Through-silicon vias connect the dies, while a very wide connection between the memory and processor moves data in parallel. This design helps AI accelerators get the steady flow of model data and intermediate results their many compute units need.
HBM addresses a data-transfer bottleneck, not every limit in an AI system. It does not replace system memory or storage, and higher bandwidth does not automatically mean greater capacity. Those distinctions explain both why data centers use HBM and why it is only one part of their memory infrastructure.

What is high-bandwidth memory?
High-bandwidth memory, usually shortened to HBM, is a specialized form of dynamic random-access memory (DRAM). Rather than arranging memory chips as separate modules on a motherboard, HBM stacks multiple DRAM dies vertically and integrates the resulting stack beside a processor, commonly an AI accelerator, in one package.

For a data center, that matters because an accelerator can have substantial computing capacity yet be unable to use it fully if data arrives too slowly. HBM is designed to reduce that mismatch by widening the memory connection and keeping the memory physically close to the processor.
How does HBM work?
Memory dies are stacked and linked
An HBM stack contains multiple thin DRAM dies arranged one above another, sometimes above a base die. Thousands of tiny vertical electrical connections called through-silicon vias (TSVs) pass through the silicon dies to connect the layers. Microbumps make electrical connections between adjacent dies. Together, these components let the stack operate as a compact, interconnected block of memory rather than as a set of distant chips.
Making and assembling that structure is more involved than placing conventional memory chips on a board. The dies must be thinned, TSVs formed, layers aligned and joined, and the finished stack integrated into a package. The physical design is a source of HBM’s performance advantage, but it also creates manufacturing challenges.

HBM is typically integrated with its processor in a system-in-package. A silicon interposer often provides the broad connection between the accelerator and the HBM stacks. The short distance and wide interface support moving many bits at once between memory and compute.
A useful analogy is to picture two roads: one with a small number of lanes and another with many more lanes carrying traffic in parallel. HBM’s advantage is closer to adding lanes than simply making each lane faster. The analogy describes interface width and parallel data movement; HBM is not literally a faster-clocked DIMM.

SK hynix’s technical explanation describes HBM as a way to address the gap between the bandwidth demanded by a system-on-chip and what conventional main memory can supply. Its historical example compared four HBM2 stacks around one system-on-chip, capable of more than 1 TB/s, with an eight-channel DDR4 CPU platform at 204.8 GB/s. Those figures describe the generations and platform context in that older explanation. They are not a current, like-for-like benchmark between contemporary systems.
Why do AI data centers need HBM?
AI accelerators perform many operations in parallel. During those operations, they need access to model parameters, activations and other working data. If the memory system cannot supply data as quickly as the compute units can process it, some of the accelerator’s compute capacity may sit idle while it waits.

HBM’s wide interface and in-package placement are intended to keep more data flowing to and from the processor. That is particularly relevant to AI workloads with large amounts of data movement alongside computation. But HBM addresses only the memory connection next to the accelerator. It does not remove bottlenecks in the accelerator’s compute, the network connecting machines, or the storage system feeding data into a workload.
Accordingly, HBM should be understood as one component of an AI data center, not as a stand-alone guarantee of faster training or inference. Overall results depend on the system and workload as well as memory. A bandwidth specification describes a product capability; it does not, by itself, establish how quickly a particular model will run.
What is the difference between bandwidth and capacity?
Capacity is how much information a memory can hold at once. Bandwidth is how much information can move between memory and processor in a period of time. They answer different questions: capacity is about how much fits, while bandwidth is about how quickly data can be transferred.

