eligible dollar.
- Flex fares and higher: 4 SQC per eligible dollar.
- Air Canada Vacations packages: 1 SQC per eligible dollar.
The stated fare calculation excludes taxes, fees and third-party charges. “Eligible dollar” therefore is not simply the total amount charged to a payment card. The fare type and the portion recognized by Aeroplan determine the SQC calculation.
Canadian card and partner caps
Eligible Canadian premium and core Aeroplan card spending can contribute up to a combined 25,000 SQC per member annually. Eligible partner activity can contribute up to an additional 25,000 SQC. Those are separate program limits described by Air Canada; they do not mean every card automatically supplies the maximum.

The announced 2027 Head Start
Air Canada says eligible premium Aeroplan cardholders who requalify for status will receive a 10% Head Start beginning in 2027, based on SQC earned in the previous year. This is an announced future benefit, not a 2026 benefit. Qualification, eligible-card definitions and implementation conditions should be checked in the current Canadian terms when the 2027 program year begins.
Milestone Benefits are separate from the tier package
Air Canada says members can unlock Milestone Benefits at every 10,000 SQC up to 200,000 SQC, and every 20,000 SQC thereafter. All SQC—including credits from cards and partners—count toward these milestones. However, only Aeroplan Elite Status members can earn Milestone Benefits after qualifying for status.
Some milestone rewards are issued automatically; others require the member to make a selection. Reaching a milestone therefore does not necessarily mean that a particular reward appears without an action in the member account. Milestones supplement the tier’s core benefits; they do not replace the tier threshold.

Example 1: New U.S. cardmember
A new U.S. Chase cardmember receives 25K Status for the remainder of the opening year and the next calendar year. If the member also receives the 5,000-SQC annual award, that credit is recorded separately. The member does not become 35K merely because the card supplies 25K status or 5,000 SQC; the 35K threshold remains 35,000 SQC unless the card’s specific spend rule grants the tier under its stated terms.
Example 2: Card spending reaches $25,000
Under the described U.S. structure, $25,000 in calendar-year account spend triggers 10,000 SQC. A member who also received the 5,000 annual award has 15,000 card-derived SQC before counting flights or partners. That total is still below the 25,000-SQC threshold for 25K through the general SQC route, although the member may already hold direct 25K Status from the card.

Example 3: Combining cards and travel
If a member earns card SQC and flight SQC, both can count toward the annual tier threshold, subject to the program’s eligible-source rules and card cap. Keep a running total by source and calendar year; do not assume an award from one issuer can be added without regard to the combined 25,000-SQC card limit.
What happens if the U.S. card is closed
Air Canada says that if the U.S. Chase card is closed for any reason, the 5,000 annual SQC deposited for the current Elite Year will be removed. Status or benefits resulting from those credits may also be rescinded.
This creates a practical risk for anyone relying on card-derived credits to remain above a threshold. Before closing an account, review the Aeroplan activity ledger and recalculate the member’s SQC without the annual award. A tier that falls below its required total may no longer be valid, even if it was previously displayed in the account.

- Identify your country and issuer. Start with the exact card agreement and the Air Canada status page for that market. U.S. Chase rules and Canadian Aeroplan-card rules are not interchangeable.
- Label each benefit. Mark it as direct status, annual SQC, spending-based SQC, flight SQC or partner SQC. This prevents treating a status grant as if it were a credit deposit.
- Track the calendar year. Record when spend thresholds are met, when annual credits post and which program year controls the benefit.
- Compare your total with the tier table. Use 25,000, 35,000, 50,000, 75,000 or 125,000 SQC as applicable. An award is useful only if your eligible total reaches the target.
- Check the benefit’s own restrictions. Lounge access, priority services, eUpgrades and milestone rewards can each have separate conditions.
- Recalculate before changing cards. Remove credits that could be clawed back after closure and see whether your tier or milestone position changes.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming every Aeroplan card grants status. The automatic 25K benefit cited here is specifically described for the U.S. Chase card.
- Calling SQC a guaranteed tier. SQC must be combined with other eligible credits until the applicable threshold is met.
- Mixing U.S. and Canadian rules. Rates, caps, direct-status offers and transition provisions differ by market.
- Counting the gross ticket price. Canadian Air Canada fare calculations exclude taxes, fees and third-party charges from the stated SQC formula.
- Treating status as permanent. Core benefits last for the status-validity period, and Air Canada can change status terms and benefits.
- Ignoring account closure. The U.S. annual 5,000-SQC award can be removed after closure, with resulting status or benefits potentially rescinded.
- Confusing milestones with tier qualification. Milestone Benefits require qualifying status and use their own SQC intervals.
How to verify your personal position
Use the Aeroplan account activity view to identify the source and posting date of each SQC award. Then check the current Air Canada status terms for your country, card issuer and program year. If the account display and card statement appear inconsistent, retain the statement showing the qualifying spend and contact the card issuer or Aeroplan support before relying on a tier benefit for a trip.
The most reliable calculation is a simple worksheet with columns for source, posting date, calendar year, eligible amount, SQC credited and whether the amount counts toward a card cap. This makes it easier to test a planned purchase, a card closure or a status challenge without assuming that every credit has the same treatment.
Bottom line for credit-card-earned Aeroplan status
Aeroplan status through a credit card is a combination of mechanisms, not a single product feature. In the U.S. 2026 arrangement described by Air Canada, the Chase Air Canada Aeroplan Card supplies automatic 25K Status and can add up to the stated annual and spending-based SQC awards, while higher tiers depend on meeting the applicable requirements. Canadian cards follow a different 2026 framework, including separate earning rates, caps and a 2027 Head Start announcement. The tier you actually hold—and the period for which it is valid—determines your priority services, lounge access, eUpgrade credits and milestone eligibility.
