Onyx Odds combines social sports picks and sweepstakes currencies, while Onyx Predictions is a separate event-contract service. Here’s how the two differ.

Onyx Odds is not a conventional real-money sportsbook. Its sports-picks feature uses platform currencies in a social, sweepstakes-style format; eligible Sweeps Cash may be redeemable for cash or prizes under separate rules. Onyx Predictions is a different service for trading sports-event contracts through NinjaTrader, with financial risk. Which one you use changes how picks, funds, eligibility, and potential payouts work.

First, identify which Onyx product you mean

Onyx uses similar sports language for two distinct products. The social sports-picks feature lets users choose outcomes using platform currencies. Onyx’s Terms of Use say its website and service do not offer real-money gambling. Onyx Predictions, by contrast, offers sports-event contract trading through NinjaTrader. It requires a NinjaTrader account and involves financial risk.

Feature Social sports picks Onyx Predictions
What you do Submit picks on offered sports events and markets. Trade sports-event contracts.
Currency or funds Uses Onyx platform currencies. Sweeps Cash may qualify for redemption under the sweepstakes rules; Gold Coins cannot be redeemed. Requires a NinjaTrader account. Onyx says it does not hold funds for prediction-market trading; customer accounts are carried and maintained by NinjaTrader Clearing.
Rules Onyx’s sports rules, Terms of Use, and sweepstakes rules apply to their respective features. Separate event-contract terms and trading risks apply.
Key distinction Social picks and sweepstakes play, not conventional cash wagering according to Onyx’s Terms of Use. Financial trading that can result in losing the cost to enter a transaction.

Onyx identifies Onyx Predictions as an introducing broker. Do not treat its event contracts as another name for the social-picks feature: they have different account arrangements, rules, and risk.

How a social sports pick works

  1. Choose an event and market. Select from the events and markets offered in the product.
  2. Choose an outcome and stake. A straight pick is one selection, such as a moneyline, spread, total, or another listed option.
  3. Review the odds, market description, and rules. Most markets use American odds. Negative odds indicate how much to stake to win 100 Onyx Cash; positive odds indicate how much a 100 Onyx Cash stake would win. These are platform-currency examples, not a description of cash wagering. Onyx says odds, minimums, and maximums can change without notice.
  4. Submit the pick. Onyx’s General Sports Rules say a submitted pick cannot be canceled and that the odds at submission determine the payout. Cash-out may be offered for selected picks at a value set by Onyx, but it is not guaranteed and may be suspended.

The Pick Types Guide says a winning ticket returns the original stake plus profit. The exact market description and any sport-specific rules matter: they can override the general rules.

Pick formats and how they change exposure

Format How it works What to watch
Straight One selection, such as a moneyline, spread, or total. Check the market’s odds and settlement conditions.
Parlay Combines multiple selections into one pick. Every leg must win. A losing leg causes the parlay to lose.
Same-game parlay Combines outcomes from one matchup. Review the combination and its listed terms before submitting.
Futures A pick on an outcome decided later, such as a championship or award. The result may not be decided until much later than an individual game market.
Teaser Moves a spread or total in the user’s favor across eligible picks. Onyx’s guide says teasers are currently offered for NFL and NBA picks; check current availability.
Round robin Turns three or more picks into smaller parlay combinations. Each combination is staked separately, so total stake can exceed the per-combination amount entered.

How markets settle

Settlement is not identical across every sport or market. Onyx’s General Sports Rules say postponed, rescheduled, or venue-moved events are usually treated as no action unless sport-specific rules say otherwise. Affected selections may be removed from parlays and related picks recalculated. The rules also describe settlement using official statistics and give Onyx discretion when data is unavailable, disputed, or inconsistent, as well as in certain market-error cases.

Before submitting, read the market description and current sport-specific rules for the event in question. Do not assume that a postponement, venue change, or disputed statistic will be handled identically in every market.

Onyx currencies, sweepstakes, and redemption

Onyx’s Terms of Use describe virtual coins used to play games and say the service is not real-money gambling. The current Sweepstakes Rules distinguish between Gold Coins and Sweeps Cash:

  • Gold Coins may be purchased for freemium play and cannot be redeemed for prizes.
  • Sweeps Cash cannot be purchased. It may be used in sweepstakes games for a chance to accumulate eligible Sweeps Cash redeemable for cash or prizes, subject to the rules.

The rules describe a free mail-in entry method and Sweeps Cash bonuses tied to certain Gold Coin purchases. Onyx’s official rules state that no purchase is required to enter or win and a purchase does not increase the chance of winning. Read the current rules to understand entry methods, eligibility, and redemption conditions; a displayed balance is not automatically cash.

Redemption is not necessarily immediate. Onyx’s help article labels a request “Pending” while it is processing and “Approved” once funds have been sent. Eligible debit cards may be used, and bank or card issuer processing can take time. Onyx also says it may block or cancel a redemption if it risks creating a negative balance; no fixed payout timeline is established by that help article.

Where can you use Onyx?

Onyx’s location-help article, dated September 26, 2025, says the social platform is for people aged 18 or older in most U.S. states, verifies location, and is unavailable while a user is traveling in a restricted state. That article’s state list may not reflect current availability. Check the app or site for current, feature-specific access before participating.

Location access is not the only eligibility test. The official sweepstakes rules have separate legal-residency exclusions, so a location list alone does not establish eligibility for every feature. The applicable rules may also differ between social picks and Onyx Predictions.

Limits, safer-play controls, and rules to check

For social sports picks, Onyx says users can request purchase, wager, and loss limits, and that self-exclusion is available. Check the current controls and terms in the product before playing. The General Sports Rules effective October 5, 2026, the Sweepstakes Rules version 2.1.2 dated September 29, 2026, and the Terms of Use version 2.1.1 updated August 7, 2026 are the current operator materials referenced here; terms and availability can change.

  • Confirm whether you are using social picks or Onyx Predictions.
  • Check age, location, residency, and feature-specific eligibility.
  • Read market and sport-specific settlement terms before submitting.
  • For parlays and round robins, understand how each leg or separately staked combination affects total exposure.
  • Distinguish Gold Coins, Sweeps Cash, and any redemption eligibility.
