How Farmers Should Respond to a Soybean Rally, According to Market Analysts

A rally does not require an all-or-nothing sale. Compare net bids, delivery terms, farm cash needs, and price-protection options before marketing soybean bushels.

When soybean prices rally, farmers should use the move to check their marketing plan—not automatically sell everything or wait for a higher price. Compare local net bids with production costs and cash-flow needs, then consider an appropriate mix of contracted sales and price protection. Bryan Doherty of Total Farm Marketing illustrates one possible mix, but the right decision depends on each farm’s bushels, delivery obligations, basis exposure, and capacity to absorb risk.

What should farmers do when soybean prices rally?

Treat a rally as an opportunity to make planned, farm-specific decisions. Start with the bushels you expect to have available, your cost and cash-flow requirements, and any storage or delivery constraints. Decide what net price is acceptable for those bushels, then compare available contracts and risk-management tools before committing.

Senior market adviser Bryan Doherty, vice president of brokerage solutions at Total Farm Marketing, recommends a balanced approach: cash sales can capture prices during a rally, but selling too much too soon can leave the farm exposed if prices continue higher. He also warns that some cash contracts have “double-up” potential—if prices rise, the seller may have to deliver twice the contracted bushels. Read the contract carefully and confirm the maximum quantity you could be obligated to deliver.

Doherty’s example is to cash-contract 50% of expected production and buy puts on the other 50%. This is an illustration, not a universal percentage, proven outcome, or recommendation for every operation. Futures and options involve significant risk and may not suit everyone; no marketing method guarantees a profit. Doherty advises farmers to understand a strategy’s possible consequences and rewards and to work with a professional to find a fit.

  • Easy Direct Sow: edamame seeds for planting outdoors need 1" depth and 12" spacing, no trellis required; bush habit suits containers or raised beds, making veggie seeds ideal for small spaces.
  • Disease-Smart Cultivation: edamame seeds to plant resist common pests when grown in full sun and evenly moist soil; gardening kit growers mulch to conserve water and pick bright green pods before they yellow.

Should you sell soybeans now or wait?

There is no market forecast in the available information that can determine whether a particular farmer should sell today or wait. Instead of making an all-or-nothing timing call, compare the current opportunity with your farm’s actual needs and the consequences of each choice.

  • Production: Base commitments on a realistic estimate of harvestable bushels. Selling more than you produce can leave you needing to buy grain or otherwise cover a shortfall.
  • Cash flow: Identify when the operation needs revenue for bills, debt service, or other obligations. A price opportunity that does not meet timing needs may not solve a cash-flow problem.
  • Storage and delivery: Check when and where grain can be delivered, what storage is available, and whether the contract’s delivery window fits the farm’s harvest and logistics.
  • Risk capacity: Consider how much unpriced grain, basis exposure, option premium, or potential delivery obligation the operation can carry.

A market rally can improve the price available for some bushels without making every available contract attractive. Evaluate each choice by its net proceeds and obligations, not just the futures screen.

How can you protect a price floor and retain upside?

Cash contracts, puts, minimum-price contracts, and arrangements that separate the futures decision from basis or delivery terms work differently. Their availability and precise terms depend on the buyer, location, and contract. Compare them before deciding which, if any, fits.

Approach What it can do What to verify
Cash or forward sale Fixes a sale price or agreed pricing terms for specified bushels. Net price after basis and freight; quantity and delivery timing; buyer reliability; and all contract obligations.
Put option Can establish a futures-price floor while retaining potential upside above the strike, subject to the option’s terms. Strike price, premium, expiration, brokerage access, remaining basis risk, and whether the operation can bear the cost and risk.
Minimum-price contract May combine a minimum price with potential upside through a buyer or elevator. Whether delivery is required, fees and pricing terms, and how the floor is calculated.
Basis or hedge-to-arrive arrangement Can separate the futures-price decision from local basis or cash delivery terms. Futures reference month, when basis is set, delivery date and location, charges, and expected net proceeds.

A put does not eliminate every risk: the farm still needs to consider the option premium and local basis. A minimum-price contract may require delivery, and a cash sale commits the stated bushels under its terms. The 50%-cash/50%-puts example from Doherty is one way to illustrate combining a sale with price protection; it is not a model result or a target all farms should copy.

How do you compare a local soybean bid with futures?

