Marketing can benefit society by helping people discover and compare goods and services, supporting business activity and competition, and applying audience research to public goals such as health. Those benefits are not automatic: they depend on accurate information, fair practices and attention to who is reached and what is being promoted.
How marketing can help consumers
Marketing includes more than advertising. It also covers choices about what to offer, how to communicate it, where it is available and how people can obtain it. Done well, those activities can make options easier to find and evaluate.

Information for informed choice
Advertising can tell people that a product or service exists and explain attributes they may use to compare alternatives. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has described advertising as often providing useful information and helping firms compete, while warning that deceptive or fraudulent claims can mislead consumers and impair market performance. That perspective comes from a 1997 FTC speech, not a current market study: The Role of Advertising and Advertising Regulation in the Free Market.
The benefit therefore depends on the quality of the message. A claim that is accurate, relevant and understandable can help a person make a choice; a misleading claim can distort it.

Availability and convenience
OpenStax’s Principles of Marketing describes three ways marketing and distribution can make offerings easier to obtain: “time utility” (available when convenient), “place utility” (physically available and accessible), and “possession utility” (easier to acquire). These are explanatory concepts, not measured estimates of marketing’s social impact. The textbook’s overview is available at Principles of Marketing.
How marketing can support economic activity
Marketing may help a business reach customers and generate sales and revenue. In the pathway described by OpenStax, revenue can give businesses room to expand, hire employees and buy from suppliers or partners. Business activity can also contribute to tax revenue.

- Marketing 14th edition By Roger Kerin and Steven Hartley
This is a plausible economic mechanism, not proof that marketing alone causes a particular amount of growth or that every campaign creates net jobs. Higher sales are not, by themselves, evidence of greater social welfare: what is sold, how it is produced and who benefits all matter.
How marketing can contribute to competition
When firms communicate meaningful product attributes, consumers can compare options and businesses can compete for their attention. Making an offering visible may also help a new or less familiar provider reach potential customers. Competition can give firms an incentive to respond to consumer needs, but the FTC’s account does not establish that advertising always lowers prices, improves products or produces innovation. Those outcomes depend on market conditions and the information available to consumers.

How social marketing serves public goals
Social marketing applies marketing concepts to behavior goals intended to benefit individuals and communities, rather than primarily to sell a commercial offering. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) defines it as “an approach that seeks to integrate marketing concepts with other approaches to influence behaviours that benefit individuals and communities for social good.” Its 2014 Social marketing guide for public health programme managers and practitioners is a practical resource for public-health work.
Public-health organizations can use audience research and communication to encourage protective behaviors. The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) discusses social marketing as an approach for health interventions in its social marketing resources. UNICEF’s social and behavior change guidance emphasizes research, audience and partner insight, ethical principles and sustained outcomes: Social and Behaviour Change Guidance.

Awareness is not the same as behavior change, and an intended public benefit is not proof that a campaign achieved it. Evaluation matters when judging results.

Marketing can also promote products or practices with harmful effects. The World Health Organization (WHO) says commercial activity can shape health positively or negatively. Its Commercial determinants of health fact sheet describes risks associated with targeted marketing of tobacco, alcohol, ultra-processed foods, sugary drinks and breast-milk substitutes. WHO also identifies heightened risks for young people and the possibility that commercial effects can deepen existing economic and social inequities.

That makes the social value of a marketing effort depend on four questions:
- What is being promoted? A useful service and a harmful product do not have the same likely consequences.
- How truthful and complete are the claims? People need reliable information to assess an offer.
- Who is being targeted or left out? Reach can help meet needs, but targeting vulnerable groups can increase harm.
- What outcome is demonstrated? Sales, awareness and intended behavior are not interchangeable with a documented social benefit.
What to conclude about marketing’s social benefit
Marketing can improve access to information and offerings, help sustain business activity, support competition and serve public-health or community objectives. None of those benefits is guaranteed, and the available sources do not establish a single figure for marketing’s overall net benefit to society. A fair assessment weighs the usefulness and accuracy of the communication, the product or behavior involved, the audience affected and the outcomes actually shown.
