How Farmers Can Sell Corn and Still Capture Upside

Selling corn while retaining upside means separating the physical sale from futures exposure. Compare minimum-price contracts, calls, puts, HTAs, basis, costs, and delivery obligations before committing bushels.

Farmers can sell corn and retain some potential gains by choosing a contract that separates the physical sale from futures-price exposure. The main options are a minimum-price contract, a cash forward sale paired with a purchased call, or buying a put while arranging the physical sale separately. Each leaves different risks: none automatically fixes local basis, covers a short crop, or guarantees a profitable outcome.

Start by separating the prices and risks

A local cash bid reflects more than the futures market. It combines a futures-price component with local basis—the difference between the local cash price and the relevant futures price—along with the terms of the sale. Before choosing a strategy, decide which exposure you want to manage:

  • Futures price: Do you want to fix it, establish a floor, or remain exposed to changes?
  • Basis: Do you want to set the local cash relationship now or choose it later?
  • Physical delivery: What quantity, grade, location, and delivery period will the contract require?
  • Production risk: How much corn can you reasonably commit to selling?

An option on corn futures changes futures-price exposure; it does not by itself sell the physical crop or lock the local basis.

Compare the main approaches

Approach Futures-price exposure Basis and physical sale Cost and upside
Minimum-price contract A contract floor is paired with potential gains through a call option, under the provider’s formula. Terms vary. Confirm how cash price, basis, delivery, and settlement are handled. Fees or option costs can reduce the floor; gains depend on strike and contract terms.
Forward cash sale plus purchased call The cash sale fixes its price terms; the call can add gains above its strike, less premium and any basis mismatch. The physical contract sets delivery and pricing terms. Check how the call relates to the contract’s futures month and quantity. Premium is paid for the call. The cited sources do not establish one universal formula for this combination.
Put option plus separate physical sale A put can establish a futures-price floor while allowing gains if futures rise. The put does not itself sell corn or fix local basis. The premium is paid whether or not the put finishes valuable; the physical sale remains separate.
HTA contract Fixes the futures component for an agreed quantity and delivery period; later futures gains on that fixed component are not retained. Basis is set later, subject to contract terms. Provides basis-timing flexibility, not an open futures upside position.
Fixed-price forward cash sale Fixes the cash price for contracted bushels, so later price gains on those bushels are given up. Physical delivery and price terms are set in the contract. Offers price certainty rather than continued upside participation.

Options can preserve some upside, but their premium, basis treatment, expiration, and delivery obligations matter. UW Extension describes minimum-price tools as more costly than fixed-price tools while allowing participation in favorable movements; premiums vary with strike and time to expiration. How a minimum-price contract works

A minimum-price contract is typically offered through an elevator or merchandiser. The provider establishes a floor and buys a call option to give the producer possible gains if the market rises. The floor may be reduced by a fee or option cost, and the precise outcome depends on the written contract.

Illustrative example, not a current bid

University of Tennessee Extension gives an instructional example with a $5.20 cash forward price, a $4.95 stated minimum after a $0.25 fee, and a call with a $5.25 strike and $0.20 premium. If the specified December futures price is $5.75, the example payment is $5.45 per bushel: the $4.95 floor plus $0.50 above the $5.25 strike. Those figures describe that example, not a current offer or a universal calculation. University of Tennessee Extension: Grain Marketing Contracts Series

Before signing, establish who owns the option, how its value is exercised or settled, how the floor and fees are calculated, and whether basis and delivery are fixed. A stated floor alone does not tell you how every change in futures or basis will affect the final payment.

Pair a forward sale with a call option

A farmer can agree to a fixed cash sale and separately buy a call. The sale sets physical delivery and price terms; the call adds potential gains above its strike, minus the premium and any mismatch between the option and the sale’s basis or futures month. This can make the trade-off more explicit than a bundled contract, but it also means managing two agreements and matching their quantity and timing.

Confirm the call’s underlying futures month, strike, expiration, bushel quantity, and settlement rules, as well as whether its exposure corresponds to the bushels and pricing terms in the cash contract. A call can lose all of its premium if it expires without value.

Use a put to set a futures-price floor

The buyer of a put has the right, but not the obligation, to sell the underlying futures contract at the strike, subject to the option’s terms. If futures fall, the put may gain value and offset some decline; if futures rise, the option may expire without value while the crop can still benefit from higher cash prices. The premium is the cost of that protection.

A put does not establish the local cash price. Basis can strengthen or weaken independently, and the farmer still needs a plan to sell and deliver the corn. Option premiums vary with strike proximity and time remaining. USDA Economic Research Service: Farm Use of Futures, Options, and Marketing Contracts

Know what you give up with HTAs, collars, and storage

HTA contracts

An HTA (hedge-to-arrive) contract fixes the futures component for an agreed quantity and delivery period while leaving basis to be set later. It can let a farmer choose when to set basis, but once futures are fixed, later futures-price increases do not improve that fixed component. The eventual cash price still depends on basis and contract terms. University of Tennessee Extension: Grain Marketing Contracts Series

Options collars

A collar combines a purchased put with a sold call. The call premium may help offset the put’s cost, but selling the call limits or caps gains above its strike. Compare the cap with the protection and net cost rather than treating the collar as free insurance.

Storage with a hedge

Storing grain while hedging may leave the farmer positioned for basis improvement or carry, but it retains storage, quality, financing, and futures risks. The sources cited here do not quantify those costs for a particular farm, and storage is not a guaranteed way to capture additional value.

Size commitments to realistic production

A marketing contract cannot create bushels. If production falls short of the quantity committed for delivery, the farmer may face contract consequences or have to obtain grain elsewhere; the exact outcome depends on the agreement. Match contracted volume to realistic yield expectations and coordinate pricing decisions with crop-risk planning.

The University of Minnesota Center for Farm Financial Management’s 2026 corn pre-harvest marketing plan illustrates one approach using crop insurance and staged pricing. It is an example, not a universal prescription. University of Minnesota Center for Farm Financial Management: 2026 Corn Pre-Harvest Marketing Plan

Check contract mechanics before committing

Get the written agreement and resolve these points before signing. Local bids and basis differ, and no single provider or offer is established here.

  • Price protection: What is the minimum price after all fees? What strike and option formula determine potential gains, and are gains capped?
  • Option details: Who owns the option? What are its underlying month, expiration, exercise or settlement choices, and any roll rules?
  • Cash price and basis: Which futures component is used, when is basis set, and how is the final cash amount calculated?
  • Quantity and delivery: What bushel quantity, grade, delivery location, and delivery window apply? What happens if production is short?
  • Costs and obligations: Which premiums, fees, transaction costs, or other charges apply, and what conditions trigger delivery or other obligations?

CME corn futures specifications provide useful context if you are comparing a contract’s option or futures exposure. CME Group lists a contract size of 5,000 bushels, quotation in U.S. cents per bushel, and a 0.25-cent-per-bushel minimum tick worth $12.50 per contract; its page was updated September 30, 2026. These are exchange contract specifications, not a market forecast or a recommended hedge size. Check the live specification and contract month before use. CME Group: Corn Futures Contract Specs
