How Ipswich Town’s Gamechanger 20 Owners Made Their Money—and What’s Actually Known

Gamechanger 20’s Ipswich Town investment was linked to Arizona’s public pension system. Reports describe a pension-fund gain, but do not prove that every individual owner got rich.

Gamechanger 20 Ltd bought Ipswich Town in 2021 in a deal reported at about £40 million, backed principally by an Arizona public pension system through funds managed by ORG Portfolio Management. That explains how the club investment was financed; it does not show that every named owner became rich or reveal their personal fortunes. The clearest reported gain belongs to the institutional investor, not to individual investors personally.

What “got rich” means in this deal

There are three different financial questions behind the headline: who supplied capital to buy Ipswich Town, whether the investment later increased in value, and how wealthy each individual owner is. Public reporting provides meaningful information about the first two, but does not establish personal net-worth figures or proceeds for each named investor.

Gamechanger 20 Ltd was the vehicle used to acquire the club. The Guardian reported the 2021 transaction at about £40 million. The Guardian’s takeover report describes the deal and its participants.

Who funded the 2021 takeover?

PSPRS and ORG Portfolio Management

The controlling investment was linked to Arizona’s Public Safety Personnel Retirement System (PSPRS), a public pension system. Bloomberg reported that PSPRS first backed Ipswich in 2021 through funds managed by ORG Portfolio Management. In other words, the reported capital connection runs from an institutional investor through managed funds into the club’s ownership structure; it is not evidence that ORG or every person associated with the deal personally supplied the full purchase price. Bloomberg’s December 2025 report covers PSPRS’s investment and the later ownership reshuffle.

Three Lions investors and Marcus Evans

The original structure also included investors associated with the Three Lions Fund and Ipswich’s former owner, Marcus Evans. Brett Johnson, Berke Bakay and Mark Detmer were associated with Three Lions and had prior involvement with Phoenix Rising. Those connections help describe their investment background, but the available reporting does not establish how each person originally made their wealth or provide reliable individual net-worth figures. The Guardian’s account of the takeover reports on the consortium, while Bloomberg describes PSPRS’s institutional investment.

What is known about the investment’s return?

Bloomberg characterized PSPRS’s outcome as a sizable gain. It also reported in July 2025 that Brett Johnson was seeking to raise up to £214 million to buy shares, citing people familiar with the matter. That was a reported fundraising effort—not proof that the full amount was raised or spent. Bloomberg’s July 2025 report describes the effort.

Neither a reported club valuation nor an intended share purchase amount is the same as realized profit. The available reporting does not give a precise audited realized-return figure for PSPRS, nor does it establish personal proceeds for each investor. A pension fund’s gain is an institutional investment result; it cannot be attributed automatically to individual consortium members as personal wealth.

How the ownership changed by December 2025

The structure did not remain as it was at the 2021 takeover. Bloomberg reported that Portman Holdings became Gamechanger 20’s majority shareholder in December 2025. ORG remained involved, while Three Lions and Clara Vista Partners increased their investments. The BBC reported that Ed Sheeran retained a 1.4% minority stake and that Clara Vista’s Bob Gold joined the Gamechanger 20 board. These are later ownership facts, separate from the original purchase consortium. Bloomberg’s December 2025 coverage reports the reshuffle.

What can—and cannot—be concluded

  • Supported: Gamechanger 20 acquired Ipswich Town in 2021 in a deal reported at about £40 million, with capital linked to PSPRS through ORG-managed funds and participation from Three Lions investors and Marcus Evans.
  • Reported, but not quantified precisely: PSPRS secured a sizable gain, according to Bloomberg; the available reporting does not establish an audited realized return.
  • Not established: that every named owner became rich from Ipswich, how each individual made their money, or each person’s current net worth and proceeds.
  • Changed since the takeover: Portman Holdings became Gamechanger 20’s majority shareholder in December 2025, while other investors remained involved or increased their stakes.
