Antimony is recovered from ore through a sequence that usually starts with crushing and grinding, may include flotation to concentrate antimony-bearing minerals, and then uses an extraction route suited to the feed. Depending on its grade and mineralogy, the material may be roasted to make an oxide for reduction, smelted, liquated, treated by iron precipitation, or processed by leaching and electrowinning. The resulting crude metal is refined to remove impurities. These are alternative routes, not steps followed by every ore or producer.
How does ore become antimony metal?
- Prepare the ore. The principal antimony ore mineral is stibnite (Sb2S3), although antimony also occurs in many other minerals and can be recovered as a coproduct from complex ores. Ore is crushed and ground to free antimony-bearing minerals from surrounding gangue, the unwanted mineral material.
- Concentrate the antimony where appropriate. Froth flotation can separate stibnite-rich particles from gangue. This raises the antimony content of the material sent to extraction; flotation itself does not turn ore into metal.
- Select an extraction route. The choice depends on factors including the feed’s grade, mineral form, degree of liberation, associated metals and impurities. Historical technical descriptions outline several distinct options; they are not a universal flowsheet.
- Recover and reduce an intermediate, or produce metal directly by another route. Roasting can produce antimony oxide-bearing fume, which is collected and may be reduced to metal. Other described routes include smelting, liquation, iron precipitation, and leaching followed by electrowinning.
- Refine the crude metal. The crude product may contain arsenic, sulfur, iron, copper and lead. Further treatment removes some impurities or directs impurity-bearing material into other streams or alloys.
What extraction routes are used?
USGS and EPA technical descriptions document several approaches. The route depends on the feed; the older grade bands in historical references are guidance from those sources, not current universal cutoffs or plant-design specifications.

What happens during concentration and roasting?
Flotation concentrates minerals; it does not make metal
A U.S. Geological Survey circular, Antimony Recycling in the United States in 2000 (2000), reports that flotation of low-grade stibnite ore produced concentrate containing more than 60 percent antimony, with recovery of up to 95 percent. These are reported figures from that historical source—not guaranteed results, a modern plant benchmark, or a prediction for a particular ore.
Roasting produces an oxide-bearing intermediate
Roasting conditions affect the oxide product and how much antimony volatilizes into fume. The antimony-bearing particulate must be captured for recovery or reprocessing. Historical process descriptions mention equipment such as baghouses and precipitators; they do not establish current legal requirements or a single equipment configuration for every facility.

How is crude antimony refined?
Extraction produces crude metal, not necessarily a finished product of specified purity. The cited process descriptions identify arsenic, sulfur, iron, copper and lead as possible impurities. They describe removing iron and copper into a matte, then treating the metal with an oxidizing flux to address arsenic and sulfur. Lead is more difficult to remove; lead-bearing material may instead be directed to lead-base alloys. The sources do not provide a current, comparable purity figure for refined antimony.
Why does the flowsheet vary from ore to ore?
A process has to suit both the antimony-bearing mineral and the material around it. Grade matters, but so do mineral liberation, gangue, other metals and the impurity profile. Those properties affect whether concentration is useful and whether an oxide route, smelting, liquation, iron precipitation or hydrometallurgical treatment is suitable.

For a meaningful comparison of two real routes, examine the feed mineralogy and grade, antimony recovery and product quality, treatment of sulfur and impurity-bearing streams, and the demands each route places on energy, emissions, tailings, residues and water management. Antimony can remain in tailings and waste rock, including at mines where it is not the principal recovered commodity. The U.S. Geological Survey’s work on antimony in mine wastes describes how stibnite and sulfosalts can release antimony into surface water and groundwater and contribute to contamination of soils, plants and river sediments. Processing also creates antimony-bearing dust or fume that must be captured as part of material recovery and waste management.
