Re:

How Geothermal Lithium Projects Compare With Conventional Brine Operations

Geothermal lithium can pair direct extraction with power generation and avoid pond fields, but full-scale water use, economics and commercial output still require project-level evidence.

Geothermal lithium projects recover lithium from hot underground brine already brought to the surface for geothermal power; conventional salar-brine operations typically concentrate brine in large evaporation ponds. The geothermal approach can combine electricity and mineral production while avoiding pond fields, but it is not automatically lower-impact or commercially proven: results depend on the extraction process, water and energy needs, waste handling, reinjection, and demonstrated performance at scale.

What is the difference between geothermal lithium and conventional brine operations?

The distinction is primarily about the source and processing route. A geothermal project draws hot, lithium-bearing brine from a deep reservoir as part of geothermal operations. It can generate electricity and then treat the brine to recover lithium before returning treated brine underground. Conventional salar operations draw brine from salt-flat aquifers and commonly concentrate it in a series of open-air evaporation ponds before further chemical processing.

Neither label describes one universal design. Geothermal projects can use different direct lithium extraction (DLE) technologies, and some newer non-geothermal brine projects are also testing DLE rather than relying on ponds. “Conventional brine” in this comparison means the established salar route that typically uses evaporation ponds—not every lithium project that processes brine.

Comparison Geothermal brine with DLE Conventional salar brine, typically ponds
Starting point Hot subsurface brine circulated to the surface for geothermal energy; lithium recovery can be integrated with power operations. Lithium-bearing salar brine, commonly developed as a mineral operation.
How lithium is concentrated or recovered A selective extraction circuit, impurity treatment, and product purification; treated brine may be reinjected. Solar evaporation concentrates brine in ponds over time, followed by chemical processing.
Land use DOE and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory describe a smaller footprint than other mining approaches; actual project land needs vary. Large pond fields are a defining feature of the conventional pond-based route; the required area varies by site.
Water comparison A DOE/LBNL 2023 fact sheet reports 99% less water per ton than current lithium mining processes. DOE says commercial-scale DLE water use is not yet confidently quantified. Water impacts depend on local hydrology, process design, and accounting boundary; no universal comparable figure is established here.
Operating time and recovery DOE says DLE takes less time and has a higher recovery rate, but actual performance depends on the brine and technology. Pond concentration takes time; recovery depends on brine chemistry and pond and process management.
Commercial maturity Technologies range from early development to demonstration and planned commercial projects. Planned capacity is not proof of operating output. Commercial pond operations are established in several salar settings, though practices and effects differ by site.

The comparison is useful for understanding process trade-offs, not for ranking every project. A particular geothermal facility may have substantial water or reagent requirements, while a particular salar operation may have different hydrological conditions and mitigation measures. Site boundaries and consistent measurement matter.

How does geothermal direct lithium extraction work?

Direct lithium extraction is a family of methods that selectively capture lithium from brine rather than relying on prolonged solar evaporation as the main concentration step. It is not a standardized machine or single flowsheet. A facility must handle the full brine stream, including impurities and residuals, as well as produce a purified lithium chemical suitable for further use.

  1. Bring geothermal brine to the surface. Wells produce hot brine from a deep reservoir as part of geothermal operations. At California’s Salton Sea geothermal resource area, the lithium is in this underground brine, not in the lake’s surface water.
  2. Generate geothermal energy and prepare the brine. The geothermal plant uses the hot fluid for energy production. Before lithium recovery, the process may remove interfering minerals such as silica and iron. The exact treatment depends on the brine chemistry and technology.
  3. Capture lithium selectively. In DOE’s generalized process description, options include adsorbent beads, electrochemical methods, and electrodialysis. These are examples of different approaches, not components every project necessarily combines.
  4. Separate and purify the product. A filter or membrane and additional processing can separate lithium from the treated stream and purify it into a battery chemical. Extracting lithium from brine is not the same as producing a finished battery or proving that the output meets a buyer’s specifications.
  5. Manage the remaining brine and other streams. DOE describes the remaining brine as being reinjected into the geothermal reservoir. That is a generalized process description; project designs can differ, and solids, chemical inputs, and other residual streams still require management.

Reinjection is important to the geothermal concept because the brine is part of an underground reservoir and energy system. It should be considered with reservoir pressure, resource management, monitoring, and handling of any streams not reinjected. Reinjection by itself does not establish that a project has zero environmental impact.

What changes when brine is concentrated in evaporation ponds?

In a conventional pond-based salar operation, brine is pumped into a sequence of large ponds. Sun and dry conditions evaporate water, concentrating the brine in stages before chemical processing turns it into a lithium product. The process relies on suitable climate, brine chemistry, pond residence time, and extensive pond infrastructure.

