The maturity year is a portfolio timetable, not a promise that you will receive your original investment. Your result combines price changes, interest distributions, reinvestment rates, credit events, trading costs and the fund’s liquidation process. Holding until the planned end date can reduce the effect of selling at an inconvenient time, but it does not guarantee principal or a predetermined return.
How rate changes reach your fund return
A bond pays a stated coupon. When newly issued bonds of similar quality offer higher yields, that older coupon is less attractive, so the older bond generally must trade at a lower price. When market yields fall, existing bonds with comparatively attractive coupons generally rise in value. A fund’s share price reflects the market value of the bonds and other instruments it holds, so the same relationship appears in the fund’s net asset value.

Vanguard’s March 23, 2026 prospectus describes the relationship this way: “As a general rule, bond prices and interest rates move in opposite directions.” “Interest rates” here means the market yields relevant to the fund’s holdings. A move in a short-term policy rate does not necessarily produce an identical move at every maturity; the yield curve can steepen, flatten or move unevenly.
Duration is the first approximation
Duration estimates how much a fixed-income price may change for a given change in yields. It incorporates factors such as coupon, yield, maturity and call provisions. Longer duration normally means greater sensitivity. A filing made with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission gives this illustration: a bond fund with an average duration of eight years would be expected to fall approximately 8% if interest rates rose by one percentage point.

That 8% is an approximation, not a promised result or a forecast for every target-maturity fund. Actual performance also depends on which part of the yield curve moved, whether credit spreads changed, how cash flows arrived, whether bonds were called, and what the portfolio held on the measurement date. Duration can change as bonds age, are sold, mature or are replaced.
| Approximate yield move | Illustrative duration effect | What the illustration leaves out |
|---|---|---|
| Rates rise 1 percentage point | An eight-year-duration portfolio might decline about 8% in price | Credit-spread moves, curve shape, calls, cash flows, fees, distributions and portfolio changes |
| Rates fall 1 percentage point | The same simplified relationship would imply about an 8% price increase | The estimate is not a guarantee; income and reinvestment outcomes can move in the opposite direction |
Total return is more than the share-price change
Your total return combines the change in the fund’s share value with interest and other distributions. Reinvested distributions buy additional shares; taking them in cash produces a different account balance. Operating expenses, bid-ask spreads and the price at which you trade also matter.
When rates rise
A rising-rate period can create an immediate price decline because the bonds already in the portfolio are repriced. As bonds mature, are called or are replaced, the fund can invest proceeds at higher yields. That can improve future income, but it does not automatically offset a loss for an investor who sells soon after rates rise. The result depends on your purchase price, sale date, remaining duration, distribution choices and subsequent credit conditions.

When rates fall
Existing bonds may appreciate, lifting the fund’s share value. The income outlook can weaken, however, because maturing or called bonds may be replaced with lower-yielding securities. Vanguard identifies this as income and reinvestment risk: proceeds from a called bond may have to be reinvested at a lower rate. A price gain therefore does not guarantee that future distributions will remain at the same level.

What the target-maturity year actually means
A target-maturity fund is built around bonds expected to mature in a stated year and has a planned end or liquidation date. The date organizes the portfolio; it does not convert the fund into a guaranteed certificate of deposit.
Example: a 2027 corporate-bond ETF
Vanguard’s 2027 corporate-bond ETF says it will liquidate on or about December 15, 2027. Its prospectus also says that the fund does not seek to return any predetermined amount at liquidation or in periodic distributions. The liquidation value and distributions can therefore be higher or lower than your original investment.
As bonds mature, the fund may hold the proceeds in cash or cash equivalents. During the 12 months before planned liquidation, it may also hold other qualifying debt securities. The prospectus says the yield generally tends to move toward prevailing money-market rates during that final year. The fund is consequently not preserving the original mix of corporate-bond exposure right up to the final day.

The same filing offers a useful but qualified expectation: “In general, if held until the Planned Liquidation Date, an investment in the Fund may produce returns comparable to a direct investment in a group of bonds of similar maturity and credit quality.” The words “in general” and “may” are important. A fund has expenses, trading activity, defaults, calls and market-price effects that a hypothetical group of bonds may not share.

Will you get your principal back if you hold until the end?
Not necessarily. Holding through the planned liquidation date removes the need to sell on an interim day, but it cannot remove issuer default, credit losses, fees, trading costs, call effects or the possibility that the portfolio’s market value is below your cost. Nor does it fix the amount of distributions you will receive. A target date is a planned liquidation date, not a principal guarantee.
If you need a known dollar amount on a known date, compare the fund with instruments that explicitly promise repayment and understand the applicable issuer and insurance protections. A target-maturity fund should be evaluated as a diversified, market-priced bond portfolio whose exposure changes over time.
Risks that can dominate the rate effect
Credit risk
An issuer’s financial deterioration or default can reduce the value of its bonds and the fund’s shares, regardless of what government or market rates are doing. Review the portfolio’s credit-quality distribution, concentration limits and default history disclosures.
Liquidity risk
If a holding is difficult to sell, the fund may accept a less favorable price, particularly during market stress. Your own ETF trade can also be affected by bid-ask spreads and market depth. A quoted net asset value is not the same as a guaranteed execution price.