A high-bandwidth stack still has finite capacity. Raising its bandwidth does not necessarily increase the amount of data it can hold. Likewise, comparing accelerators by bandwidth alone can obscure how much HBM each system has in total. A meaningful comparison needs to account for the capacity per stack, the number of stacks, and the system’s usable aggregate capacity as well as its bandwidth.
HBM is also not a replacement for all other memory. Micron says HBM4 works alongside memory such as DDR5 or LPDDR5 rather than replacing those types. Data centers use multiple layers because each has a role in holding or moving information; HBM is the high-bandwidth memory closest to the accelerator, not a substitute for the entire memory and storage system.
How does HBM fit into the data-center memory hierarchy?
AI systems combine memory and storage tiers rather than asking one kind of hardware to do every job. In its descriptions of AI infrastructure, SK hynix distinguishes HBM near the accelerator, AI-DRAM as server or system memory, and AI-NAND as storage for larger data volumes. These labels describe roles in a hierarchy; they do not mean every data center uses an identical design.
Training workloads
Training uses data and intermediate results while a model is being developed. SK hynix characterizes training as a workload that prioritizes bandwidth and capacity. That is a useful tendency rather than a universal rule: actual requirements depend on the model, the accelerator, and the system configuration. HBM can serve the accelerator’s immediate high-bandwidth needs, while other memory and storage tiers support the broader job.
Inference workloads
Inference is the use of a trained model to produce outputs. SK hynix says inference places increasing emphasis on responsiveness, efficient processing and long-context operation. Those priorities do not make HBM irrelevant, but they mean that bandwidth alone is not a complete description of what a serving system needs. The workload’s latency sensitivity, context length and memory demands matter too.

In either case, the practical question is not simply whether a system has HBM. It is whether the capacity, bandwidth and wider memory hierarchy suit the job. A workload that needs more data resident at once may have different requirements from one whose main constraint is how quickly data moves.

These numbers should not be treated as an independent, same-condition contest between manufacturers. They are vendor specifications for different products and generations, and the cited information does not provide a matched independent benchmark comparing the vendors on equivalent systems. Nor do per-stack figures alone tell you an accelerator’s total bandwidth or total memory capacity: both depend on how many stacks are used and on the product configuration.
When comparing two HBM products or accelerator systems, check the generation and exact configuration; capacity per stack and across the accelerator; per-stack and aggregate bandwidth; and compatibility with the package and supported memory hierarchy. Power efficiency under comparable workloads, workload fit, system-level cost and availability are also relevant, but the cited product specifications do not establish matched performance, cost or availability comparisons.
Why is HBM difficult to manufacture and scale?
HBM combines thin DRAM dies, TSV formation, stacking and advanced package integration. Each part has to work within a compact assembly in which the layers and connections must be made precisely. Micron says the precision required by a TSV-connected stacked structure makes HBM challenging to produce. SK hynix’s technical explanation also points to the difficulty of reducing TSV dimensions and increasing stack height while preserving assembly yields.

These manufacturing demands help explain why HBM is a specialized component integrated into AI and high-performance computing systems rather than a common, user-installable memory module. They also make simple assumptions about supply or price unsafe. The cited material does not quantify HBM manufacturing cost, production yield or HBM’s share of an accelerator’s total cost, so those figures cannot be inferred from the technical design alone.
What does industry coordination tell us?
On June 7, 2026, NVIDIA and SK hynix announced a multiyear technology partnership focused on co-developing next-generation memory and coordinating supply with NVIDIA’s AI infrastructure roadmap. It is a concrete example of memory makers and accelerator companies aligning development and supply plans.
The announcement does not, on its own, establish future shipment volumes, market share or the timing of specific products. NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang said in the announcement, “AI factories are the engines of the next industrial revolution, and advanced memory is essential to their performance.” That is a company-announcement statement, not a neutral measurement of HBM’s performance.

Can HBM be bought as a consumer memory upgrade?
HBM is described in the cited material as integrated in-package memory for AI and high-performance computing systems. That material does not establish a standalone consumer HBM module or a suitable retail HBM upgrade. A conventional RAM DIMM is not an equivalent replacement: it has a different physical and system role, and it does not recreate an accelerator package designed for HBM.
For someone assessing AI infrastructure rather than purchasing a computer part, the useful point is that HBM is part of a system-level design. Its value depends on the processor package, stack configuration, workload and supporting memory hierarchy—not merely on a memory label or a single bandwidth figure.