That route’s principal physical distinction is the large surface area devoted to ponds. Its performance and effects are site-dependent: evaporation conditions, local water balance, brine composition, pond design, and operating practice all matter. A claim about one salar cannot be applied automatically to every salar, just as one DLE project cannot establish the performance of the entire geothermal category.

Does geothermal lithium use less land and water?

Land footprint

Geothermal DLE can avoid the expansive evaporation-pond field that defines conventional pond-based concentration. DOE and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) report a smaller footprint for DLE than for other mining approaches. That is a broad comparison, not a guarantee that any specific geothermal project has a small total footprint.

A geothermal lithium facility still needs wells, pipelines, treatment equipment, product-processing structures, roads, utilities, and a plan for residuals. For context, DOE project documents for the proposed ATLiS project describe a site of roughly 79 acres and about 730,000 square feet of buildings. Those figures describe that project’s proposed site and buildings; they do not define a typical geothermal facility or provide a direct, like-for-like comparison with a named salar operation.

Water use

A DOE/LBNL fact sheet published in 2023 reports that DLE uses 99% less water per ton of lithium than current lithium mining processes. Treat that as the fact sheet’s broad comparison, not as a measured, universal water result for every geothermal project. The comparison’s accounting boundary and a project’s operating conditions matter, and a per-ton figure does not, by itself, tell a local community how much water a facility would use in total.

DOE’s geothermal FAQ adds a critical qualification: “It’s currently difficult to estimate water consumption for direct lithium extraction because we don’t have enough data yet about the processes that will be used and how the technology will perform at commercial scale.” As of the FAQ accessed October 13, 2026, DOE said there was not enough full-scale operating data to estimate DLE water consumption confidently. Construction water, water used by the geothermal power operation, and incremental water consumed by the lithium circuit are also different quantities; they should not be collapsed into one figure.

For the Salton Sea specifically, DOE says geothermal facilities do not draw water from the lake itself or affect its level. That statement concerns the lake and geothermal facilities; it does not settle every question about a particular project’s water use, local environmental effects, or treatment process.

How do time, recovery, and power co-production compare?

DOE describes DLE as taking less time and achieving a higher lithium recovery rate than conventional evaporation-pond operations. The practical advantage is that selective extraction need not wait for the same sequence of solar evaporation and concentration. However, “DLE” covers multiple technologies, and recovery depends on feed chemistry and process design. A general statement about the category is not a project-specific recovery guarantee.

Geothermal operations also have a distinctive co-product context: the brine is already part of a system that can generate electricity, so a facility may produce power and lithium at one site. That can offer an operational and supply-chain advantage, but it does not mean electricity is free, that the lithium process requires no additional energy, or that co-location ensures economic success. Energy, reagents, maintenance, product purification, and management of residuals all affect facility performance.

For conventional pond-based operations, solar evaporation is central to concentration. Its pace depends on the site’s climate and operating conditions, and a large pond area is needed to accommodate the process. This does not mean every brine project follows that route: some non-geothermal projects are evaluating DLE as well.

What do the Salton Sea lithium estimates actually mean?

The Salton Sea area is prominent because geothermal plants already bring deep brine to the surface and the region has significant estimated lithium resources. But four different quantities are often confused: resource categories, lithium contained in brine flowing through existing plants, potential geothermal electricity capacity, and planned lithium-product capacity. None is interchangeable with actual saleable lithium output.

Figure What it describes What it does not establish
400 MW Existing geothermal electricity capacity in the Salton Sea Known Geothermal Resource Area, according to DOE/LBNL in 2023. It is power capacity, not lithium-plant capacity or lithium production.
21,500 tons per year DOE/LBNL’s 2023 estimate of lithium contained in brine at that existing 400 MW capacity; the fact sheet said it was not then being recovered. It is not saleable annual product or evidence that 21,500 tons were produced.
Up to 2,950 MW Potential geothermal electricity capacity in the region cited by DOE/LBNL in 2023, dependent on technology advances and additional geothermal development. It is not existing capacity or a prediction of lithium output.
760 ktons accessible; 2,600 ktons proven; 3,400 ktons probable Distinct lithium resource categories reported by DOE/LBNL in 2023. These categories should not be combined into one reserve figure or interpreted as annual production.
Up to 20,000 metric tons of lithium hydroxide per year Expected annual output for the planned ATLiS project in DOE’s 2025 announcement. It is projected capacity, not verified operating production.

The figures describe different things and come with different qualifications. A resource estimate does not prove that the material can be recovered economically; lithium passing through a plant does not equal lithium captured; and a project’s planned nameplate capacity does not establish actual output, product quality, or sales.