Call risk
A callable bond can be repaid before its stated maturity, often when rates have fallen and the issuer can refinance more cheaply. The fund then receives cash and may have to reinvest at lower yields. Calls can also change the portfolio’s expected cash-flow pattern.
Extension risk
When rates rise, issuers are less likely to refinance. A bond expected to mature or be called soon can remain outstanding longer, leaving the fund exposed to higher duration and a larger price response than an investor expected from the maturity label alone.
Terminal-period exposure
The shift toward cash, cash equivalents and other qualifying securities near liquidation can lower or change the fund’s sensitivity to longer-term rates. Income in that period may track money-market conditions more closely than the earlier corporate- or government-bond portfolio.
Different fund designs
Not every target-maturity fund uses the same process. The cited Vanguard funds are organized around different target years. A State Street prospectus describes a fund that may use derivatives to manage yield, duration, maturity and credit exposure. Read each fund’s current prospectus rather than assuming that every fund with a year in its name has identical holdings or risk controls.

How to compare target-maturity funds
Do not select solely by the year in the name. Use the current prospectus, shareholder report and trading data to answer these questions:
| Comparison item | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Target year and planned liquidation date | Defines the intended time horizon and when the portfolio changes toward its endpoint | Exact date, whether liquidation is “on or about” a date, and procedures for shareholders |
| Current and projected duration | Indicates approximate sensitivity to yield changes | Average duration, maturity distribution and how duration is expected to decline |
| Credit quality | Influences default and spread risk | Investment-grade or below-investment-grade exposure, issuer concentration and sector mix |
| Income and distribution policy | Determines how interest reaches your account | Distribution frequency, variable income and reinvestment arrangements |
| Calls and extensions | Can alter cash flows and the effective maturity | Callable holdings, call assumptions and extension disclosures |
| Liquidity | Affects the price you receive when trading | Average daily volume, bid-ask spreads and the liquidity of underlying bonds |
| Costs | Expenses reduce returns over the holding period | Current expense ratio, transaction costs and any purchase or sale charges |
| Terminal-period treatment | Determines what replaces maturing bonds before liquidation | Permitted cash equivalents, final-year holdings and expected yield behavior |
| Use of derivatives | Can change exposure and introduce additional counterparties or collateral rules | Whether derivatives are permitted, their purpose and related risks |
Current comparative yields, fees and holdings vary and were not established here. Verify those figures in the latest documents before investing; they can change after publication.
A practical process for evaluating one fund
- Set the date you actually need the money. Compare it with the fund’s planned liquidation date. A mismatch may force an interim sale.
- Read the objective and principal risks. Confirm the bond types, credit range, target year and whether the fund uses derivatives or can hold securities beyond the simple maturity bucket.
- Record duration and credit exposure. Treat duration as a sensitivity estimate, not a return prediction. Check how both measures have changed in recent reports.
- Inspect the terminal rules. Find out when the portfolio may move into cash or cash equivalents, what distributions can vary, and what happens at liquidation.
- Estimate your cash-flow needs. Decide whether distributions will be reinvested or withdrawn and account for taxes and trading costs applicable to your account.
- Check trading conditions. Review the bid-ask spread and typical volume before placing an order; use limit orders when appropriate for an exchange-traded fund.
- Stress-test two paths. Consider what you would do if rates rise sharply and the share price falls before your date, or if rates fall and income declines after calls and maturities.
- Re-read the latest filing before purchase. Target dates, holdings, expenses and policies can change, so an old fact sheet is not a substitute for current documents.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- “The year means my money is guaranteed then.” It means a planned end date, not a guaranteed payout. Check the liquidation language.
- “Duration tells me exactly what I will earn.” It approximates an immediate price response to a yield move; it does not model credit, calls, curve changes, distributions or fees.
- “Higher rates are automatically good because future income rises.” Existing bonds can lose value first, and the timing may not suit an investor who must sell.
- “A lower rate environment is always good for bond funds.” Prices may rise while reinvestment income falls as bonds mature or are called.
- “All target-maturity funds work alike.” Credit quality, derivatives, liquidity and final-year rules differ. Compare the actual prospectuses.
- “The net asset value is the price I will receive.” Exchange trading occurs at market prices, which can differ from net asset value and include a spread.
Bottom line for investors
Interest-rate changes affect a target-maturity fund through both price and income. Rising yields usually pressure the current share value, with longer duration magnifying the approximate move; falling yields can lift prices but reduce the rates available when bonds mature or are called. The target year helps align a portfolio with a time horizon, yet it does not promise principal, distributions or a fixed return. Compare duration, credit quality, calls, liquidity, costs and terminal-period rules, then match the planned liquidation date to the date you can genuinely hold the investment.