The futures quote alone is not the amount the farm will receive. Clemson Extension’s comparison is: “Futures price + Basis – Freight = Net Sales Price.” Basis and freight, along with the buyer’s contract terms, determine how a futures reference translates into a local offer.

  1. Confirm the futures contract. Ask which futures contract month underlies the offer; do not assume the screen quote you are watching is the one used by the buyer.
  2. Get the basis and freight details. Confirm the basis applied to the offer and account for freight or other stated charges.
  3. Verify delivery and settlement. Ask the buyer when and where grain must be delivered, how quantity and quality are handled, and when and how settlement occurs.
  4. Compare contract types on the same basis. Review cash or spot, basis, forward, hedge-to-arrive, and deferred-pricing choices where offered. Compare the pricing decision, delivery obligation, fees, and expected net proceeds—not just the quoted futures component.

Clemson Extension’s April 25, 2025 guide includes historical bids and futures-contract examples; those figures should not be treated as current offers. Its useful point is the comparison method. Contract availability and exact terms vary by buyer and location.

Which market factors are worth monitoring?

Weather, USDA supply-and-demand data, managed-money positioning, and export demand—particularly buying from China—are factors market adviser Naomi Blohm identified in a September 3, 2026 article. They can help explain price movement, but they do not by themselves tell an individual farm when to sell. Any prices, positioning estimates, expected meeting dates, or export figures in that article describe the market at that time, not current conditions.

USDA Economic Research Service’s outlook, updated September 18, 2026, gives a national forecast for the U.S. 2026/27 marketing year. It reports a season-average soybean price forecast of $12.00 per bushel alongside projected production of 4.5 billion bushels and ending stocks of 310 million bushels. The same outlook lists yield at 52.8 bushels per acre, planted area of 86.9 million acres, harvested area of 85.9 million acres, exports of 1.69 billion bushels, and crush of 2.78 billion bushels. These are USDA forecasts for a defined marketing year—not current futures quotes, local bids, or guaranteed farm returns—and USDA can revise its estimates.

Outsidepride Soybean Seeds - 10 lbs High-Protein & High Yield Heirloom Variety Soy Beans, Ideal for Oil Processing, Forage, Animal Food Plots, & Wildlife Feed for Poultry & Other Farm Animals
  • HEIRLOOM VARIETY & HIGH YIELD: Outsidepride soy bean seeds is a robust heirloom strain known for its high yield, producing over 3 bushels per acre more than the popular Manokin variety, making it a valuable choice for maximizing harvest output. This variety is perfect for outdoor gardening enthusiasts looking to optimize their yard space.
  • RICH IN PROTEIN & OIL WITH VERSATILE USES: Containing about 18% oil and 38% protein, this soybean variety is perfect for producing high-quality soy bean oil and protein-rich meal. These soybeans can be processed into a wide range of products, including soy milk powder, soy flour, soy protein, tofu, and various industrial non-food products, showcasing its versatility. Ideal for making various soy-based meals such as edamame snacks.
  • OPTIMAL PLANTING GUIDELINES FOR MAXIMUM YIELD: For best results, plant soybean seeds at a depth of 0.75 to 1.5 inches, with row spacing between 7.5 and 15 inches, depending on soil type and tillage. This ensures uniform seed placement and optimal growth, adapting well to midwestern states and capturing a significant percentage of non-GMO acres.
  • HIGH-PROTEIN ANIMAL FEED: The high-protein fiber left after oil extraction is ideal for animal feed, particularly for poultry and swine industries, which consume over half of the processed soybean meal. This meal is also crucial for cattle, other farm animals, and pets, ensuring they receive the necessary nutrients for growth and development. A great addition to feed mixes for cowpeas and other legumes.
  • ECONOMIC AND NUTRITIONAL: As the most economically important bean globally, soybeans provide essential vegetable protein for millions and are key ingredients in hundreds of chemical products. A 60-pound bushel of our soybeans seed yields about 11 pounds of crude soybean oil and 47 pounds of soybean meal. Beneficial for producing shelf-stable goods for long-term use.

In a September 18, 2026 Brownfield interview, Terrain analyst Bree Baatz discussed soybean demand and geopolitical influences in the context of a rally. Her comments, like any price examples in that interview, describe the market at that time rather than a current quote or an individualized marketing recommendation.