Is geothermal lithium already being produced commercially in the United States?

The available project announcements establish a planned commercial facility, not confirmed commercial production. On January 15, 2025, the U.S. Department of Energy Loan Programs Office announced a conditional commitment to SPV ESM ATLiS LLC, a subsidiary of EnergySource Minerals, for a direct loan of up to $1.36 billion to build a facility in Imperial County, California. DOE said the planned facility was expected to produce up to 20,000 metric tons of lithium hydroxide annually and would be the first U.S. commercial-scale DLE plant. The announcement described proprietary ILiAD technology and a process that returns lithium-depleted brine for reinjection.

In March 2025, DOE published the final environmental assessment and signed a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI). DOE expressly cautioned: “The Finding of No Significant Impact should not be construed as a final decision about issuance of a federal loan.” A conditional commitment and completed environmental review steps are not the same as a final loan issuance, completed construction, commissioning, or verified output. The production figure remains an expectation unless a newer primary disclosure confirms that the plant has begun operating and reports actual production.

Technology maturity also varies within the DLE field. In September 2026, DOE listed a University of Virginia project using an electro-sorption/electromembrane process at technology readiness level 3, with work intended to advance it to TRL 5 by December 2026. That is an example of an early-stage approach, not evidence that all geothermal DLE is at the same stage or that the planned commercial facility uses that technology.

What are the main environmental and operating uncertainties?

  • Scale-up and process performance: a demonstration or planned capacity does not establish long-term commercial recovery, uptime, product quality, or operating cost.
  • Water accounting: distinguish water used by existing geothermal electricity operations from incremental lithium-extraction consumption and construction needs. Full-scale DLE water use remains difficult to estimate confidently.
  • Brine chemistry and impurities: geothermal brines can contain high salinity and interfering minerals, including silica and iron. Removing those materials and managing resulting solids are part of the operation, not optional details.
  • Energy and reagents: selective recovery and purification can require energy and chemical inputs. Their quantities and impacts vary with the process and the feed brine.
  • Reinjection and reservoir management: return of treated brine is central to the concept, but project monitoring, pressure management, and any residual streams matter to evaluating performance.
  • Lifecycle emissions: DOE/LBNL’s 2023 fact sheet says DLE emits almost no carbon dioxide. That broad assessment should not be read as a zero-emissions lifecycle result for every project; electricity, reagents, construction, transport, and downstream conversion may fall inside or outside a given accounting boundary.
  • Local and permitting conditions: agency coordination, permits, community concerns, and coexistence with geothermal operations shape whether a project can proceed and how its effects are managed. Resource potential does not guarantee local consent or economic benefits.

What do the available cost figures tell a reader?

A National Renewable Energy Laboratory techno-economic assessment published in 2021 estimated production costs near $4,000 per metric ton of lithium carbonate equivalent for the projects it reviewed. This is a historical assessment, not a current market quote, a guaranteed cost for the Salton Sea, or a confirmed cost for the ATLiS project. It also uses lithium carbonate equivalent, whereas ATLiS’s expected output is stated as lithium hydroxide; the products and units should not be treated as identical without conversion assumptions.

For a financial comparison, the most important missing piece is a current, audited, project-level operating record that reports comparable output, recovery, water use, energy and reagent inputs, residual management, and costs. Planned capacity and resource estimates can help explain why developers are interested, but they do not establish profitability or the effect of a future facility on lithium prices. A project’s actual economics depend on construction and financing, process performance, operating costs, product specifications, and market conditions.

How should you interpret claims comparing the two routes?

Ask what is being compared before accepting a headline metric. “Less water” needs a defined unit, baseline, geography, and accounting boundary; “higher recovery” needs a named process and feed brine; “low emissions” needs a lifecycle scope; and “production” needs to mean actual product rather than lithium in a resource or brine stream. A useful project comparison should separate:

  • the amount of lithium estimated underground from the amount recoverable under a demonstrated process;
  • the lithium passing through an operation from the quantity captured and refined into saleable product;
  • planned annual capacity from actual annual production;
  • power-plant water and emissions from the incremental lithium circuit; and
  • general technology-category claims from independently reported results for a specific facility.

Geothermal DLE’s strongest structural distinction is that it can recover lithium from geothermal brine without the large evaporation-pond concentration step, while potentially sharing a site with electricity generation. Conventional salar pond operations use an established concentration route that depends on arid conditions and large pond infrastructure. Neither description alone resolves the questions a community, regulator, buyer, or investor should ask about a specific project’s water balance, costs, environmental controls, or commercial reliability.
