The exchange is remembered because it tied an abstract digital currency to an ordinary purchase. That cultural milestone is not, by itself, evidence that Bitcoin became a routine way to pay for everyday goods. The AP reported in 2025 that it had not become common to use Bitcoin for everyday purchases such as pizza.

Who bought pizza with Bitcoin?
Laszlo Hanyecz, a BitcoinTalk user in Jacksonville, Florida, made the offer and reported completing the exchange. In his original post on May 18, 2010, he wrote: “I’ll pay 10,000 bitcoins for a couple of pizzas.. like maybe 2 large ones so I have some left over for the next day.” He said the pizzas could be made or ordered for delivery and listed toppings he liked.
The original completion post does not identify who arranged the order or name a restaurant. In its 2025 account, the AP reported that another Bitcoin enthusiast in California arranged Papa John’s pizzas for delivery to Hanyecz’s Florida home. That detail comes from the AP’s later reporting, not from Hanyecz’s completion post.

How much Bitcoin did the pizzas cost?
Hanyecz offered and reported trading 10,000 BTC for two large pizzas. The AP reported that the Bitcoin was worth about $41 at the time of the 2010 transaction. That is a historical estimate, not a present-day valuation: any current dollar equivalent depends on the Bitcoin price at a specified date and time.
