A sponsored PerthNow profile says Nate McGann turned a search for meaningful work into a mental-health support career after studying the Certificate IV in Mental Health at North Metropolitan TAFE. He found part-time work with Avivo before finishing the course. The qualification is also listed on Western Australia’s 2026 fee-free course list, though that does not guarantee a place, personal eligibility or zero costs for every student.
How Nate moved into mental-health support
In a sponsored profile published by PerthNow, Nate McGann describes reflecting on his direction during the COVID-19 pandemic and wanting work that felt meaningful and supported people experiencing mental-health challenges. He enrolled in a Certificate IV in Mental Health at North Metropolitan TAFE. The profile says he took a part-time role with Avivo before completing the course and works with seniors and people living with disabilities. Those details are the profile’s account, not a promise of the same outcome for other students.
Nate is quoted in the profile as saying, “From day one I felt that I was where I belonged.” The profile also attributes to him: “I absolutely love the job I have now and finally understand that feeling of ‘job satisfaction’.”
A separate 2024 Western Australian Government Training Awards announcement identifies Nathan McGann as a finalist in the Certificate IV in Mental Health category, trained at North Metropolitan TAFE and employed by Avivo Life. It says the training provided theoretical and practical knowledge and helped cement his career choice. The announcement and profile corroborate his training route, but do not establish his current employment status.
Can you study Certificate IV in Mental Health for free in WA?
The qualification, national code CHC43315, appears on Jobs and Skills WA’s 2026 fee-free course list, version 1, effective 1 January 2026. That establishes that the qualification is included on the published list; it does not establish whether a particular person qualifies, whether a course intake has places, or whether every course-related expense is covered.
The sponsored profile also cautions that eligibility criteria and other fees may apply. Before making a financial or study decision, confirm eligibility, current intakes, delivery arrangements and any additional costs with North Metropolitan TAFE or a Jobs and Skills Centre.
How to check your options before enrolling
- Confirm the course and code. Check the current Jobs and Skills WA fee-free course list for Certificate IV in Mental Health (CHC43315), then verify the details with North Metropolitan TAFE.
- Ask about your circumstances. Contact the provider or a Jobs and Skills Centre to check eligibility, available places, delivery mode, start dates and any fees not covered by the fee-free listing.
- Consider the work as well as the qualification. Ask the provider about course requirements and practical experience, and consider whether the work suits your interests and circumstances. Nate’s story is one person’s experience, not a guarantee of employment.
Jobs and Skills WA provides information about free and reduced-fee courses, apprenticeships and traineeships. The WA Government describes Jobs and Skills Centres as offering free career, training and jobseeker support. The centres are a useful place to discuss career changes, finding a new job or upskilling before committing to a course.

Check dates carefully
A WA Government campaign announcement in October 2025 described more than 250 fee-free and low-fee TAFE courses and gave 6 February 2026 as the Semester 1 application deadline. That deadline has passed. Do not rely on it as an open application date: check the current TAFE WA or Jobs and Skills WA information, or ask a Jobs and Skills Centre about future dates.
